So I'm finding out just how soft Toyota paint is. I haven't had time to do a full wash and detail on mine due to weather and time. I did a two bucket quick wash on it sunday. Had some spots I had to clay because it had gel coat from some careless person at my job (I work at a boat plant). And did a clay test on the hood. I had to use clay magic red on the gel coat spots and it marred bad. Used Meg's white clay on the hood test and it seemed like not quite enough. Is there an in between clay that's not as aggressive as the red but more aggressive than the meguiars that I can find?

Watching this thread as well. Also, would like to understand paint softness. I would think the clear coat on top would make paint soft/hard moot. Thoughts?

Debadged this past weekend...drivers side came off with no issue as "normal". Passenger side was a different ball game altogether. Looks like they used 3M vhb tape on the passenger side that was beyond cheap because it just tore apart and didn't "roll off" as normal like every other time i've taken emblems or any double sided tape off. Once I got past that I went to take the TUNDRA letters off near the bottom. I get the letters off and notice a few gouges the letters covered up...ok I can deal with that. Started working the tape with my fingers, rolling and finger nail scooting as I call it (use the nail instead of a plastic scraper for stubborn spots). Never is 30 years have I ever damaged paint using a finger nail, regardless of the paint type other than latex lol. The clear coat on that door peals like latex with a finger nail. Especially so down at the bottom and around where the emblem was mounted. My suspicion after seeing the marring when I removed the emblem is they knew and just said fuck it and covered it up and sent it down the road. So now I have to make time to get to the dealership 30 miles away for bad paint on the door.

I did about 3 passes with the claymagic red and didn't use any more pressure than i normally would. The gel coat did come off. I'm using nanoskin glide as my clay lube, diluted about 10:1 with distilled water. I made sure to use plenty. That was a spot fix only. If the weather is half decent this weekend I'm going to do a full polish. I have PB SSR 3, 2.5, 1; Megs ultimate compound and 101. I plan on starting with the 2.5 on a white pad to correct the marring, and going more aggressive if I need to

I have a big bottle of iron x at the house, I'm gonna use it when I do the full detail. I think I'm also ordering some blue clay magic, for a mid grade aggressiveness. Pretty sure owning a black truck is gonna make me crazy

I work at a boat manufacturing plant. I park right in front of the tooling shop. So lots and lots of fiberglass dust. So basically microscopic shards of glass. To compound things, my neighborhood has terrible water pressure, so when I do my pre wash rinse, it really doesn't take anything off. I'm seriously weighing getting a foam cannon.

No, that ouch is well deserved. I'm the same way, any scratch gives me anxiety. It almost looks like was something in the clay, but it looked clean to me and didnt feel gritty. There's an even worse one on the drivers side from my dumb ass getting into the truck with a tape measure on my side, caught the back door with the blade on the end of the tape. Felt really dumb after that one.

It is when it's all clean and polished up. I digress though, when it's not clean, you definitely know it.

Similar experience. I took mine to get detailed and then ceramic coated. Looks amazing now. Now scratches are hard to make. And easy to take out when they do. Highly recommend it. The paint isn't very hard/tough on these new trucks and I don't know why.
