I wanted to share details and initial impressions on the Southern Style Slimline winch bumper I was able to install last weekend. This isn’t meant to be a step by step installation thread as there are clear instructions provided from SSO and @mgm16trdpro already has a lot of great tips and details in his thread on this same bumper.

I’ll start by clarifying what I was going for with this bumper. I wanted a clean, hidden winch installation that looked close to factory. Everyone has their own preferences but I personally like a subtle and clean design over many of the bulkier alternatives. I also didn’t want to add a ton of weight and this only adds 35 lbs once you account for removal of the aluminum crash bar it replaces (winch adds additional weight of course). My main priority was adding a winch, the lightbar is a nice added bonus and I like that it is designed to fit extremely well and isn’t easily accessible to remove if someone is looking for a freebie.

As far as options, you can go with or without a winch opening, with or without a bull bar/stinger, and with or without solenoid/clutch access holes. I did no bull bar, typically not a fan of them and if I change my mind I figured it’s easier to weld one on later if I decide I want it vs remove one cleanly that’s already there.

I did go with winch access holes for the clutch and solenoid for two reasons.
    1. I wasn’t in the mood to pay for a Xeon Platinum with the wireless clutch. With it, you don’t need to access a clutch and can choose to have a closed front on the bumper except for the fairlead opening.
    2. Even if I did spring for the Xeon, I would have opted for the access holes as I don’t fully trust that a wireless clutch would always function long term and I’d rather have the access.
As far as lighting, mine came with a 30” Heise light bar with lifetime warranty. Can always change this out with something else later and it was included at the time of my order based on a special SSO was running at the time. Will post some light output pics further down, I’m pretty impressed with it.

Alright, onto the install and a few tips.

First, check your box when it arrives. Shipping large heavy pieces of steel is tough and they can shift around and get damaged. Mine arrived with some minor scratches on a shackle mount and a bend on a bracket just like @mgm16trdpro. I was able to straighten it out easily with a rubber mallet and touch up the other portion with some paint SSO was kind enough to ship out quickly. They were great to work with and clearly packaged it well on their end, just check your stuff upon arrival to make sure you are happy with everything.

First impression out of the box is that its extremely well designed and built. Sturdy, nice welds, curves and shapes perfectly fit out trucks, and it looks like it belonged there all along when done.

If you have a light bar and winch going in, I recommend taking the time to install those on the bumper before you get started on the truck itself. That way when you get to the actual install point on your truck you are just lifting it all into place and don’t have to pause to do get the winch, light, and fairlead in.

Note on the solenoid, you will most likely have to relocate it or place it to the side of the winch. In this pic below I tried having it mounted on the top left of the winch and it did not have enough clearance to install it that way. I have mine sitting to the left of the winch down low now so that I can still access it if I ever need to use my remote wired vs wireless.

    Winch and solenoid.jpg

The actual installation is really straightforward. Especially if you’ve already messed with anything in those areas and are familiar with removing your grill, fog light liners, etc.

I used a dremel to cut out the plastic portion in the center of the grill. Watch for debris flying off the cutting wheel, expect searing bits of plastic to come your way.

Once you’ve done that you are left with this look below. The SSO bumper is essentially replacing the aluminum crash bar you see in the center there and it comes with brackets to remount the OEM bumper ends on to the SSO bumper.

    Tundra crash bar face.jpg

One other note, I had shimmed my bumper forward with the Coachbuilder bumper shims for tire clearance. This new bumper mounts on that same location and between the thickness of the plate of the SSO bumper and the bracket for the bumper end, there would not have been much thread left to keep the CB bumper shims in place. I ended up removing them and still have close to the same clearance since you have some adjustability in the SSO brackets and I think the entire assembly is slightly more forward than it was stock. Long story short, I’ll be looking for a home for my CB bumper shims.

For the lightbar wiring, SSO can include a premium harness with a switch that fits the Toyota blank spots. I got that and it works perfectly. Taped my wiring to a coat hanger to get through the firewall but other than that part it was super simple to wire and all works perfectly.

As for the output on the 30” Heise, it’s pretty impressive. Spot/Flood combo with good throw on the spot portion. Below are some comparisons.

Here is just my low beams:
    low beam.jpg

    Just my High Beams:
    hi beam.jpg

    Just the 30" Heise:
    lightbar only.jpg

That’s about it. Hope this helps anyone interested in these or wanting to learn more about them. I love it, looks great and added a ton of utility to my Tundra.

    Looks really good!
If this had been available sooner I might have gone this route instead of the SDHQ.
Although, being able to pick it up myself at the shop saved me a bunch on shipping.
I wish I had those shackle attachment points.

If I had the need for a winch and the money for a winch setup, this would be it. It looks great!

    Awesome thread.

Congrats, looks great, and awesome review. Hope u get to enjoy it as much as I have. Still loving mine and no issues to date. How was your fit around the edges? Did it fit perfectly symmetrical on both sides. I noticed on mine it has an ever ever ever so slightly difference in space on the left and right ends. This could be a result of many factors including my cut, the factory bumper, the sso bumper, ect. I must admit I'm very anal, 99% of people wouldn't notice.

