There used to be a website that you could read people experiences at different hotels if it worked or not. I'd try it with a $50.

As long as the hotel isn't completely booked, they can usually upgrade to a bigger room. I've gotten a bigger room a couple of times. The best was a free breakfast buffet for the family, but that wasn't in Vegas. The breakfast alone was like $80 a pop and got that for 2 days. One time I got a "Oh, thank you very much". I wanted to ask for the money back. :( I think $50 is too risky. I always throw them a 20.

Worked for me at Bellagio. $40 or 60 I think. My buddy was checking in beside me telling them we would like our rooms to be close, without a sandwich, they could not help him, then he offered as well, all of a sudden an upgrade became available. ;)

Also tell them its your first time there and her birthday, may open another door. They want you to come back. They are not supposed to take without some sort of perk; better room, better view, chamber maid, etc. As mentioned, depends on how booked up they are as to what can be offered.

We stayed at Paris a few years ago. It was part of a company trip that several of my coworkers were on. When we were checking in, they ask for ID and a credit card for incidentals.
I had a twenty folded up and put it between my ID and credit card. I told her it was our first time here, and it would be nice to get a great room. She left the twenty on the counter, and said “let me see if we have anything available before I take that”. That tells you it’s pretty common and accepted.

She moved us to a big corner room with windows overlooking the Bellagio fountains. All the other guys got the cheapest rooms in the back.

So, yeah, it worked like a charm for me.

Worked for me when we went last year and stayed at the Vdara. I just slipped a $20 and they gave us a bigger room with a much better view.

I do this all the time in Vegas. I'm there 4-6 times a year playing poker. Just make sure you know what type of rooms they offer. Typically they'll ask what you had in mind.

Ask them if they have any complimentary upgrades available as you pass them your money/ID.

Buy your drinks at the local CVS or Costco. Stay away from hotel bars. It will save you money.

The Mrs and I, plus the inlaws, we're in Reno for New Year's Eve 1989.

We forgot to make a dinner reservation so I was running all over trying to find something. Nothing, nothing, nothing. Finally landed in some swanky steak house and slipped the maître d a couple of twenties.

As he was erasing some poor saps name from the reservation book I handed him my pen.
