So we need a new laptop. I want a Mac, but I’m too cheap to get one.
What do I need it to do? Nothing extreme. Mainly browsing.
    Are we gamers? No.
    Upload some photos? Yes.

I don’t want to purchase something nice and be back two years later for an upgrade. I want something that is going to last.

    Suggestions?

My .02, if you want a Mac, shell out the money for it. You wouldn’t have to buy another laptop for a long time. I’ve had mine since 2011 and it’s still kicking as if it were brand new.

The only windows machines that I use are the ones that the govt forces me to for 40 hours a week.

My old laptop died last week so I just bought new one from Bestbuy last Monday. I went for a Dell because I had a Dell at my previous job and they were pretty reliable. I was there for 15 years and I went thru 3-4 different computers. We use HP at my current job and I'm on my 2nd laptop in 10 months and I'm still experiencing weird problems.

Windows 10 is really slow and took a long time to do all the updates and so many reboots. I just left it on over night. :) I didn't like McAfee because I think it's slowwww so I bought Norton.

I work for a software company and we are a Mac shop. All development (for Mac, Windows, and Linux) is done on a Mac. Macs are more costly but they are reliable and well built. We have Macs in use that are 5+ years old and they are still solid.

The PC laptops that we have had do not tend to hold up as well (not that big an issue since they are cheaper to replace).

Viruses for Macs are also less common. Still a risk but not as bad as with Windows.

For any laptop I always recommend the warranty (AppleCare for Macs). The laptops are carried around and there is always more chance of things coming loose than with a computer sitting on your desk.

One way to save a few $$ is with the refurbished computers from Apple.com. If you buy from Apple they have the same warranty as new and you can still buy Apple Care.

All Mac laptop computers are flash-drive based. MacBook is pretty sweet (also a lot cheaper than MacBook Pro). Wife has one and she loves it.

Shark is right get a warranty.

Sean you like Best Buy, I have bought all of my Macs from them and their warranty is close in price to apple care but they include water damage and accidental dropping.

Lots of good options out there and everyone is going to have a personal opinion. If you go Windows, get at least an i5 CPU and at least 8 GB memory. Our office is equipped with Surface Pros and Sirface laptops and they have performed well.

I’ll threw my .02 in the ring.

I work and support 3,800 Windows computers at my job. Switched to MACs at home and threw away thousands of dollars of windows machines and couldn’t have been happier . I had high end built windows machines / liquid cooled etc I had built.

The architectural difference between a Windows Machine and a MAC is undeniable .
    A Mac just works.

Put it to sleep, wake it up and keep on working. You spend a little more at the beginning but you get a far superior computer that will last longer with a lot less headaches.

People look at bottom line price and see windows machines as cheaper. When you look at overall cost and that a lot of what you need is already built into the Mac . A lot of the software for the Mac is also free or a lot cheaper than Window$.

It’s the age old “ you get what you paid for”.

Apple has an educational program so if you have family members in college or who work for a school you might be able to take advantage of this.

The 8 gb memory should be fine but you may want to consider the 256 gb storage. You can't upgrade the internal storage and with only 128 gb for OS, apps and data, this could get filled up.

Whatever you get, you should also make sure that you back up your data. Either to the cloud or to an external hard drive.

If you're just browsing, get whatever fits in your price range that comes with a solid state drive. It'll have that "snappy" performance you'd want these days.

If you mainly use an android cell phone, you might want to look at a chromebook. It's basically a giant cell phone and they are cheap.

    So. Much. This.

If you put a solid state HD in a dell, it would cost more than a Mac

5 years and going strong on our MacBook Pro. I will never go back.

Depends on the unit. However a SSD in a computer used solely for browsing is an overkill. As an ole mentor used to tell me, use the right tool for each job. There is no one tool fits all scenario.

We use Dell XPS' at work. Outstanding laptops. Work horses. Use them in the lab and onsite. No issues at all. I like Dell. I have a Dell All in One 23" touch screen i7 personal desk top. Love it.

I would argue that. Having something work as advertised for years, is a requirement for me. Nothing pisses me off more than turning on my Laptop and get the blue screen of death.

Kinda the same line of thinking when buying a Tundra.

Ssd is a must as long as you aren't doing a ton of media storage.

Dedicated graphics card is overkill for internet and email

Most, if not all calibration procedures, instructions, protocols that we utilize from most test equipment manufacturers are always Windows based. We would be dead in the water with Apple..I think Apples are fine for home use.

You are correct. The business world is still dominated by Windows because of the wide variety of software and hardware interface options

hold on there, you payed good money for a reliable Tundra right! well time to shell out cash for a good lap top...3K is not that much plus you can customize it :D:D:eek::spending:https://www.falcon-nw.com/laptops/overview

all kidding aside I am still using a Vostro1500 from 2007 with Bodhi Linux as my OS, my current gaming/all rig hangs on my wall next to my TVIf you are not real PC savvy then MAC will be more stable and less troublesome but you of course will pay more, what is your price point?

My friend Mike just bought 2 top end XPS laptops for their business. Mike writes calibration code and his wife is the editor of Cal Lab Magazine. Mikes' has 64 Gig ram, a ludicrous amount of storage space. He was running three different OS's at the same time to show it off. A bit pricey though..
