This started a few weeks ago and has caused my stress and anxiety to go through the roof every time I drive now. From 45 mph To 60 mph my truck makes a deep strong rumble/vibration noise. When I let off the throttle it completely goes away, it is only under power. I just had my tires balanced and rotated. I’m wanting to say it’s in the transmission or driveshaft, or rear end. A key factor is this: the RPMs do not change the vibration sound, only change in speed. I’ve checked the driveshaft, and it only has a small amount of play. There is a rubber piece in the middle of the driveshaft where the small amount of play is at. It doesn’t matter if it’s in third fourth or overdrive, the vibration is the same so maybe that eliminates transmission? When I downshift, I get a quick hi pitched squeak noise like something is slipping at first, I don’t know. Any ideas are greatly appreciated, I am at a loss.

Your driveshaft will always be spinning the same speed when you are in the miles per hour you were talking about. Regardless of what gear it is in. I would definitely look closer at that carrier bearing. Might be a good time to think about those U joints too. Make sure no weights are missing on the driveshaft. It could be out of balance.

Could be the U joints? imbalance in driveshaft is a possibility as well

I did not even know the driveshaft had to be balanced. I will look into that, and can you elaborate more on what a carrier bearing is?

It’s that center here rubber piece you were talking about. You have a two piece driveshaft correct?

Correct I do, I just did a quick YouTube search and understand it now. Should there be any movement whatsoever in that carrier bearing? I can push on it real hard and move the driveshaft, it but it does not have much play otherwise.

Hopefully someone else will chime in with a little more experience on these carrier bearings. But I don’t think you should be able to move it much. Imagine the torque that is being put on it when under load. How many miles do you have on the truck?

I realize you said you had the tires rotated. Maybe try moving them around again. Try the rears on the front and see if the problem goes away.

Edit: Take it back to them and have them swap them around for you. Tell them you think the tires may be still out of balance. And you would like them swapped temporarily to confirm if it is the tires or your truck.

Well, it was doing this before I had them rotated and balanced and I was hoping that would take care of the problem but it didn’t change anything.

I want to say my best guess is still the carrier bearing. I’m not 100% to be honest. I have not experienced this exact dilemma on any of my vehicles. But I know they go out. My friend had something similar going on on his Dakota. I know it’s not a Toyota but it does have a center carrier bearing. We replaced it and it cured it.

I have recorded a few clips. Tonight I will try to upload them on YouTube and provide the link. It’s difficult to hear, mainly just hear my dash rattling from vibration.

If it’s not raining when I get home I’ll check my 2wd 03 Sequoia. I’m not sure if they share the same driveshaft but I’m pretty sure it has a carrier bearing. I’ll check for slop. That thing is smooth as butter to drive.

Thanks! When I push on my driveshaft it’s just a small but difficult budge.

Do the U joints on these need to be pressed in and out or are they replaceable by hand?

Truck is fixed. It was this U joint gone bad that caused all my issues. I dropped the driveshaft thinking I would be replacing the carrier bearing, but when I inspected the u joints I knew what the real problem was. I never changed anything else besides this joint. Thanks for all the help guys. Last night I did the rotors and brakes, and today this. It has never driven so smooth! image.jpg

I meant to update this for you. I checked my Sequoia and it has no carrier bearing. I have a one piece driveshaft so I would’ve been no help.
