Engine Bay Corrosion / Rust

New member here looking for advice. I've been wanting a 1st Gen Tundra, specifically a 2006 model for awhile. I've looked at a few in my area, some are local trades, and some are previously northerner owned. But it seems that no matter what the history, most of the components under the hood are corroded, or rusting. Such as the battery tie down, most of them are almost rusted away, the top of the engine is corroded and it looks like a white sand on it. Even running my finger across the top of the engine feels like my hand is in beach sand.

I realize the trucks i've looked at from up north are subject to a large amount of road salt & grime. And that usually is evident in other places on the vehicle.

One 06 Tundra in particular that is near me looks immaculate on the frame, body panels, interior, but....under the hood, its questionable.

It drove great and rides smooth, but the engine appearance had me worried.

Is this a common thing on the 1st gens?

Welcome from CO. It might be common in humid/ salted road climes. I'd keep looking. You will find the one you want.

 

The owner had service records in PA and SC. I checked it very thoroughly and everything appears to be in great shape.

 

You can clean up the engine bay. Takes some time but sounds worth it from what you noted about the overall condition of the truck. We have folks here who constantly spit shine everything under the hood and some who rarely lift the hood. I clean under the hood at least once a month or more if needed. I'd say go for it!!

 

What would be good to use to clean the engine components and fittings?

 

I use Armor-all cleaner myself.Liquid spray and wipes.
