EC 119 (Dos Cabezas Road), EC 158, and West Mortero Wash

    This portion of the forum is still dreadfully empty. Today I'm filling the void with some trails in the Anza-Borrego Desert: EC 119 (also known as Dos Cabezas Road), EC 158, and West Mortero Wash. I-8 or CA-78 can be used to reach S-2 which is the nearest paved road. The junction between I-8 and S-2 is about four miles to the southeast of where this trail begins. The San Diego and Arizona Eastern Railway runs along this trail and there’s even an abandoned rail station along the route. EC 158 branches off of EC 119 and heads back east to S-2. The views of the desert, mountains, and gorges are simply stunning. Be wary of illegal immigrants and smugglers; do not hike along the tracks. Enjoy!

    Note: West Mortero Wash and EC 158 can be difficult for full-size trucks.

    You can afford to retire someday???? Fortunately there are still places out here in the west where you can get totally lost on purpose (and free parking to boot....)

    That, and don't go too far from your vehicle if you go walking/hiking. There's also a prison a few miles west of El Centro.

    The skies are so clear and the stars so beautiful. There are numerous camping spots out there.

    Yeah, there's Centinela State Prison (medium security) and Calipatria State Prison (maximum) north of Brawley if I remember correctly.

    Also, stay away from the New River, east of Anza Borrego if I remember correctly. It's polluted, and smugglers used to float contraband along it back then.

    And careful in the summer time when temps don't go below 100* and often hover north of 110*. Bring lots of water.

    Otherwise, beautiful desert scenery around there.
