Putting a new furnace in and I've narrowed down to either a Trane or a Carrier. Trane is about $700 more, warranty is same, so it's basically $700 for a made in usa product. I will say the Trane also comes with a much nicer wifi/enabled thermostat so there is a little bit of the price. I also know the trane takes a generic air filter where the carrier requires a special filter running about $25 every 6 months.

Anyone have any thoughts between these two?

Neither. They are both rip offs on the total price. Check with a local heating and air conditioning place in your area. In 2004 I approached a carrier and a Trane dealer about adding an air conditioner to my existing system. Both Claimed that I needed a new system and both were around 8K. I made an inquiry with a local company not affiliated with Trane or Carrier and low and behold they could add the air conditioner on the existing system and only charged about $2,500.00

We replaced our 20+ year old furnace and A/C about 4 years with a Trane. We looked at Lennox & Trane and the prices were comparable. We ended up getting a better warranty with the Trane and have had no issues with it.

Wish you were local. My close friend owns his own business and is great at what he does. That said, Trane is fantastic! That’s what I have.

I had Trane installed when I built my house in 2016. In 2017 I experienced a vibrating sound in my wall and the condenser was louder than it should have been while running the AC. Everything was working as it should and the house was nice and cold, called the installer out which they tried everything they could to no avail. They called a Trane rep to come out and he authorized a new condenser. Hell of a lot quieter and the sound is gone. Needless to say I was impressed with the way Trane handled the warranty.

And my Trane gas furnace works so well, it will run you out of the house if you turn it above 68 degrees. I love gas heat.

Got a trane system in my house. It’s great. In my previous career I installed and serviced hvac systems. Carrier is a good brand but a pain to work on and some parts were hard to get.
I liked rheem and ruud systems. Reliable and easy to work on.
You won’t go wrong with either one, trane or carrier.

The Trane is a better choice over the carrier. Trane's thermostat's are definitely way better then carrier's

I have a Trane commercial RTU. It's six years old. Three service calls in 2015 at $1800.00. Twelve service calls (2017-18) 8 service calls (2016 -17) and $12,000.00 so far. It still isn't running. Never ever ever ever ever, will I deal with Trane again. Even the service tech admitted he install the last $1700.00 part incorrectly and ruined it. (their expense) It's hard to stop a Trane, if you can't get it started. Civil suit is pending. Customer service is the absolute worst.

Thanks for all the replies....it might be worse than buying a car. I now am down to 3 dealers and they all want to know what the estimates are from the other 2. Funny how the price has come down almost $1800 from the start for all of them.

You need to find a good dealer that has a good reputation with the manufacture and good reviews in your area. They all sale the same box per say. It is the install that will have a lot to do with long term life of the furnace. Air flow is a major factor along with expected use and sizing of the equipment

Texas heat is hard on AC. We had trane for years. When it was time for a change the installer said that Goodman had the best warranty in the business so that's What we did. Went from a 12 to 18 sere. Great experience and much lower energy cost, in fact 40% lower. Get the highest sere rating you can afford.

Decided to up grade whole home HVAC went ordered a Trane 18XLi. Natural gas is the way to go IMO if you have access to it.

If you want quality get a Buderus.
They are really nice. But they might only make boilers?

You could also look into getting a heat pump instead of furnace. Would be great for heat and AC. They can find and make heat at temps down to at least zero degrees these days.

Yes, a natural gas furnace is awesome. Only thing better is a ng water heater.

That first dealer was full of shit. The only time you should ever have to replace a whole system because of one component failing is if the system uses R-22 Freon. All newer systems use R410a so they have to replace the whole system.

Is that a heat pump or a straight-cool unit matched up with the gas furnace?

Trane XLi systems are the shit!

How old was the York? York used to make good stuff, back when they were owned by Borg-Warner.

Also, a lot of Carriers require a special thermostat, especially the high-end Infinity System. Even Trane's most expensive system will work with a Honeywell programmable thermostat...

OP, I'm going into the HVAC industry and I know a thing or two. Both Carrier and Trane are good, but I like the Trane XLi systems better than the Carrier Infinity System for numerous reasons.

When it comes to air-conditioners and heat pumps, Trane is the better choice. When it comes to lower-end furnaces, it's a matter of preference. When it comes to high-end furnaces with electronic everything and 2-stage or variable-speed blowers, Trane is better.

    @Pudge

Also, a heat pump matched up with a gas or oil furnace is great, but a standalone heat pump with electric backup heat operating when it's below freezing is a lot like a politician...

They both make a lot of noise but rarely work properly!

My parents' house has dual Goodman air-conditioners and gas furnaces. They were installed brand new when the house was built in 2015-2016 and have not given us any problems, but I would never install Goodman if it were up to me.

Our thermostats are just Honeywell programmable units installed by the builder.

Carrier is working pretty good for me. Buddy is owns his own company doing service and installs. I bought the units (outside a/c comp, inside gas furnace) and he installed 3 years ago and no problems yet. Win win. Stoked on the $aving$. Heard good things about Trane too.
