Towing with a 2017/ 2018 crewmax 4x4

Looking at getting a new truck and I was wondering what people like or dislike about their rigs while towing. We have a 21' travel trailer and it weights 3200 lbs unloaded. I figure this truck should tow it just fine but are there some things that I should pay closer attention to on the toyota? I currently have a 2002 silverado 1500 that we have owned from day one and it has been our tow rig the whole time but with 295,000 miles its time for a new rig. Thanks for any advice and we cant wait for our new rig.

These trucks tow really well. Biggest issue most have is that the factory brake controller isn't responsive enough, make sure to test your truck before you head out for a trip.

I tow. 7500 lb travel trailer have about 7000 towing miles on my 16. It tows great, just change brake controller to a p3

I towed a 24 foot enclosed trailer fully overloaded fine 850 miles with no problem other than the factory brake controller. I would suggest tow mirrors.

 

Welcome! I have '17 dc 4x4 and tow a 22' tt with it. It tows great, no problems. Make sure your truck has the tow package and hit the tow/haul button.

 

Welcome from Arizona. It might sound silly but make sure that you buy a truck with the tow package.

 

How do I bypass the stock brake controller ? I have the prodigy p3 in my current truck and love it and that is what I will put in the new rig too.

 

Just for fun hit the Tow/Haul when not towing but be careful with the right foot. I tow a 22' bay boat that scales at 5000 lbs with gear and 1/2 tank of gas. No problems at all. Passed a big rig (no trailer) with ease on 2 lane road doing 70.

 

Gem of a Champion bay boat, wish they were still in business. Charger is making a couple of the Champ bass boats under the Charger name. I looked at the 210 Elite at a boat show, identical to the Champ.

Look into that for a clean way to mount your p3. I'm pretty sure you just disconnect the stock unit and connect up your p3 with the required harness. I haven't done it though so maybe someone who has will chime in.

 

I had the stock brake controller, just unplug it buy harness for p3 and just plug it in, I have the esp mount also looks good. Only thing after you take out factory one you will get error message on dash. No big deal you just disconnect neg battery cable and your good to go.

 

I traded my Tacoma, which towed my 21’ travel trailer and 20’ boat just fine, for the 2018 CM 4x4 Tundra. The Tundra tows like a dream. I have the TRD Off Road with tow package for a towing limit of 10,800lbs. It will certainly do the job.

 

I tow a dump trailer weekly. usually with around 8000lbs total on it. tows like a dream. when I push to 10-11k lbs I do feel a little bumpy when driving and usually drive a little slower at around 60-65 on the highways. I use the P3 brake controller and am really happy with it. would definitely recommend the P3 vs the toyota factory from what ive heard.

 

Tundra can pull that weight with ease, but will tend to run out of payload faster than other 1/2 tons. Don’t believe the payload numbers on the website/brochure...check the driver door panel of the truck you’re buying. I’ve got a 2017 SR5 Crewmax 4x4 and it’s payload is only 1260. Once you account for passenger weight, gear and hitch weight you can quickly find yourself over rating.
