    Hi all -
While there are lots of topics of all sorts, I couldn't find a topic on "Can I buy a salvage truck and build it and yet be ok with it". This topic is an inspiration from lots of YouTubers who have bought cars from salvage auto auction and made out well.

I'll start by posting a salvage listing here as an example https://www.copart.com/lot/27160458

Questions that run through my mind are :

    • Is worth it?
    • Would there be a safety issue?
    • If you're a DIYer, would you take a risk at it? Do as much as you can and then get the painting done by a professional?
    • what would be the insurance like for a "salvage title"
I"d like to take this route only save money and I"I'll keep it as long as I can. i dont care about resale value as I would never sell it.

    So let me hear it

If you don't plan on a fix and flip and keep it till it falls apart, I don't see way not. Have to get it cheap though.

As far as insurance, I don't really know. I drove a salvage title Xb for almost 4 years but I only carried liability. Cheap and didn't care. I would call your insurance and see what they say about it. They may say no dice on full coverage.

The one in your example looks doesn't look too bad but I'm guessing it has some pretty serious frame damage to come out as a total loss.

Bottom line: if you can do the work yourself, roll the dice. You could very well come out ahead in the long run.

Get it inspected for frame damage before buying.

I've owned a few salvage titles and they have potential mostly of the VW and Wrx variety. But you usually have to Shell out before you have a return. With a frame there are things to be weary of because if it's twisted it may never drive right. If it's cracked you can use support plates to add rigidity to the welded frame.

Really know what you're getting into before you buy.

Also know that it WILL take longer to sell... That's a fact.

Also. Insurance is hit and miss. But many will only do liability. And own on buying outright because banks will typically not loan on damaged vehicles.

Insurance will not be any different, called My State Farm when considering the same type thing. They do not ask. It will have a "Diminished" value for resale or if it gets wrecked/totaled, again. The insurance will pay a lower value if totaled, again.

There are a lot of Salvaged titled cars out there and for sale.

Not knowing what you can get it for, I would try to have a good idea of what will be needed in terms of cost for the repairs to factor in a max bid, guessing you already know that.

Had a neighbor who made some decent $$ buying salvage autos at auctions. Saw him go through the process on several cars and trucks. He kept a nice SC'd Frontier for himself. There is a process you have to go through here in CO. Not a big deal actually . The CO troopers do the final safety inspection. If the vehicle passes you get a recovered from salvage title and insurance is no problemo....

I'd like to see a pic of under that truck for sure before I bought it. That pic looks like it would be a simple fix but I guarantee you, underneath that truck is a freaking nightmare. Like stated, do your homework so you know what you're getting into. Other than that people do this all the time so it can be done. Good luck!

I like the one you posted. I would seriously consider it. But I'd make it into an off road/ street toy. Fiberglass bed sides aren't that expensive.

These are the before and after pictures of what I build. I got it with 24k miles and I built from there. I m not looking to resell so value it’s not an issue. If u have a vehicle w rebuilt title, the value doesn’t get affected as much if u were to sell it after 4-5 years.

U can get the parts easily from junkyard. Labor is the most expensive part. In my case, I was looking for Tundra where I can change the whole front to look meaner like Raptor so I found one.

I don’t see why you wouldn’t try it out. What’s the difference between that and rebuilding an old classic? If your good with the tools and like hangin I’m the shop I say do it. I’ve saved lots of things. We saved two thirds cost on a salvaged 5th wheel cause a tree fell on it. Fixed it up and looks same as any other one out there now for fraction of the cost.
My wife’s Sienna is also a refinished right-off that hit a moose. I didn’t do the work but we still saved the money buying it from the feller that did. Was almost half the price of the same van and works/looks perfectly fine. Didn’t have any issue insuring it either (Canada).
Save some of your hard earned money and try it out!

Doesn’t look like the frame is damaged in the back. U can get a complete bed from junkyard and replace. U just have to look for the deals. I strongly suggest buying a rear ended vehicle instead of something that was hit in the front.

I buy from co part and IAAI all the time. when vehicle is almost new (like yours) owners push to get their vehicle replaced w a decent insurance company especially State Farm. Will u be inspecting vehicle before u bid on it or just buying online.

Lay down and look at the frame to see if it’s damaged or not. Toyota sells pieces of frame that u can easily bolt together.

U can search for parts for Any car here.
Has listing from all the Junkyard’s in US and Canada.
Before careful when u call places in French Canada. They hang up at some places as soon as they hear English.

If I ever decided on building another full body TJ again (after I ate a big bowl of dumb ass for breakfast), it would be a salvage title Jeep. Even cheaper.

I never knew @Coolhardy black beauty was a salvage title. Looks great and probably drives just fine. I guess it depends on the extent of damage.

This times 1000000 buying a rear ended loss is far better than a front or side impact damaged loss.

Every car I've rebuilt had been from rear end damage.

Except for one... She cost me 3 times more than any build I had done

Lol @ColoradoTJ I always wanted a Raptor but it’s a high maintenance blonde beauty so chose to go with TRD PRO. TRD PRO holds its value very well so it was off limits. Then I start sniffing around this forum and chose to build my own version of TRD PRO Raptor beater.

I just bought 4:88 gears, LSD and supercharger sitting in my garage itching to get installed.

    Strongly agree...
All the re builders look for rear end damage except this theory doesn’t work w Tesla (not all the time at least)

That one on NJ with the rear damage is something I can relate to.

My truck is perfect from the front of the bed onwards but was just totaled. It was a 2017 with 4000 miles on it.

Biggest cost is the frame pieces. The frame raises themselves were over $7k and I think something like 60 hours of labor. To repair everything was going to be close to $30k so rear end accidents can be very costly to repair.

Just do your diligence as the appraiser whose job or is to look at these things thought is was like $7k to fix until it got on a lift.

Sometime insurance companies offer u to buy the truck (if and when the owner is interested) before they send it to salvage auctions. Did they ever offer u anything.

I could have easily gotten it fixed if the selling price is right. Labor is always an issue but not when u have connections.

They didn’t and I wanted nothing to do with it. They gave me a really good offer on a settlement which helped me get Into a Platinum over the Limited I had. I miss Betty but I didn’t want the burden or the worry.
