Why do wheels and tires have to be balanced?

Tires are made up of internal beads, body plies and belts that are encased in rubber, assembled and cured. Alloy wheels are cast, cooled and machined. And even though both are built to tight tolerances, there is bound to be some unavoidable weight imbalances during the manufacturing process.

How many wheel weights are too many?

While there is no industry standard, the general consensus of what is too much weight is when it takes more than 1% of the assembly weight to bring it into balance.

Let's take a test example of one incident I recently encountered when a customer expressed concern that 15 wheel weights were used on his 19" BMW wheel and tire package. Is 15 weights too many? Let's find out.

• Each stick-on weight is a quarter of an ounce
• 15 weights on one wheel = 3.75 ounces
• 19x8.5 wheel weight = 27.5 pounds
• 235/35R19 tire = 24.0 pounds
• Total package weight = 51.5 pounds or 824 ounces
• 1% of that = 8.2 ounces

15 weights (3.75 ounces total) is very reasonable given the total weight of the wheel and tire in this example.

I should be well within 1%. These things are so F'n heavy I don't know how I will ever change a flat.

Get those wheels rebalanced

 

How much does each wheel/tire weigh? Mine weigh in at 95lbs. That tire is massive!!!

Try loading and unloading all 4 wheels into the bed twice. Can you say hernia?

 

It’s prolly needed for those tires. Not all tires balance easily.

 

I don't have the energy to weigh one right now. The tires are spec'd at 79lbs, I don't remember what SCS said the wheels are. They have to be over 100lbs.

 

I unloaded those 2 yesterday. I'm dreading having to load them back in tomorrow.

 

I only got two of them mounted and balanced, so that they can be used for fit check when I get the CMC done. They will be remounted and balanced when the TPMS get's swapped over. Maybe the TPMS will help the weight situation.

 

I believe the scs are 29lbs. So 108lbs + valve stem + weights + air lol.

Yeah, your right about "pushing buttons", thing. All we are doing is asking the important questions that they don't have answers for. I am pretty sure you know more than those knuckle heads! And what do expect, its put on by 4 Wheel Parts....

 

I would also request "black" weights. What are thinking, you wanted some bling on there... OR is that just me and my OCD?

All big tires balance pretty bad. Some ppl get lucky and some don’t. I have quite a few weights on mine.

 

I didn't know that was a thing, but I will absolutely ask when I go back.

True, but the two days a year when it is clean it will matter.

 

Yea, but that’s a ton of Weights. When I was with Toyo I always got surprised how few weights I’d see going on tires and some taking a bunch but never that many. I’ve probably sat and watched 1,000+ tires get balanced

Any other Tundra guys traveling on Highway 20 in Mendocino and Lake counties. I am over in Fort Bragg and saw several Tundras along the way, more than I have seen in the last month.