My left side fits flush, my right has that very small gap between sso and black factory cutout. Just wondering bc I tightened down the bumper as much as possible.

    Again, looks great and congrats.

I really like this setup. I’ve been eyeballing it since SSO first posted it on here some time ago. And because they’re local to my mom’s place, it gets damn tempting to order one and bring the truck to their shop when I’m in La visiting.

    Nice job on the install

Thanks, really like it so far. Good call out on the edge, I forgot to mention it. The passenger side sits just slightly more forward than the driver side, could be my oem bumper is slightly off kilter which could have come from me creating clearance for tires earlier. I’m able to line it up to where it looks even but the plastic on that side wants to sit just behind the sso bumper naturally which would show a gap. Will try to get a pic later. I think I’ve trained it to stay put where it is now and it works fine.

Wow I have to say that looks wicked! I really like that. All the benefits of a bumper winch, tow hooks, lift holes and aux lighting without the bulk! Really cool.

Actually I didn't notice on yours. It's not noticeable from pics. I was just wondering if yours happened to line up perfect or if it was like mine. The way u explain it sounds exactly the same as mine. Nothing anyone would notice, I just do bc I'm very anal bout shit. On mine it looks like if I put an extra washer on my factory bumper to push out the driver side it would line them up perfect. Again, nothing major and I haven't felt the need to actually attempt it yet. I was just wondering if yours lined up the same or different. Bc all the different factors it's hard to put a finger on exactly what could use the slight adjustment.

If u happen to ever spend the time to figure it out and are able to tweak something keep me posted and I'll do the same. Mine is so minimal I don't think I'll ever mess with it unless I got to get in there for some reason. U really got to look for it or if I told someone to notice is the only time anyone would notice so for now it's so minimal even my add can live with it.

I don't want to jinx it but I'm actually very surprised that the powder coat is holding up so well on mine. I thought by now with all the salt I would start to see some small sign of rust but nothing so far. Matter of fact I love mine so much, that there's no way the alignment of a washer worth or less could even trigger my add enough to bother me.

20171208_164428.jpg See what i mean, u cant even tell on a real closeup pic, u can only notice in person and would have to be told to look for it. I mean it's literally probably a washer worth of tweaking to align absolutely perfectly.

Looks awesome. Really dig the amber lights on the S8.
And no, can’t tell at all. Mine is good to go also with how I have it now. Glad to hear the powder coating is durable also.

This or the SDHQ hidden winch mount are very high on my list of wants. Really like the light bar option on the SSO and expect I'll go with them because of that. Yours looks great, Cemented! The factory front tow points have to be removed? Does the SSO bumper interface well with the Pro skidplate?

Thanks! It does work perfectly with the Pro skidplate, was designed for use with it but can be used without one also. It bolts to where the factory tow points sit so I removed mine but I remember reading someone may have kept them on

Just fyi, I kept my factory tow hooks. U remove to install bumper but can put back on when bumper is on. Zero modification needed.

So if you had to take off your grill do you have to remove with winch mount?

Im undecided on the light bar. for offroad use it doesnt light up enough to the left and right as I hoped. I may skip the light bar.

No I can take off grill without messing with bumper. I added my Baja squadron sports in amber wide corner after the sso bumper and s8 lightbar in clear driving combo. For off-road use that combo is sick. Between the s8 and squadron fogs there's more than enough light for on or off road. I def don't feel the need for anymore additional upfront lighting with that combo.

Looked pretty damn good in person Manuel! Can’t wait til you go out on the dirt with us. I hold back on a lot of stuff because no one wants to keep pulling me out. But with your winch, Ill be able to do all the stupid stuff I want to try. No more @dcsleeper408 saying “that’s the last time I’m pulling you out.” :D How much you want for the coach shims?

I have the same setup on my 4Runner, with the squadrons as well. Late one night I needed to drive home from Wishon, at a relatively higher rate of speed. If it wasn’t for the 30” lightbar, I would’ve surely had to slow down. The light it gave lit amazingly far and really helped. It’s there if you need it, which when you do, you will be grateful. DO THE LIGHT!

46” light bar. Kept getting harassed by cops due to no light covers. The 2 amber outside covers are legal as a Work light. The inside covers are full covers.

Ours are Tomar light bars. Their stuff is insane. Explosion proof (they also make the emergency lights for oil rigs which have to survive explosions), bright and functional.

The bumper bar is a 35” with all spots in it. Good for a quarter lux at a half mile. Their bars are modular so every 5” section is it’s own lamp assembly and can be changed if you don’t like it for $40 and about five minutes. Different colors and light patterns.

The roof bar is a 50” combo. That means you can change it from amber to white with a switch in the cab. Or I can make part of the bar white and part amber at the same time. All switchable and dimmable from the cab.

It’s hard to see the bumper bar because I recessed it a little to allow air to still flow through the opening.

That SSO bumper is currently at the top of our bumper list. It’s taken us three years to decide on a bumper because we haven’t found one we like. The Tundra is my wife’s daily driver and she chooses what she wants. The tube prerunner bumpers are light, but look unrefined. Most plate bumpers that look nice weigh nine thousand pounds. This SSO is right on the money so far.
