So I was just checking out a ford forum, and a new guy wanted to buy a truck, and was deciding between F-150 or Tundra, and this one of the responds he got.

Please, don't compare Ford with Toyota when it comes to reliability. If you're looking for a reliability, get a Toyota. I'll get bashed for saying that because people here only swear by Ford, but let me tell you that my F150 is my first American brand vehicle, and by far, the less reliable I've owned (I've visited the dealership at least 1x per month since I bought it brand new in August 2018).

Numbers don't lie - Toyota has always been more reliable than Ford. However, I still prefer my F150 over the Tundra, and do believe that the F150 is a better pickup truck than the Tundra, but not more reliable.

He even turned around and said the F150 is a better truck. WTF!? I would think reliability should be number one. So how is it better? Because it’s more car like? It has more bells and whistle’s? The false gas mileage claims? I don’t see how it is a better pick up. They rate it to tow more but that doesn’t mean shit.

Reliability obviously isn't a priority for some people if you don't mind frequently heading to the dealer for repairs. A lot of guys get a truck and keep it through the warranty period, then just trade it in on the new model when the warranty expires. Those of us that are a little more conscientious about finances opt for more reliable vehicles.

    Right!!! Exactly my thoughts.
He was right until he said he believes ford is a better pickup. After he takes his to the shop every month, but yet it’s a better pickup

I think some people are just conditioned to regular trips to the service department for more than just routine maintenance as well as losing their ass on resale value.

I remember my F150. . . Constantly something wrong with it. After the head gaskets blew, I was done with Ford. I have 0 regrets with my first gen Tunda. That 4.7 is nothing to blink at. I was impressed with as heavy as the truck is. Pulls whatever I put behind it. I don't need all that fancy tech doo-dad crap. My next truck will be a gen 2 with a 5.7. But, mind you, I'm not getting rid of my first gen. She's a keeper.

My buddies '17 f150 has been back to the dealership repeatedly for burning oil with less than 10,000 miles on the engine.. its the ecoshit engine. hes ready to claim it as a lemon.

Sidenote: i was at mammoth earlier last month and these little bops were walking around the shop talking about american made trucks.. saying ford was made in mexico, etc (at least that part was right) and then declared if you want american buy RAMS.

i wanted to correct her, but itd be like stoking the fire of youtube trolls :L

I traded in my F150 with the 5L for the Tundra. The dashboards on the XLT's tends to warp. Look on the dealership lot and you will see how many are already warping. The F150's devalue like crazy. Just look out for all of the ads. (i.e. It's Ford Truck Month!!, Ram Truck Month, GM has one too i believe) Once the $13000 rebates hit on the F150's, the value drops fast. I test drove the Ecoboom before i got the Tundra and it drove nice with the 10 Speed trans. I just didn't want to deal with the same issues as with the one i traded (noisy leaf springs, dash, loose driver door, door lock issues, rear end which would always jerk around, etc) in so i went to the Tundra.

I have a Tundra now, had a Taco. Wife has a Corolla S now that will be traded on a Highlander after our first child is born in the fall. I’m not afraid to admit I’ve been considering an F150 for my next truck if I decide to upgrade this summer. I love my Toyota’s but I’m not a fan boy and am not married to Toyota for my next truck. I do like the F150s a lot and some of the extra gizmos. I know some say “just more to go wrong” but I like new tech and I remember when people used to say that about power windows and door locks.

With that being said from what I’ve read in the boating forum I’m on as well as poking around the F150 forums the F150 is falling out of contention. I don’t have reliability concerns. By and large i didn’t find many Found On Road Dead instances. I’m sure a couple Tundras would have a major issue if they sold a million of them a year like th F150. My main issue is with fit and finish. Lots of complaints of rattling, wind noise poor fitment of various bits, rattling tailgate steps, and even uneven and or wavy exterior body panels. I don’t mind a quirk here or there but if I would have gotten an F150 it would have been a loaded out Lariat. There’s no way I would put up with those kinds of build quality issues on a $60k vehicle.

I had a 2014 Silverado I traded on my 2017 Tundra, I would of went with another Chevy but I needed the 3.42 rear-end and finding one that didn't shake was near impossible. Tundra Double cab also had the most room in the rear seating area and was comfortable then the other trucks I looked at. I have never owned a Ford so I cant speak to that truck at all and I didn't even bother looking at one, they do seem to have the most Tech though if your into that thing, I'm not. So some things I can point out for you on the Tundra,

Mpg- Yes its low on the sticker but its accurately rated, towing hauling, regular driving I get what they say I will get. My Silverado had to be absolutely perfect condition's to get what they said it could.

Towing- This truck is awesome, hauls loads very well and very stable at speed when towing. I always felt my Chevy was "light" feeling in the front while towing heavy

Fit and finish- Good here and they stay "tight" during there lifespan.

