I searched the forums and found some information, but couldn’t locate anything re my problem. If I missed it I apologize for duplicating threads.

My wife’s Toyota has the full TSS and seems to work fine as it has notified us in the past of an impending crash. I decided to check my Tundra. It comes with the TSS Pre Collision as well. I have a long driveway and about 200 feet up the driveway I placed two large wardrobe boxes. Initially side by side and then one on top of each other. I just crashed into them. No warnings or anything. Next I added tinfoil to the boxes. Same thing happened. Anyone have any ideas. I’m trying to find a cardboard back end of a car to try, with little luck. Thank you!

Speed may be a factor? I know LDA is 32 mph or greater..

Good point, it’s possible, but it definitely works at 25 in my wife’s Prius. LDA in the Prius stops less than 33, but the Pre Collision activated several times when someone is turning right and I speed up to 25. If the car in front takes their time turning it thinks im going to ram them and flashes warnings.

Agreed, our Highlander seems to allow warnings for Pre Collision well under the 33 MPH... Toyota has a great tech hotline and you could call to get verification.

    Found this document:
    https://www.toyota.com/toyota-owners-theme/pdf/toyota_safety_sense.pdf

"When the Pre-Collision System3 determines that the possibility of a frontal collision with that vehicle is high, it prompts the driver to take evasive action and brake, by using an audio and visual alert • These alerts operate when the vehicle speed is between approximately 7 to 85 miles-per-hour (MPH) for potential collisions with a vehicle (Alerts are designed to function prior to auto brake function at speeds between approximately 10 to 85 MPH. Alert and brake functions may occur simultaneously for PCS operational speeds below 10 MPH.)"

I just called the service department to pick their brain and they said “it doesn’t usually work when it’s cold out”. It’s about 25 degrees.

I informed him my wife’s Prius works fine in the cold and he said “it’s a different set up”.

Thank you. I’ll give them a call just to confirm. It doesn’t make sense a 2017 Prius works better than a 2018 Tundra.

Lower to the ground? Maybe TSS is set up to allow for pedestrian to pass UNDER the Tundra?:transformer:

is it turned on? you can turn it off. Mine slams on the breaks if it thinks you are not stopping fast enough.

works great on my 2018 camry, saved my bacon more than once. I think it's a great add on on a commuter car.

I'm actually pretty sure mine is not working either. I just had the software update done last week from the recall.
I know for sure my lane detection isn't working (and yes its turned on, highest sensitivity) and I no longer ever get warnings of collisions when I get close to things.
I posted about this a few days ago in a different thread.
I asked my Toyota what was in the recall software changes they were loading and they told me they had no idea and would print it up for me to read it (nice, not!).
When I get home from a trip I'm going to call them again, I think there are multiple issues going on with TSS with 18 Tundras

Mine never breaks, I tried to let it get close while in traffic and it definitely isn't working.

Interestingly when I first brought the truck home a month ago it did work, but no longer does. I wish it did!

I do know that my Pre Collision malfunction light comes on when it is cold, sub 30 degrees. I need to have the software update performed from the recall. My guess is, your tech was right. If they identified that the issue is when it is cold, this cold be the issue. My ONLY concern is, I do hope the software fix isnt turning OFF the Pre Collision when it is sub 30 degrees as a way to mask the error light from going off, potentially setting up a very large lawsuit if the system doesn't respond as it should throughout ANY temp!

Yes it is turned on. Mine seems to default on even if I turn it off and get back into the truck. I’ve only had it a couple of weeks and it has no active recalls listed. As for the cold, it’s possible, but the Camry we test drove was when it was minus 20F and it worked fine. My wife’s works fine because she called me this morning complaining it made her spill her coffee. It was 15F then.

Not sure then. I have mine leveled with the TRD Pro suspension which they say could mess up the tss but I have had it slam in the breaks twice and had it throw the warning but not slam on the breaks because someone had their nose out at a stop sign the other day.

Yes as I said earlier its on, lane detection, parking assist, and I almost always use adaptive cruise on the highway - I leave everything set to on highest sensitivity.
It used to work and now doesn't. Lane detection 100% doesn't work with highest sensitivity selected. It worked fine 1st week after I drove it home a month ago.
About 3 weeks ago while driving in sleet on cruise I got an error message saying radar cruise control unavailable clean sensor which promptly turned my cruise off.
Since then lane detect hasn't worked and precollision isn't working.
I got the software update last week. I live in the northeast lots of cold weather. I have read of others who have also said the cold has affected their TSS - search throbbnation on you tube he did a video on it.
Here is a picture of the error I got a few weeks back, since about then things haven't been working even though I got the software update.

Thanks for creating this thread I think this is a real issue (certainly is for me).

When I get back to town next week I'll call my dealership and share what I learn.

that's a pretty interesting thought because some of my systems don't work but I never see any error messages now...

Cleaning the sensor is as easy as stopping, turning the truck off and wipe the emblem in the grille.....I had to do it few times. Same goes for the W/S camera.

As far as the collision prevention goes, mine works, it slammed on the brakes faster then I reacted when I came around a curve and my lane was blocked by a disabled vehicle. Before that I tried to set the alarm off intentionally but never succeeded (probable not big enough cohunes).

Thanks Smoosh I'm sure it will get fixed eventually but I'm just concerned with him much time it's going to take on my end to get to that point (have a newborn, lots of work hours etc).
My dealership so far wasn't very good with recall software update last week so im dreading how much work it will take to figure this out. (They didn't care about what problems there are, what the software was actually fixing etc).
Im actually tempted to be extra careful driving for another month or so and see if more recalls come in which may actually have the fix.

Yes thanks I cleaned the sensor multiple times now as its happened twice.
In general adaptive cruise is working fine, Lane detection doesn't work...precollision not working will post more when I know more.
Seems my issue may be similar to the originator of the thread (also '18 limited crewmax)

Lane detection is the camera in the top of the windshield.

I’m sure you cleaned that too but just wanted to throw that out there.

Thanks I didn't know that is where that sensor is but the truck was just washed and is pretty spotless.
Also the error I got about cleaning the sensor and pasted the picture of was for the radar.
Lane detection hasn't worked for weeks, check it every time I get in the truck and am amazed when I cross the line and no longer hear the beeps. I think all the issues are related.

I know there is another recall notice on my kitchen table for me to open when I get home...we'll see if it's related.
Has everyone else also received a few recall notices the past 4 weeks?

I've noticed my PCS Off light illuminating when cold out, <39F, although the dash menu shows it in operation. I have not tested the system, hopefully it's working.
