I distinctly remember picking up the TRD Pro Billstiens from the guys at Expidition One in a blizzard. Then I proceeded to install while it was below zero. Had to chip the ice out of the way to remove the lower shock bolts.

Working on the electrical. Ended up mounting the power distribution panel on top of the existing fuse box with a circuit breaker.

    IMG_0751.jpg

Ended up relocating the “tow/haul” button and the sliding rear window switch to make room for missile switches

Air compressor comes in handy too. Side note, if you plan on inflating 6 tubes, you will melt a standard air hose.

    Doing a little maintenance.

Truck developed a misfire and threw codes P0300, P0305, P0306. Cleaned the throttle body. It needed it. Helped a little but, it turned out my iridium plugs were smoked after only 30,000 miles.

As it happened, a week later my CEL came back on throwing code P2443, the Air Injection pump went out. Snuck in just under warranty at 146,000 miles.

Got to run a brand new Tacoma while the truck was in the shop. It was nice, but I gotta say it would be hard to go back to a smaller rig.
    IMG_0773.jpg

While they were at it I had the dealership perform a zero point calibration. Hopefully this will remedy the hyperactive stability control that was kicking on every time I took a sharp corner after installing 275/70-18 Falken Wildpeak AT/3w last summer.

Replaced rotors, pads and upgraded to stainless steel lines from stop-tech. Much better brake feel.

    IMG_1612.jpg

Also added Daystar airbag cradles to reclaim lost suspension droop. Helped the ride quality quite a bit.

Bolted up an AFe catback exhaust. Very straightforward install. I ended up cutting the old exhaust off. Replaced the rusted factory nuts and bolts with (4) M10x30s perfect length and width. Install took almost exactly an hour from start to finish.

    FB7826B2-4F92-4CE5-9D1A-2A140894281F.jpg

Exhaust note is deep and mellow. Cruising at 75 it’s factory quiet. There is some drone around 1500 RPM but, $500 for a full stainless system, I’ll put up with it.

At first I’d say there wasn’t much performance improvement, but after putting on a few miles I notice the truck seems to be able to hang onto a gear longer on hills that usually require a downshift.

Now when I drive through tunnels I roll the window down.

Hardwired some USB ports for charging. Added three total. One with a volt meter under the dash, one in the center console and one on the rear of the center console. They are all 2.1a for fast charging. It’s nice to have a solid connection now. I don’t have to worry about the plug in converters malfunctioning. The USB plugs were slightly larger than the factory 12v outlets but, if I remember correctly a 1&1/8” hole saw was perfect.

Found a broken leaf spring and as they say, “if you break it, upgrade it.”

    AF51ADB4-25B6-445D-8D88-C5FF42441B34.jpg
Called around to a couple of local spring shops but nobody had quite what I was looking for at a reasonable price point. Ended up getting a set of Old Man Emu (OME) Dakar springs from 4wheel parts.

    8BC86D82-4303-4322-8169-752B8F054B96.jpg

Installation was straightforward. Start to finish install, was about an hour and a half. I do need to find longer U-bolts to reattach the airbag cradles, but I’m contemplating a different method of attachment. Interestingly the leaf broke at the point where the cradle bolt pinched the spring.

I did fab up extension brackets for the brake and abs lines. Now when I’m at full droop I won’t have to worry about damage.

So far I’m very impressed with the springs. The ride is completely transformed. Truck feels planted and does a much better job of soaking up the big hits. I have a feeling that the stock leaf springs, although completely sacked out, were too stiff for the TRD Pro shocks, because while the ride was good, it was never “plush.”

The only problem is that the additional lift makes me think the truck would look better with 35s...

Started building some drawers for the bed. It’s a DIY version of the Decked system that, excluding labor, is about half the cost.

Jumped on a group deal for RCI Offroad skid plates. Purchased the engine and trans/transfer skids. 7145A02A-50B0-4D2A-8B4F-699526809510.jpgSuper pumped to remove the factory skid for the last time. Dropping this every time you change the oil is for the birds.

There’s no comparison to the stock units. Superb fit and finish.

Install was straightforward. The only challenging part was fastening the carriage bolts. This would have been easier if I had some gear wrenches and the outside temperature had stayed above freezing... Even so, install only took about an hour.

After all the activity on the site regarding the Coachbuilder group buy I finally got around to contacting @ekstromdesign about some needed parts.

Grabbed a set of poly bushings to replace the rubber units that came in the ARB springs and some 1” spacers to help level this beast.

Started with the bushings. Turns out the ARB bushings only lasted a few thousand miles of abuse!

Install was straightforward only took about 30min. in 20° morning temps. Spent more time struggling with the $20 press I got from the Home Depot than assembly/disassembly.

Looking forward to throwing the spacers in when I have a little more time. Also, I need to order some superbumps for the front.

Made a few electrical updates. 58DCE9E0-4344-4EB9-BB21-EA0DF8B959D8.jpgHere’s the old setup

New fuse/relay box and battery. It’s a heck of a lot cleaner and it’s easier to access the factory fuse box.

Ended up replacing the factory fogs with the Baja Designs squadron sport amber wide cornering. Big improvements all around.

Hard to tell from the photo, but the squadron’s help tremendously during poor weather conditions. They allowed me to see the edges of the road during this white out where the factory headlights couldn’t.
