Which oil filters to use?

just purchased 2013 4.6L V8 tundra trd offroad SR5 Had about 1-1/2 months great truck, love driving .Looking at oil change , wow what a difference. Need info on filter numbers, and amount of oil. Seen guys saying Toyota filters on e-bay by the case , but are they putting in stock Toyota , or TRD filters with metal frame on ends ? Quite a difference in price. Thanks for any advice.

 

I use OEM oil filter as for that 4.6 not sure on part number I'm sure someone on here will chime in and assist or call dealership with your VIN #...also if you want a no mess oil change look up the fumoto valve I put mine on couple oil changes ago love it!!!

 

the 4.6L is the displacement mines 4.6L V8 not 5.7L, as far as the manual goes , its a 2007 year manual, some how the dealer I bought it from said it came with it . Most everything in it seems the same ,are they that close over 6 yrs. As for filters , no one uses the TRD filter?

 

I believe someone on here has used before not sure who though

 

Off the top of my head... the TRD filter is PTR43-00081. The standard OEM Toyota filter is

$29 04152-YZZA4 Replaceable Oil Filter Element 1/2 Case (QTY 5)

04152-YZZA4. They're the same for 4.6 and 5.7, oil capacity is 7.9 quarts with the filter change. The book says 7.9, some guys say 8.5 and i read one post where someone said 9.1. I use 8 quarts of Toyota 0W20 and the level on the dipstick is right where it should be. I used one TRD oil filter and honestly didn't notice any difference or benefit, however my truck is a flex fuel so I change my oil every 5000 miles. For someone going 10,000 between changes the TRD filter may be more beneficial. For me it only amounted to any extra $5 for a filter.

 

Also, make sure to change the aluminum crush washer on the oil pan drain plug. If you get your oil and filter from a dealer they'll usually give you one. If not, they can be ordered on Amazon or eBay.

 

thanks ,I think I'm gonna go with the trd filter, I heard if you run the regular filter they can come apart if run to long . And I'm looking at 5w20 mobile1 . Also I've read about the fumoto valves and I just can't bring myself to trust it. To simple to not leak or get hit.

 

I use WIX oil filters. I have not see them mentioned on Forum.

Years back I read an unbiased study on oil filters. They did a dissection of many name brand filters and commented on quality; pleats, check valves, construction etc. I recall many of them were speculated to be the same just rebranded, and the famous orange one being of the lowest quality. WIX was rated at the top. I find them in the $8-10 at local parts stores. When in hand they actually feel like they are quality.

12-15 years later there may be more quality oil filters out there, just have not seen a more recent study.
