many, if not all of us have lost someone that we are close to. Either family, friends or even a neighbor. But what had happened today in S.FL is a nightmare for many families, a nightmare that no movie, song, or story could make anyone of us feel. It’s horrible thinking that anyone has to go through what the families of the victims in parkland are enduring tonight and will endure the rest of their lives.

I pray to god that my family will never have to experience this and I pray for all your families as well.

Please be safe and strong for each other!

I cannot even imagine what those families are having to deal with.

I think the biggest problem is and this is my opinion only!!! The biggest thing is, parents aren't parents anymore, they think if they give the kid everything they want, everything is good, except the one thing every kids really wants, attention and to feel they are loved and important. So many parents now days, give them a $800 phone and they go to their rooms and parents are not involved in their lives. Out of sight out of mind. It's truly sad. My wife and 2 boys still sit at the kitchen table and eat supper every night, no tv, no phones and we talk about each other's day and what's going on in our boys lives at school.

PARENTS HAVE TO STAY IN TOUCH!!!!!

Also, neither of my boys have any social media accounts. I've got a freshman in high school and a 4th grader. I told them, when they move out of my house, they can have that crap if they so choose.

My heart goes out to the families and kids affected by this. I have 3 children and my wife works in the school system. We as a society and nation have to do a better job protecting our kids. And it first starts with teaching our kids right from wrong. There are many reasons why this stuff is happening more today than 20 or 30 years ago. One of the reasons is that our nation eschews friendly debates and compromise for name calling and denigrating the other side. It teaches our kids that bullying and ostracizing someone is okay. And if the kid that feels ostracized does not have a stable family life or support system, they act out. Sometimes they do harm to themselves, sometimes to others.

I'm not excusing the young man for what he did. Clearly, he needs to be held accountable for his act of violence. However, instead of turning this into a debate about guns, which has proven to be completely ineffective, we should be talking about how our society has become less tolerant and creates an environment where conflicts are fueled instead of resolved. We all have different jobs, but we all practice the art of compromise in our jobs. We have to in order to make a sale, please a customer or our bosses, and work together to achieve something. But when it comes to the "hot topic" issues, we exercise zero tolerance and condemn the other side so readily.

It was difficult explaining this to my young kids this morning. They hear about this type of violence and don't understand why anyone would do that. Difficult because I don't understand why either.

    That you know of...

One of my BILs said the same thing. Yep, his daughters had multiple accounts on several social media sites. Different email, different name, birthdate...done. They just didn’t use the home internet or their phones. It was a fluke that he found out.

Social media is such a big thing now. I totally get why you want to shield your kids from it. Not totally sure how I’m going to handle this in a couple years.

Parenting Or the lack of has has definitely changed over the last 20-25 years. Electronics have been injected into almost every aspect of our personal lives. Unfortunately it consumes way too much of people's lives, IMO. Toddlers are entertained/consumed by devices as soon as they can hold them, parents are on their devices practically ignoring their children. Guess what they are teaching their children? I could rant on and on.......

It looks like this young man had some other issues; Father dying several years ago and Mother more recently. I am sure the lack of parenting or a father figure contributed. It also appears there were signs that he was not stable and it had been reported to authorities.

Prayers to all that are affected.

your on the right track because what you talk about is leading to this parents aren't guiding their children in the right direction and they are being guided by others that lead to a bad direction that always results in mass murder

Times like this I just feel I need to quit my job and volunteer M-F at my daughters school, all day. Nobody will cause her, or any others harm if I can prevent it.

When I took my CCW class in Colorado 90% were female teachers from private schools being paid to go by the school as security officers. Not sure what kind of bankroll you have but there is that option.

Problem with this, and other things, is that we copy what we see. Several have made the comment that this didn’t happen when we were growing up. No, they didn’t.
That said, all it takes is once. Used to, people like this would end up in jail, or killing themselves in a basement somewhere. Now, once they’ve seen the news about so and so taking out a bunch of people, they get the idea that they’ll just take as many with them as they can. They figure they’ll punish society for whatever harm they feel has been done to them.
Ultimately, once something happens, it’s going to happen again. It just takes the first person to set the example.
It’s similar to the influx of serial killers in the 60’s and 70’s. People with this mindset glorify this kind of thing in their minds, and make the decision to emulate it.
It’s just how people are. Kids model fashion on celebrities, bands emulate the stuff that appeals to them, psychopaths copy other psychopaths.

It’s not a “What is this world coming to” thing. The world is actually safer than it has ever been in history. Humans have always been shitty. This is just the newest version of what shitty people do to each other.
Access to information is part of it. Before information was so immediately available, we didn’t hear about every single bad thing that happened in the world. It created more of an illusion of safety, which tends to give us all a rose colored view of the past. It wasn’t safer and better, we just didn’t know it.

I agree. Access to information is a huge part of it. 20 years ago, we were comparatively blissfully ignorant to the carnage throughout the world. While the internet is an awesome thing for the most part and it empowers us to live great lives through it's ability to help us communicate, it also empowers the lowest common denominator. On the other hand though, it also desensitizes us to the world, we consume so many atrocities and violence throughout the world that we no longer react unless it manifests itself in our collective "backyard" and is disproportionately violent.

But back to the point... it saddens me that we can't stop incidents like this from happening... as a new father, i can't begin to comprehend what these families are suffering through today. I'm tired and dismayed at the polarization of the world, we need to get people to figure out how to reduce/stop these incidents. If our reaction to this is to look to someone else and blame them, we're part of the problem. We should be asking what can I do?

This kind of stuff makes my heart hurt and pisses me off all at the same time! I'm fortunate that my daughter is long out of school but still worry about my nieces and nephews and the worry gets more and more reinforced when something like this happens. Something for you parents to consider.... when kids are in my care, they're safe. Period. Our kids are required by law to attend school, that our tax dollars help to fund and therefore have every right to feel safe when in the schools care. Our schools need to recognize that they're responsible for our kids safety. I've been in contact with my state reps, city council and school board people numerous times and have demanded that something be done. Specifically that fire needs to be fought with fire and every school needs armed security. If every high school in my area can afford to put in new football fields at several hundred thousand dollars, every school in my area can afford to hire a few off duty or retired LEO's to ensure the safety of the students. I have called, e-mailed and attended meetings and I will continue to do so, pushing this until someone finally gets it. I know others have suggested this as well and yet our school boards and city governments brush it aside and bury their heads in the sand in the hopes that they won't ever have to deal with a tragedy like this. If you agree, contact your state and city representatives, attend city council and school board meetings. Demand that your childs safety be as paramount as their education. Every town has trained, experienced LEO's, firefighters, first responders, active and retired and even veterans who would fit the bill perfectly. My suggestion has been that a few plain clothed, armed officers, discreetly patroling during school hours could make all the difference. I have also made it a point to remind people that this isn't a "gun" thing, it's a safety and security thing. Also, that I'm not going away. If the social security office can have an armed security guard, there is absolutely no reason why our schools can't.
