Transfer Flow vs. LRA (long range automotive) fuel tank

I live in Houston and regularly commute to Louisiana and back. I have been through several hurricanes and as most people in the south... and some in the north know, fuel can be a scarce commodity during an evacuation. My whole thought process is to get from Louisiana back home to Houston on one tank of gas. As it is now with my 2014's (I call her Mildred) 26 gallons of fuel, I have to at least make one stop, and that is not counting if I encounter traffic (Which is likely in a hurricane scenario). I want to know if anyone here has had experience with the LRA tundra fuel tank? I have looked at other forums and found plenty of people that have installed a Transfer Flow tank, but I come up with nothing for the LRA. The reason I ask is that the main complaint about the TF tank is how it protrudes past the frame and the rear axle. I have just been able to look at a few pictures of the LRA https://longrangeautomotive.com.au/Toyota-Tundra-175L-Replacement~344 and it looks to be beveled on all the ends as well as not having a flat bottom, but rising with the frame. Any thoughts? Anyone? P.S. This tank is made in AU. I sent an email to them and after a week I was finally contacted by a US distributor and this is what they sent me:

    Hi–

I cannot speak to the TF product, but the LRA tank is 46 gallons, made of aluminized steel. The tank doesn’t care what fuel is in it and I am not sure what clearances are. I can only offer photos at this link https://longrangeautomotive.com.au/Toyota-Tundra-175L-Replacement~344

We are in the process of establishing US warranty and will offer 5 years. Pricing is $1,295 plus motor freight.

I would love to help you own a Long Range tank, so please feel free to call my direct number with questions or to place an order.

It’s nice to see a different option other than transfer flow. Priced about the same.

LRA seems more tucked in and higher than the transfer flow

looks good. Probably don't need a skid plate vs the oem gas tank.

I’ve been back and forth whether I should buy a bigger gas tank or get jerry cans like those overland rigs, weight vs space(room with multiple jerry cans) ....hmmmmm?!!!!

The picture of the transfer flow tank makes it look like it is much lower than it is. At least,on mine. The front end is nearly flush with the frame and the rear is about 1 1/2” below the frame. Both the pumpkin and the lower shock mount are much lower so that should never be a problem. The tank is so strongly built that I don’t feel a skid is needed. The Australian tank does have a nicely beveled rear corner that I wish I had. It’s only a risk when backing up, but I’ve got some concerns that it could hit a rock or stump, when in reverse.
As far as jerry cans or any variation of em, I will never do that again. Leaks and spillage, splashes on the truck, fumes and fire hazards make them a no-starter. I did that for years, but never again.

Thanks for the wisdom, I agree the shock mounts then the diff are still lower than the TF. I think the only time you’ll hit the tank is in a high centered situation, just cover it with line-x. line-x is strong, hell it survived a shotgun blast and C4 on an episode of myth busters.

I like the 46 gallon LRA because of the bevel, and I like the 46 gallon TF because of the Line-X option. I think I will just take the best of both worlds and buy an AU LRA tank then get US Line-X put on it. Yep.... I think that will do that. Seems good. I should make deals with Trump!

Jerry cans are cool butttt- Fuel goes bad faster in small amounts. You have to figure out a good way for theives to F off. And they take up valuable room for other fun evacuation party supplies.
    Just sayin

I've been using jerry cans for 5 years. My fuel cans are NATO with metal flex spouts and my water are US military water cans. I can carry up to a total of 7 cans in any combination of water/fuel. I never spill a drop of fuel, I can dump an entire 5 ga can of fuel in 30 seconds, and they have survived tens of thousands of miles of the hardest wheeling you can imagine in the most extreme desert environments on earth. I strap them down with a single ratchet strap and floor mounted cargo rails and they never move or shift. I make sure to dump them every few months and I have never had a bad fuel problem

There is a reason NATO cans have been in use for over 60 years. The only reason I would be interested in an extended tank is to move the fuel weight from the bed behind the cab (which is a very good location from a CG point of view), to below the bed in order to free up a little bed space. But I would only gain about 14" x 32.5" of bed space and I would lose important ground clearance in front of the rear wheel where I need as much clearance as I can get. Hence the reason I am still using the cans...

    @osidepunker
How do you keep your spout/nozzles clean and dust free? This was always a hassle for me. I also occasionally had gaskets dry out and fail. Probably because I was running exclusively around AZ and Mexico.

Working with, and supervising many projects with large earth moving requirements, I became acquainted with a saying (regarding profitability). “Moving dirt twice costs 2 times as much”
To paraphrase, “moving fuel twice creates 2 times the risk” regarding hazard or contamination.
Dumping a can in 30 seconds is amazing!

I wrap the nozzle in a rag and store it in my in-cab gear boxes. No fuel smell in the cab. Seals are 5 years old and still seal. I've never had a problem dumping cans. No spills no leaks no bad fuel no dirty fuel.

If these cans are good enough for miltary troops all over the world, they are good enough for me. The only reason they aren't used in the US is because of environmental concerns.

I think i might look at getting one of these and have it tied into the main line, would be way cheaper and you would have the same capacity.
i am sure they could make it so it tucks tight beind the fender well.
they make custom tanks, the 15 gallon one is only $260.
15 gall. plus 26 would get you to 41 with nothing hanging below frame.

So... I decide to get the LRA tank. I will have to wait till the June order comes in from AU. I am ordering one tomorrow. So come June, I will be installing the LRA 46 gallon tank. I will do a write up and instructions on it. (with pictures, cause I know how much yall guys like pictures.) Hopefully that will help if anyone else is undecided on one of these things. For all that I can see, this tank has all the attributes of the transferflow.... but with better clearances and bevels.

Yes, I will get it Line-x'ed when I get home. Unless someone knows of a better coating that could be applied to it?

    Update:

Cruiser Brothers fully line-xed tank before it left Stockton.

    Update:

Tank did not arrive at my location untill the day I left to go offshore. It will be another 3 weeks before install. (I will get my wife to take pictures and I will post them)
