Positive and negative speaker wire

Can anyone tell me which wire on my driver side door speaker is positive and which is negative. I drive 2016 tundra double cab sr5 non jbl. Thanks!

In older times it did not matter which way speakers were hooked up. Not sure if things have changed. Would not think hooking up to see if works either way would hurt anything. If really concerned get a volt meter to check polarity. Good Luck

 

I always wondered if it mattered. I was always anal retentive and colorblind, so I would have to trace the wire all the way back to make sure I had it right. Mostly with those home stereo clear jacketed speaker wires.

 

It does matter. Bass hits harder when polarity is correct. It can distort when reversed.

Yes it does matter which way a speaker is wired. If you swap the +/- your speaker will be out of phase. It will be playing in to the door instead of in to the cab.

 

The earlier posted diagram doesn't match what's in my 2016 Non-JBL. This is an excerpt from the TIS data that matches my truck - Should be the same in yours... Purple is positive, Pink is Negative.

Sadly, no. And the manuals are broken into separate files that you have to save off one at a time. But, it's better than nothing.

 

Not to hijack the thread, but any chance you could provide the listing for speaker wire colors for the JBL system as well? I am about to do a full upgrade but use the factory wiring and I am lost. Thanks!, also in a 2016

Since i dont have anything to do at the moment i hope y'all dont mind me rambling for a bit...

Both sides of the cone actually do produce an equal amount of sound. They will be out of phase and when two sound waves of the same frequency meet, they will either cancel eachother out by about half of their output(out of phase), or amplify eachother by 6 decibel (in phase).

"Speaker Phasing" in this context/application basically means all the speakers that are producing the same frequency are moving outwards and inwards together (This doesnt take into account where the listener is positioned in relation to their distance from each speaker).

Speaker boxes are used for many reasons and one of their most important is to isolate the rear wave and the front wave of a speaker drive from eachother. So as you could imagine, with two door speakers playing the same material, notes, hurtz, frequency, ect.. But one of them was wired with the negative and positive reversed. It would be like only one speaker was playing. One speaker is creating a pressure wave (moving outward) while the other one actually decreases the pressure at the same time cause it moved inwards.

You can easily check your phasing a couple ways. Easiest is to simply adjust your balance all the way to either right or left. With your volume set at normal and some music playing gradually start bringing the balance back to center. As you start to near center the volume will noticable increase on its own if you're speakers are in phase with eachother. If it doesnt get louder and stays about the same then you need to switch the neg and pos on one of the speakers. Doesnt matter which one.

This next way works great if you are mid way into installing a new headunit and dont have a diagram handy. This isnt recommended for tweeters though. You also need to be able to see the speaker cone too.

Grab a tripple a or double a battery. Connect the two available wires to the speaker. Doesnt matter which one is neg or pos. Now from behind the head unit headunit find those two wires(assuming they havent already been crimped to the new harness that came with you radio) and press one wire to the negative end and with other wire tap it on the positive side of the bat. You will hear the speaker crackle if you have the correct wires. You will also notice the direction the speaker moves when you make contact with the battery pos. If it moves outward then the wire you are holding to the batteries negative side is that speakers negative. The one you touched to the positive side of the battery is the positive for the speaker.

If the cone moved inward instead, then your neg and pos are backwards.

Easy peezy, right? Right!.
