Alex would never run away from the Duke boys. They’re just his type.

so, i'm taking some mental health days from the day job this week. everything kind of got fubar'd recently and i need some breathing room. that being said, i decided, probably against better judgement, to check in here before checking out for the day. bluebird spring day here and i'm not sitting behind a computer if i don't have to today.

anyway, read all 9 pages of this thread. watched all the videos. remembered making the same race to superstition in my FJ in the days before everyone was mounting a gopro to their windshield. now you pricks have me making a list. that list has me rethinking some aspects of my photography and thinking about how much fun it would be to chase KOH, Mint, and Baja. bunch of a-holes you guys are.

so, bypasses up front. where does the lower end mount to the stock lower arm? fab work needed? is that something that comes with the secondary hoop, either TC or Camburg? any benefit to replacing the lower arms if you don't go full LT?

my list for the rear is king triple bypasses with camburg's mount relocation kit. probably going to have to get in touch with alcan on different leaf packs.

based on the bump stop debate in the other thread, i have those marked as tentative.

now, i'm off to learn how to weld, buy some lottery tickets and rob the bank down the street...

Yeah the TC, Camburg and Icon secondary hoop kits all come with weld-on tabs for the secondary shock to attach to the stock lower.
TC makes a stock length lower with a secondary tab already in it, but it’s idiotically high priced. And I don’t know anyone who has bent a stock lower - they’re pure beef from the factory.

Chasing the Dusty Times eh? I’ve long considered a brand new Fear and Loathing type of lifestyle... I’m not a lawyer, but for some mescaline and a handful of uppers, I’d play one in your midlife crisis.

Yep, I think that setup will work for most of us unless you have more monies, that’s my starting point, don’t wanna jump to full LT just yet when I’m sure that will make me happy. I’m not trying to race anyone but I wanna go faster than normal “off-roading”. If that is not sufficient then LT is the answer, naw mean?!

That’s not a starting point bro. That’s a serviceable ending point too. Lots of guys with MT and MT2 that go on trips with us. They do just fine.

Yes. You don't need a fully built truck for our trips. The "Speed" in SGU refers to how much ground we cover on a trip. Not how fast we drive. We like to wander and explore and see and experience as much as we can. Smashing trails is just a fun secondary activity.

Good tires and being self-sufficient is all that you need to hang with us

perfect, thanks for the info. idiotically high priced isn't the term i'd use for the TC lowers. $3k?!?

the midlife crisis has been ongoing for at least the last 10 years. right now, it's reaching full blown armageddon stage. you're welcome to play any character you want and i'll supply whatever i can.

a well dialed in MT2 is titties. other than the knee high whoops, i've been able to keep up with the LT guys most of the time. most. not saying MT2 is like LT but if its dialed in right and you like pushing your rig it'll go fast. even on just 5 shocks LOL

Yeeeehaw! My own midlife crisis is starting to have Baja written all over it. I basically want a straw hut, a couple palm trees, and margaritas. If I figure that out, I'll send you an invite.

    Best radio message ever

    Craig: hows the ride Dragos?
Dragos: it's great! these jumps at 85 is about perfect!
Craig: you sure? seems like it would feel strange with only one rear shock.
Dragos: nope! can't even tell. going too fast to notice!

i used to spend a lot of time down there. many moons ago, i had a friend with a plane. he kept it out in el centro and at least once a month, i'd fly down with him. gonzaga bay. one of my favorite places on earth. when i was going down there, it was a small fishing village with a row of houses built by full time ex-pats. almost everyone had a plane but you could only fly in at low tide otherwise the runway was under water. once a week, the pacifico truck would drive through. fishing was epic as was the diving/freediving/spearfishing. got to spend time with whale sharks. great memories.

i never drove down there, always flew, but i always wanted to make the drive. i had thought about heading down, spending a few days there, then continuing down the gulf coast to where you can catch the ferry to the mainland. once there, you can buzz to barrancas del cobre. that's a spot i've wanted to see for a long time.

After watching Expedition Overland, that looks like a place that’d be a fun trip. Though part of me would be nervous about going into northern Mexico, and being unarmed.

Sounds like you need to get in our Fall Baja planning. We're tentatively targeting a week in the autumn for a drive however far south we can make it. Could be 9 days or 8 or something. If we make it all the way down to Cabo, awesome. If we get as far as Bay of LA, awesome. Just want to hit the dirt trails and beaches and some of the old Spanish Missions. Super chill.

are you planning on cruising the streets of juarez? border towns are way different than what you will find deeper into the country. baja has the same issues as the mainland. get south of ensenada and the country is totally different. just like any other country, you show up flashy and disrespectful, people will take notice. definitely not discounting the potential but that's all it is, potential and it exists anywhere you travel.

that sounds amazeballs. right now i'm not sure i'll be able to pull that kind of time. trying to make a significant change towards the better but i won't have anything dialed until june.

Yeah, you're spot on about the border towns and stuff. We'd just cruise right through them until south of Ensenada (after probably stopping in Ens for some fish tacos ;))

And no rush on any kind of committment - we've been trying to get to Baja for 2 or 3 years now... :bananadead:

The good news is, as we've been doing more and more research, I'm getting more comfortable with the idea of doing it on our own without a paid guide. Full blown SGU Style - plan loosely, explore flexibly, maximize enjoyment.

I've done that drive to Cabo it was a blast, literally! Hurricane Juliet hit the day after we arrived in Cabo, I checked us into a hotel and parked behind the Hotel's Dodge Ram. Came out the next day and the side of the Dodge had been sand blasted and was mostly primer and bare metal.
