I would like to do what I consider a useful modification. For whatever reason Toyota only put two sensors in the front bumper, one at each corner. I want to mount two additional sensors evenly spaced in the center piece of the bumper. That way, in theory, the dash display would show you the distance to an object right in front of your truck, it should light up both front corner indicators, telling you how close you are.

My question is if that would work by just splicing the new center right sensor into the right corner sensor and do the same with the left side. The two sensors and respective retainers would be around $300.00 and the installation would only require to drill two holes into the plastic center bumper section. The wiring would be pretty easy as well. The big question is if the computer will play along or throw an error because it can't process the two additional sensors (due to increased resistance, etc.). I know I could get the FRAG harness but would prefer the above solution because it would always be active.

Anybody have an answer for that?

Don’t believe the will work, 1 the module is only set up for two sensors, 2 the instrument cluster isn’t set up for 4 sensors.

each sensor is wired individually to module so this wouldn't work properly if at all

I have to disagree.. .I'm quite sure there will be a way, it may be difficult or prohibitively expensive but when you see what people can do on this forum, parking sensors aren't rocket science.

Just because you don't know how, or can't imagine how, doesn't mean it can't be done

I don’t see why two sensors hooked up to one set of wires wouldn’t work. It would be worth a shot. Just get some needle tap connectors and some sensors from the junkyard and give it a go. It shouldn’t matter if they are individual as long as they are telling you you are too close to something.

I am undecided yet but may just temporarily remove two of my rear sensors because I am not sure if any sensor from the junk yard will work. Anyway, as far as the display, it should just light up both front corner indicators (with 4 sensors) if something is right in front of the truck.

TRD rear sway bar, console organizer, stubby antenna, LEDs for cabin, cargo, license plate, and reverse lights, power-fold mirrors, Westin nerf bars, full stereo upgrade. Future - color-match grill surround/bulge, mirror caps, handles, plasti-dip badges.
I am very confused as to why they didn't install front sensors in the factory. What is the point of having rear-center sensors when you have a backup camera? The centrally-mounted sensors would've made more sense up front. I was wonder why they weren't going off when I was parking front-first when I first got the truck.

So, did you give this a try? I am looking into the same thing for my 2014

The sensors are wired to a separate ECU specifically for the parking sonar system, and the different sensor positions are wired individually for the ECU to know which position is sending the signal. I would put money down that simply splicing two new sensors into the existing sensor wiring would not work. At best, you’ll get false readings showing the reading at the corners in your display (without knowing which sensor is actually reporting the distance). At worst, you’ll cause the whole system not to register or read anything at all on the front.

you might look into an aftermarket sonar system for just the extra two fronts.

or buy the front-and-rear anytime camera mod and install a front camera to give you visual guidance straight out in front.

Rainman, thanks for the info and I did take a look and downloaded the 2014 Tundra diagram.

Nice new 2021 Tundra! You have quite the list of mods. I took a quick look at your list and hopefully missed a super charger and big brake kit. The brake kit is easy and really helps slow that truck down. I know TRD isn't certifying the super charger but you can still get it down at a few places and adds about 125hp, really nice. I have chased down a WRX until we hit a turn.

Enjoy and thanks again for the diagrams, a lot of work done on those.

I am curious if those sensors are analog or digital.

Sorry - just saw this post. I’m on the fence on a SC. Adding boost and HP is just gonna entice me to get on it more, and creates long term wear and tear above the stock configuration. This is my daily driver, weekend truck, work truck, grocery hauler, and general go everywhere vehicle. I’ll rack up 25-30k miles a year on it (I was just shy of 300k on my 2008 when I traded it), so longevity and utility is paramount to me.

I’ve also seen a lot of mixed reviews on the usefulness and life expectancy of the big brakes, and not sure they fit with the BBS wheels (I was under the impression they required 20” wheels).

YEA! The SC will entice you to move a little faster and I have had the nose to compressor coupling go out at about 60k. Not a big deal if you are a DIY kind of guy. LOF every 5K and at 135K and running perfect. Actually got a little MPG boost as long as I stay off the gas, all of 12 to 13.

The brake kit does need 20 inch wheels but it does a great job of slowing that heavy truck. Again if you DIY, the pads are easy but if you need rotors, look at 350 each. Haven't found aftermarket duplicates yet. Really nice if you ever pull a trailer.
