Worried about purchasing a new Tundra

Talk about scary, go visit GM-Trucks forum. I came from owning several Chevy trucks. Last one, a 2014 Silverado, had 11 trips to the dealer in 2 years for "calibrations" or recalls. The last two recalls caused me to check out Tundra (driver's seat belt could fail in a head on collision and trailer hitch platform welds could break causing lost load). Terrible 1/2 ton trucks IMO. Many pages of issues...
I have to set a reminder on my calendar to take the Tundra in for service. I had one recall for the rear bumper support replacement, one calibration (sw update) for the IBC and one problem with Blind Spot Monitor and their was a Tech Bulletin out on it, so it was fixed overnight. Most of the service being done on the Tundra is me installing mods that I read about on here!

 

I had those same issues with my 2014 Silverado, one of those recalls involved them hacking out the area where the seatbelt came through the seat. Looked like crap, couldn't believe that was an actual fix handed down by GM.

 

Toyota is one very solid truck; mine is a ‘16 TRD Pro. I had a 2012 F150 Lariat Supercrew with a 5.0 V8, 6 spd auto, and 3:73 electronic locker. Lots of warranty issues: electronic steering failure at 3K miles, paint issues that required repaint, brakes, out of round cylinders with knock, and oil consumption. Sold it at 10K miles and lost a lot of $$. Never buy FoMoCo product ever again. My Pro has been totally trouble free (12K mi). It’s now for sale for $46,900. Why? Don’t drive it much, sits in the garage, and because I own it, want to take the $$ and buy a BMW X5M and have some real driving fun. Great rig, will miss it.

 

Are you sure you want a X5M? My sister had one and it was nothing but problems from the start. BMW parts and maintenance is not cheap to boot. She traded it in for a 4Runner and has had zero problems and she couldn't be happier

 

Yeah I know, but when all systems are go, they are one awesome driving machine. Wish we could afford an Acura NSX. We will see. Thanks.

She just had way too many issues with it and got tired of dealing with it.

I have a 2018 and haven't had a single issue with the TSS-P. I am worried about the cam tower leak, but I'd be more worried about everything else that goes wrong with the Big 3, and it sounds like once it's fixed it's fixed for good. I was really close to getting a Sierra with the 6.2L, but the AFM and vibration issues ultimately scared me away.

Like others have said, the Tundra is the most reliable 1/2 ton out there.

If he gets the 2018, the headlights are LED from the factory. Stereo does suck, but imo that can be fixed with sound deadening on the doors and new speakers, sub, and amp.

This is unrelated to this thread but that (trailer hitch weld failure) was one of the recalls on my 1991 Land Cruiser! It was recalled in 1995. That's the only recall for that though.

Just get one. I have a 2017 with zero issues so far. I have over 5k mikes so far and has been great.
Of course has high resale value, because anyone who buys the truck as a used truck later down the road can still drive it for many more miles. Can’t really say that about other trucks. I really think this truck will last me a life time. Million mile is possible as with the million mile Tundra showed.

 

Ive owned them all and I use to be a TRUE BLUE Ford guy too. In fact I was a General Manager for Ford & Lincoln store for several years. I would not hesitate for a moment. I have supercharged both of my Tundras and I pull a heavy boat and enclosed trailer and never have I had even a hiccup. I left Toyota for a moment and went back to a Ford F-350 and that lasted about a year before I was back into another Tundra. They remind me of Apple...they don't have all the bells and whistles of a Samsung Phone but the Toyotas a lot like Apple, they just work.

Hmmm... i would argue that unlike Ford, Samsung phones work just fine. Mine's worked for 3 years with no problem. However, that has nothing to do with this and I had to say it because I'm a Samsung fanboy

 

If I had had read the Wrangler forum before I bought my first Jeep I never would have purchased it. I went through 2 Wranglers and never had a single issue with either one and both were driven hard on and off road.

 

Reminds me of when Toyota wanted to cut an 1" off accelerator pedal on my 2009 Tacoma. I wanted to get the tranny reflash and the leaf spring TSB done so I hunted around for a dealer that would not hack up my pedal. When I called it a "shade tree mechanic fix" to a phantom problem one dealer hung up on me. It was not until I told the dealer that I bought it from if they cut my pedal they could kiss my business goodbye that I got my TSBs without the pedal hack job. They actually billed Toyota for it but never shortened it. They told me if they cut it and I did not like it I could drive around the block and come back and get a OEM shorter one. I said the pedal is already too small why would I want a shorter one. Bottom line is warranty work is a big expense for car manufacturers and they are going to look for the most cost effective way out until customers complain.

 

Went from a 2015 f250 to a 2017 Tundra 5.7 motor with 4.30 gears. F250 towed like crap transmission sucked had it back to ford several times. Shocks went bad 6 months in just a crappy truck. Dream truck turned nightmare. Leased the Toyota 10 months ago because i wasn’t sure I’d like it. Just bought the lease out yesterday and got the 10 year platinum warranty. Pretty much says it all.

 

How does the Tundra tow compared to your F250 and how is the gas mileage and power? I assume you had a 6.2 in your Ford.

 

Never heard of bed creasing. I can confirm the stock radio sucks on the 2017 but the headlights are just ok.

 

Other than adding timbrens to the rear suspension there’s no comparison. The tundra pulls better than my 250 all around. Mileage is better but Average for a gas motor while towing.

 

I’ve had my Tundra since mid November. 12k+ miles later I like it even more. (2018)

 

There’s really a lot of serious concerns about buying a Tundra.
The biggest problem is that it will have body design and technology that are way way out of style and obsolete long before it’s even close to being worn out.
Then what’re you gonna do?

 

Power and reliability never go out of style.

 

Well here is my take on it,

It is a man made item and anything made by man can and will fail, no ifs about it.

It is Toyota and overall the reliability is pretty solid, but then again each Toyota dealer has a service department and each new Toyota comes with a 3/36 btb and 5/60 powertrain warranty, for a reason.
Show me any other dealer of any brand without the same set up, that's cause sometimes shit breaks.

I bought a 1994 dodge ram 1500 new, drove it from 94-2002, great truck, replaced 2 water pumps under warranty and at 130,000 I replaced the starter, sold it with 150,000 for $5,000, guy wrecked it 2 months later, sad.

I bought a 1988 chevy that was a piece of crap from day 1, kept it a year after it spend 4 months in and out of the shop trying to fix all of the issues, ya GM worked on it for free, but what a piece of junk.

Its all a roll of the dice, but I think Toyota will give you more piece of mind than others, at least that's my take.

 

Just sold my 2008 Tundra today with 131k. Over 18k. Getting a new tundra next week. Had ford and chevys. Alwas had something wrong. My 08 has done everything ive asked and more.

Search the web for "Ford F150 problems", "Chevy 1500 Problems", "Dodge truck' problems and "Tundra Problems". Look at the results and try and spot the trends and then make up your own mind.

 

My head unit went out on my 2017 Tundra TRD Pro with 3000 miles. It happens to the best of us unfortunately.

 

Yeah it does happen unfortunately no car or truck is perfect but I’m gonna guess your tundra never turned off in the middle of you driving on the highway like my ram did lol

 

every car or truck will have its issues. some are easy to fix and others are not. generally speaking Toyota/Lexus are very reliable vehicle.

I was driving my brand new 1997 Jeep Wrangler down the road near work and my gear shifter (manual trans) literally popped off and I was holding it my hand wondering what the hell do I do now, Ha Ha. And that was before Daimler took over. I will never own a Daimler Chrysler vehicle again, EVER.
