Bought my tundra from the same dealer I bought my last 6 Toyota’s. Well I was pretty tired of my 17 Tacoma. It had a cam sensor recall, differential recall, dash rattled, windows rattled and then there was the typical crappy engine trans combo that performed like a pig. Then one afternoon I’m driving home and the check engine light come on. Drive the truck straight to the dealer to find out the trans solinoids and the ECM chip had to be replaced. So now I’ve about had it, but have gained some leverage. So I wrote a professional email to the owners about how dissatisfied I am with this 2017 Tacoma with only 19k miles. Being a good customer for this dealer, I now have some leverage. In the letter I called the # on the trade in value and requested 6k off of any Tundra on the lot. The customer relation MGR was so anxious to make me happy, I got almost all I asked for. I walked in the lot with nothing to negotiate other than 300 more for my trade. Ended up paying 36.5k on a well featured 2017 sr5 Crewmax. I added a tire package, pro grill and nerf bars. While you pretty much loose money doing a trade like this, I was pretty happy. Love the tundra.

    Question...
I have a 2015 ford f150 supercrew in great condition that was quoted $24,000.00 for trade in but I owe $25,500.00. How do I go about working my deal to get under invoice and a higher trade in value? Do I mention the trade in early on or do I wait? O too am.asking different dealerships to give me the best quote for a Tundra buy need to know how and when and what to say about my trade-in.
    Thanks

Great write up. Thank you for taking the time to put this together. One question, what happens if you have a truck to trade in?

Sell it yourself. List on all websites and any forums you are a member of. Expect to get some lowball offers and even some car buying services making offers. When the lowballers call or email just tell them the price is in the listing. If you want to trade just tell dealers what you want and stick to it.

Hello, I'm new to the Tundra forums. I just sold my 09 Tacoma a few hours ago and now I'm in the search for a Tundra.
I'm using this process now. I went thru my credit union car buying program and they use Trucar.
I'm emailing with 3 dealers so far.

I'm looking to get a '18 Tundra Limited Crewmax 4x4 Offroad package. They are around $46-48 in my area.
Do you guys think that if I can get this truck close to $40k I did good?

Yes, that would be a great deal on a limited 4x4. Good luck and keep us posted!

Well, I did some emailing back and forth today and so far the best price I got quoted for a 18' Limited TRD offroad is $43,222. I believe I can get at least another $1000-2000 off.

Maybe. Gotta be careful you don't go lower than their retail side mark-up (if they're high volume, Toyota will pay them too, on the back end). I think what you're thinking sounds possible... but you may want to find the "sweet spot". Or engage with more than 3 dealerships (looking for the one with the highest volume bonus in reach).

If you don't have several (more than 3) close dealerships, I'd be careful about offering lower than that "dealer cost" in case the sales manager calls your bluff (and has the one configuration and colour you want writhin 1,000 miles. Maybe not a problem for you, but I wanted Inferno in a very specific configuration).

I spent the $40 or whatever it was to buy the Fighting Chance reports (internet search) before I bought my 2017 Toyota Tundra. Showed "dealer cost" for every package and option. Yes, the dealerships get a kick back from Toyota, the amount of which varies based on each dealer's sales volume, and may change month to month, but they won't usually go below the "dealer cost", so if you submit an offer less than this, they may dismiss you-- or at least know you haven't done your homework, which definitely detracts from your power bluffing. Employees get the "dealer cost" with no further reduction....

I'll be following closely, and if your deal goes well, I'll hope to learn anything you learn on the way and are willing to share.

$40 would be good deal on 2018 SR5. I had dealer down to $39k on a 2017 TRD OR and that was it. I wanted another $1k on new one or trade and they let me walk which I did.

The only thing I would add to this great write up is once you get down to the final 2 or 4 - what are their hidden fee's!? Dealers must charge tax, title and license, beyond that is where they really make their money. You mentioned paint protection and tinting but I'm talking like the doc fee, dealer prep, advertising fee,delivery/destination charge, fuel surcharge etc. etc. One dealer may charge $100 and another $400 just for a doc fee. They typically will not tell you these prices until after you negotiated everything and your sitting there writing the check. They also will act like they are non-negotiable - but they are negotiable.

