    Friends,

I'm looking at purchasing a 2016 Tundra but it has major dents in the rear end (dealer is repairing). Any thoughts on issues I might encounter later? It fits both my budget and specifications (low mileage, double cab, 4x4, 38 gallon tank):

Thanks for any advice. Of note, I'd look for a price of about $26-27k.

Here's the damage (according to the sales slug it's on both sides):

With only one pic of dent kind of hard to say. My guess is that the rear bumper was replaced after backing into something or being rear ended.

I would have rear frame inspected. Also would want some kind of body work warranty. If frame good, and quality body work should be fine.

Looks like the vehicle got rear ended or backed into something.

I'd walk away—it's just not worth it. There will be plenty of other trucks that come along.

Thanks Trooper, James & Buck. The only thing that has me considering it is the lack of trucks (double cab, 4x4, 38 gallon tank) in the 30k range.

You should be able to find something in that price range without that kind of damage, I'd think. That would be enough for me to not even consider it. There's a one-owner 2012 Rock Warrior double cab (just no 38 gallon tank) for sale up here in OR with only 39k miles on it that they're asking $28k for.

Dealers will tell you "it's nothing", but they have no clue. I went to look at a used truck a couple years back and asked the dealer if it had been in any accidents. They said "we don't sell cars that have been in accidents", but upon closer inspection it was easily apparent that it had been wrecked. My point is they'll try to minimize any apparent issue and then claim ignorance if it turns out to be serious.

Anyway, I'd keep looking. I spent 3 months looking for my last used truck, but that's just me! Good luck with your decision!

I find it strange that the dealer would put it for sale before the damage is fixed. you usually see all the used vehicles all ready cleaned and fixed before they go to the public.

Also i know there is different reporting and such throughout north america but it seems strange they still list a "Clean Carfax".

Frame would be one concern and how the repair was done would be other. If bed is replaced and no frame damage then I think it is fine. Only problem I have is it is a Graphite TSS. First truck dealer showed me was a Graphite but I wanted black. Then the sales lady said "I don't know if rebate covers black". I was thinking this lady does nit know shit. I tried to work a deal with that dealer. Game warden told me to call them. He got a great deal on a Tacoma Pro. They would not make me same deal on a Tundra so I said kiss my butt.

Clean carfax is because the damage wasn't reported either to police or insurance or by a body shop. It is listed as toyota certified pre-owned which means those dents should be fixed prior to certification and there should be no structural damage. If you can get them lower on the asking price, repair the damage BEFORE the sale (ask how they will repair it), and get them to toss in something to warranty the body work, then I, personally wouldn't be concerned. Depending on level of repair, it may hurt your resale value later if that repair shows up on the carfax down the road. Typically bad carfax takes a 20% hit. But its amazing how many dents can be removed paintless. If there is no creasing, they might be able to pop them out. Prevoius owner or someone that works at the dealership may have backed in to something. It happens. We had a lot driver do 4K damage to a car moving it which required 2 panels on passenger side to be repainted and one replaced. We also had a driver hit a parked car and sent it over a 5 foot retaining wall. Damages had to be disclosed, and we didn't resale the cliff diving car. Good luck.

Thanks for all the feedback. I think I'm going to pass on this one since several similar options have come up for sale.