Comfortable- Personal opinion but this truck is very comfortable, I have been in it 9hrs at a time traveling and never have an issue.

Reliability- My truck has been great up until 21k when I encountered the Cam tower leak, other then that I had a gas cap replaced and the trailer brake TSB performed. No recalls.

Traded my Silverado at 24k and for comparison During that timeframe it had: 3recalls-2 airbag and 1 seatbelt, replaced driver side bottom seat cushion, transmission bellhousing bolts came loose causing a squeak, engine oil cooler hose due to leak at fitting.

The Tundra is a pretty good truck, I use mine for work and tow about 5 days a week and its been great. Little disappointed in the cam tower leak issue, hopefully she will be good from hear on out. Good luck in making your decision!

Last time I recycled my aluminum cans I got pretty good money for them. So a Ford is worth more when you scrap it.

Longer list than the wife needs to know about....
Resale residual value will be better on the Tundra. If you ever had to sell the truck Tundra will sell faster and for more money.

    1. ride quality and comfort - maybe personal preference but I thought the Tundra rode better than the '17 F150 I was cross-shopping... the Ford is very jittery
    2. the usual reliability / resale value / etc.
    3. some of Tundra's key deficiencies (no carplay/android, no 360 camera, no remote start, no bed light, no tailgate lock) can be partially, if not fully remedied through the aftermarket
    4. personal preference on how they look, especially modified
    5. real-world MPG is much closer to the Ecoboost than EPA numbers would lead you to believe

I think that the overall value, reliability and longevity of the Tundra speaks for itself. In the end, you're the one that has to sit in the driver's seat and foot the bill for a monthly payment, maintenance, fuel and increased insurance. Personally, I will take the increased HP and ground clearance of my Tundra over any of the big 3 (I'm not modded btw). I'm also probably one of only a few that doesn't mind the lack of tech in my Tundra. To each their own, but c'mon man, it's a pickup truck. Blind spot monitoring, 360 degree cameras, self parking, trailer maneuvering, adaptive cruise, WiFi, 18 different ways to listen to music and on and on. Most people should worry less about the tech in their vehicle and worry alot more about the fact that their driving ability just plainly sucks.

Exactly true.. Do you want to employ thousands of people who make up the assembly lines? or do you want to give some high managers more stock bonuses.

Car makers have to have supply an American Made Index to the government. It is supposed to take into account the country of origin for all the parts etc.. I remember reading the American Made Index for a truck one time that had just arrived at a dealer for prep. It was interesting..

For a long time it was the Ford F-150 that had the highest index, but that hasn't been true for more than a decade. The Tundra surpassed it long ago.. The Camry has had the highest American Made index for a very long time as well. Thats quite a feat considering all the car models available.

Simplicity and low tech is good for a pleasure vehicle, but I'm all for technology on a daily driver.

I had a new 13 Ford xlt and had so many issues with it. 3 batteries in 3 years, door keypad failed, wiper switch failed, ignition switch failed, seat passenger air bag sensor failed, brakes would grind when in reverse and stopping....the list goes on. I have never wanted a vehicle out of my possession as bad as that truck. They can keep there Mexico made parts...I’ll never own another one.

I'm with ya' brother! Tech is great but the more it's incorporated into vehicles the more basic driving skills suffer. I cut my teeth on old stick shift trucks, one was a column shift, high beam switches on the floor, no power steering, crank windows and push button radios. Most people today would be screwed. If you really want to see tech, drive a Tesla, everthing else will be a total disappointment.

My last Ford was around 1998 or so. I was young and bought a Ford Ranger. Total POS.
It had a vibration that they never could fix. They said it was the drive shaft. Changed it a couple times. Never got better. It was also right at the time of that whole tire fiasco.
I drove it to a dealership and tossed them the keys and told them to keep it. After quite a bit of BS for 6 months Ford took it back and erased my loan.
That was my last American vehicle.

    Then there is this.....

"The Toyota pickup should have no place on the modern battlefield. It’s seemingly the very opposite of a modern vehicle of war. It’s unarmored, unarmed in its original format, inexpensive and didn't originate from some billion-dollar development program run by Lockheed Martin.

And yet for those very reasons, the Toyota thrives on battlefields in poor countries. The civilian truck has struck an ideal balance between convenience, economic reality and the demands of local terrain."

Thanks I think I found a Tundra configured the way I like it. It looks like it has 170 miles from the dealership website so possibly more then that.

How many miles would you consider too many on a new vehicle?

To me that is to many. How did they get on the vehicle? I can’t imagine that many people test drive it.

Good question... 170 would be way too many for me, or else I'd be asking for some heavier discounts. Honestly, I'd be uncomfortable with anything above 20 miles :D. Mine had 1 mile on it and the only test drive was done by me.

Probably was a dealer trade where the sale ended up falling through, but it could possibly be from test drives. Sometimes dealers will try to do most of the test drives on one vehicle when they can help it.