Well, I went to see the dealer that had offer me the price. It turns out they did not have the truck. "it was on the way" to a Southeast Toyota prep where they add the options. They told me that once those options are added cannot be taken off.
The one they had on the way was the MGM color but the leather was graphite, which I did not really liked.
They said they would find me another one with black leather and they did. This one was "on the way" to another dealer and if I wanted this one they must charge an extra fee to get it.

I told them to price me out the 2nd one. The out the door price was $46,5xx.00. Their "document fee" was $895 which I thought was ridiculous for filing papers. Now they just have to push and submit the forms. I asked them why so much for just electronic filing forms and they said that they have to pay a separate department and this fee is non-negotiable.

I also wanted the predator steps included in the final price. When I told them I would like the out the door price to be $45k and we would have a deal, the guy went back to the manager and came back with $45,500. I thought this was as close as I was going to get so we went thru all the numbers again. I they took off the steps out to come down on a better price. So that was kinda sneaky and said not thanks. My wife and I started walking out and he said, give me 30 secs more. Came back and just said, "this price is still good for you if you want to come back"

I must start a new search. I'm going thru my Credit Union car search service and they use Trucar and work with dealers to get better pricing I guess. I haven't bought a new car in like 25 yrs so not sure how this services work.

Doc fees in Texas are capped. The cap is like $160. Finance guy tried to tack on a $600 fee when I bought mine. I said get me the keys to my trade I am out of here. He removed it. He just explained as something they charged everyone. A different finance dude the day before told me it gave me free oil changes for 100k. I told him sorry I do my own. I wrote a bad review on the dealer based on their attempt to screw me out of $600. I have not heard one peep out of them since.

The most powerful tool in the box is the ability to walk away if you are not completely happy. Also don't shop for a truck if you need one right away. Great post.

The same thing happened to me told me they had the truck didn't have it etc played games with me for a week. I'm very disappointed in my Toyota dealership and am going to write a bad review on cars.com and any other place I can tell someone.

I got an '18 4x4 off road limited sticker was $50,400 out the door for $46,800 I think I could have gotten a few $ cheaper but I also had them color match the door handles and mirrors as I didn't like the chrome. If I had to do it again I would have asked them to pay for the platinum honeycomb grill that I ended up ordering a few days later for $550.
My point is if you think you may make changes to the look of the truck later try to work it into the deal.

    Well, I finally got one.
    2018 Limited 4x4 off road
    Fender flares
    Predator Bars
    MGM color
    LED Bed lights
    $48,000
I was talking to about 4 dealer and they all were pretty much around the same amount out the door. Some dealers were about 150 miles away so I drop those and just focused the one around my area. Went back and forth with 2 of them last week and none would budge, they wanted $50k. Told them, whoever can meet our number, we would go there now and make a deal.

The truck should be in my hands no later than Wed this week. I will post some pics as soon as I can.
Thanks to this article, I learned a few things. This is my first new vehicle purchase.

I've heard that when you ask to see their invoice they bring you not the real invoice but one that's marked up. Do dealers play you with different invoices.

I don’t think they do. But I dont believe the invoice reflects at all what they paid. There are hold-backs, rebates, sales volume rebates that you will never see. Negotiate a price that makes you happy. Everything else is a shell game.

Is there a model/configuration list like they had on the tacoma forums for instance "7556" is a trd offroad doublecab short bed. Just an example. Would be helpful for determining what config packages and options to request.

    A bunch
To get around this I negotiated ONLY on the out-the-door price. This would include everything that would have been financed - taxes, dealer fees, etc. And I did this before they knew if I had a trade-in or not. I wasn't able to do the pitting the dealerships on one another as only 1 had what I would have bought (Inferno, MGM, or Silver DC TRD Off Road, end of August purchase - most had white or black ones), but lucky for me they had 6 Inferno in their stock so it only took a few emails before they gave me an out-the-door number before mods.

I work at a Toyota Dealership in South Florida and strongly agree. I work for the internet department and if you know your product it comes down to a good experience over the phone before visiting the dealer. If you can't be on the same page with whoever is going to help you how can you expect to get a good deal or feel good about what your about to purchase?
