Advice on year and features (not finding much available)

Friends,

I'm in the market for a 3rd Gen (not considering new right now) and am having trouble finding a truck with the features I'm looking for.

Is this a tough list to find / uncommon?
1) 38 gallon tank
2) double cab / 6.5' bed
3) 5.7L V8
4) 4x4
5) TRD package (not a "must have" but would be nice)
6) 2015 - 2016 perhaps?

I really don't want the crew max as I want to keep the longer bed but it sure does seem that the majority of trucks are configured as such (crew max that is).

Also, any disadvantages to the FFV engine? I plan on only running regular fuel but was curious as to whether there are disadvantages for this specific engine.

 

No issues with FFV engine. I have it but only run dino juice. Good luck in your search, bud.

You'll have to look at a 2016 or newer for a 38 gallon tank. What is your location?

 

Same here! I think too new, for what you are looking for. Even the 2 and 3 year leases havent been turned back in yet. Good luck with your search! Keep looking one will make an appearance for you to grab. Maybe visit local dealer and have them keep a look out for you.

 

Thanks for confirming that 2016 is when the 38 gallon tank became available - that will help further narrow my search. We live in VA now but I'll be purchasing in or around Dallas, TX.

 

Texas id truck country and the Tundra is built there so chances are you have more choices. What may limit you a little is the DC requirement since it appears that the CM is more popular (more at the dealer), you may want to consider to buy a left over new 2017. Below is a local example and I am sure they can be had cheaper.

Still a lot of 2017's with this list of options available in SoCal if you don't mind which color BUT most are new, not used. The depreciation is most felt the 1st couple of years after purchase, so owner's'd take a huge hit to sell one within the payoff period. Plus, owners are pretty satisfied with Tundras, so not much reason to sell one within the first few years. So maybe that's why you're not finding many used.

Edit: I may have misunderstood you. I think you mean you want to buy a used '16 or '17... but maybe you meant you want a 3rd gen and not whatever comes next?

If you want the 38 gal capacity - you will probably have to step up to the CM - most DC have the smaller tank, 2016 is minimum year for tank. Also if you search autotrader or any of the other websites, given those requirements above, you can filter by distance (you are willing to travel). If you are really wanting those features, look for those requirements in your filter and search 500 plus miles from home - you can be anywhere in the US for $150-300 one way ticket out of Dallas, then drive it home.

 

Your first guess was correct; I'm currently looking at used 2015-2016 range so long as I can fill all my requirements. 2015 might be out since that year is tough to find a 38 gallon tank.

I might end up looking at new / end of year type deals but right now I've got some time to shop and find what I'm looking for in the used market.

Thanks for the other link you provided about the FFV engine. I'm going to check it out now.

Thanks for the good advice - I think that unless I'm just over the top lucky I'll have a long drive to find one.

 

Woodguy65 - I think blue book is right around $30k so somewhere in that range depending on mileage and features.

 

Thanks for the link Hans - sadly that one is a 26 gallon tank which for me is a must have.

 

I didn't even look at the details. I just assumed it has the 5.7 and I am also assuming that all 5.7 trucks have the bigger tank (which really should be standard on all of them).

I still think you would be better off with a left over 2017 at 0.0% interest and a full warranty. Have you tried a local dealer and ask them to do a dealer search; that would be the easiest way and they know within a few minutes. I would even offer to pick it up myself if the distance isn't to far.

 

I agree about the tank. In fact, if it weren't for the optional larger tank that's available now I'd likely stick with a 1st Gen.

As far as purchasing new, I might end up doing so but right now I'm mainly trying to find a good used one. A couple of nice ones have popped up but the logistics are a bit tricky since we're moving soon.*

* My original plan is to sell my car here, drive the wife's sienna to our next house and then buy a truck there (Lawton, OK or DFW area). Purchasing a truck here would be tricky since I'd have to tow the van to avoid a painstaking convoy trip.

 

I was looking for the same truck you want before I bought mine. I went with new because I couldn't find one used for a good price. The 38 gallon gas tank option has nothing to do with cab and bed configuration. It gets added as part of the "SR5 upgrade package." This also adds the center console with bucket seats and floor shifter as opposed to the bench seat with the column shifter that come with the base SR5 package. What you are looking for is a very common configuration but also a very sought after configuration. Still shouldn't be too hard to find a 16 with those options. Good luck!

 

I have a 2018 that is exactly the same as your description except mine is a 4x2. I do have the SR5 Package which includes the 38 gallon tank in the window sticker description.

I just realized that I've forgotten about the Transferflow aftermarket tanks. This might give some added flexibility to my search.

 

That's true, kind of spendy but I hear they are worth it.

 

Me too, except 2017. Also on CA. In fact it was challenging finding all those features with 2WD; whereas 4x4's were (I think still are) plentiful.

I'll be interested to learn what you do, about the aftermarket gas tank. I think we cannot do this in CA , but I'd love it as an option for extended overlanding trips.
