the perfect tundra RTT setup to top all setups

I've begun my small, yet extreamly researched overland build and I posted in one thread and due to the volume of requests for more info here we go

Im a research nut, I've been looking for the perfect rtt for years that makes complete sense size wise and had a very hard time. I've heard bad things about tempui, my friends leaked the very first night. Cvt is cvt, your paying for a name. Soo I went out on a limb here and decided to stray away from the conventional RTT style. In order to run a nice rtt you need a rack pack, and Christ those are close to a grand after shipping and possibly powder coating. Then I always have this thing on my truck hindering my bed use.

I was turned on to a company called front runner when I had my 4runner and wondered hey maybe they make a product for my application.. BAM, simple load bars. Whala! Yakima makes a set that are height adjusting but I don't really need that and they are 700$. THESE were 300$ to my door, use your FACTORY Toyota bedrail system and are rated for the weight of that system, 600lbs. I was pumped they bolted in beautifully and look great, sit nice and are low. Low enough where I can make guards /mesh cages to bolt from my factory rail, to the tent rail.. load my bed up with stuff and not have to worry about shit being stolen on our honeymoon ( stay tuned for that ).


Saving money with those allowed me to buy the exact tent I wanted, yes the platform of it is big but with good reason and I will list why I went with this tent so you understand. goFSR M60!

1. This tent does not fold in half. You can load this with bedding and literally suitcases. The durable cover have tons of extra give so you can do that. If it folded in have like other tents, you would be very limited to that.

2. Really nice memory foam mattress. Because this doesn't fold in half, you don't have to worry. And Christ if you wanted to you could put your actual bed in it hah. It's a queen size bed!

3. You will never get wet, ever. This thing has a 2000m poly coating on the body AND the rain fly. The zippers are burly and glide great! It's not a cheap zipper like other brands

4. Your not really confined to a tent. It's very tall, open and large. If I camped on a beach or mountain I have a full panoramic view of everything. I'm not hunkered down. Yes it's tall, I don't know how it will do in a friggin sunami.

5. It's very thin folded down. Also you, alone.. one person can set this tent up in under 5 minutes. If not less.

6. The belly of the tent has a rail system. You can build off this like you could any rail system. I think it's incredible. This tent is the EXACT length of my 6.5 bed. So you cant steal anything if I lock the tail gate. This tent was $2094 freight shipped to FedEx, honestly for it's size and build I could t go wrong. It also comes with a really really nice ladder

Next I shall share photos of my system I have now and how the tent opens and does it's magic. I'll try to show from beginning to end of how it opens.! I hope this helps some people and gives you a good idea!!

The bed you sleep on is 6ft inside of it. When I ordered it the person I spoke with asked if I had a double cab or a crew max I said I have a double cab. She said they run a smidge long on a crew max. My friend has a crew max I could bolt it up for you guys one of these weekends so you can see if you would like

Very nice! I’m headed down the same path, and considered those bars. Couldn’t use those, the bed rails are rated at 220 lb each(probably a static load), 440 lb was not enough for my setup. Mine attach to the bed rail, but also go over the top of the bed, 800 lb rating.

Was in a time crunch, so I purchased this. Cutting it down to 10” in height above the bed rail, should have it installed mid week.

 

now to test going full speed ala SGU....needs to be SGU certified..lol

I thought the same thing about the Front Runner bed bars for my use. They are nice but I don’t like that the bedrail holds all the weight. I think the weight should be on the bedsides and the bedrail should just hold the rack/bars in place.

Nice setup. I always thought the free spirit tents looked better made than other soft shell tents.

I jumped on a hardshell rtt group buy for $1500. I have a cap so I just had to order some 8020 profiles for crossbars and bolt it up. It was about $200 in material.

Tested the tent for the first time this weekend. Worked fantastic! Have a few little tweaks to do (like upgrade the pad that sits on top on the memory foam mattress) but survived 30mph winds and rain. Pretty happy

 

Also truck got north of 17mpg on the trip

I want this. How many can sleep comfortably in that tent?

NVM, 3 adults and 2 kids or 4 adults.

Any pic of the whole truck with the tent folded down?

 

Keep an eye out for bedside cracking with the front runner bars. They dont really distribute load over a large area.

I'm thinking of contacting them directly and seeing if I could buy one Soo I had 3 bars on it and I was going to look into bed stiffeners of some sort

You know I wished they’d invent a rack that can somehow let you have a tonneau cover and a roof top tent. I would like to secure my stuff in the bed and lock it, yea I know toppers and canopies are available but I don’t want those. I think some RTT racks don’t put into account bed flex.
