I don't want to run tow/haul all the time but would like a throttle response map somewhere between stock and tow/haul. Anyone have a simple solution for this? I'm a bit wary of tuners but would consider spending the money if all that was done was throttle sensitivity and maybe reduce nannies a bit.

You can choose not to use the tune on bully dog but change the throttle sensitivity and shift points. They are all done independently. I believe the throttle has 4 settings to choose from including stock.

which bully dog? I see two on the website.

if you change throttle response can you leave shift points alone?

    thanks for the info.

The bdx is cheaper and has all the options. Yes they can be set independently. Also get it from @dirtydeeds he gots you when it comes to BD.

A BD is on my list as well as soon as they have tunes for the 2018. I am like the OP, just want a little better response (T/H is to jumpy for me) and if their 87 tune or Economy tune improves MPG, even a little I'll take that as a bonus. And no, I don't want a Pedal Commander.

I'll read up on the Bully Dog. Really don't want a third party trying to get better MPG out of my truck. I'm fairly confident the factory makes that a pretty big priority and if there were any significant gains to be had they'd have done it. also don't want higher shift points.

    Thanks for the responses.

That looks to be a similar product to the Pedal Commander and I don't think it addresses torque management.

Ya, I'm with you. The throttle response is a little slow or delayed. I just fill it with premium now. It picks up quicker, smoother, and harder on the wallet. It's definitely between factory and haul/tow. Cheaper alternative to the mods mention above.

Bully dog is adjustable to whatever parameters you want or don’t want. From my understanding you could use the preloaded tunes or pick and choose what you want out of it. If you don’t want torque management adjusted you don’t have to. If all you want is to adjust the throttle response you can. Kind of a lot to pay for if all you want is the one option. But it does also read codes and clear them as well as adjust other silly things. If you don’t like the seatbelt chimes you can turn them off etc.

Other than what others have suggested like the pedal commander these are your only options that I’m aware of. You could try and see if the dealer can adjust this or get a techstream. But I’m not too sure on those.

does the bully dog stay plugged in?

would love to disable the seatbelt chime. suppose it wouldn't be terrible to ease up torque management....

Pretty sure the GT tuner stays plugged in and you can use it as extra gauges. The BDX just pluggs in while you load the tune and then you remove it. I ordered the BDX. It’s being shipped to my in-laws house in Vegas because I can’t receive it in California. “I will only be using it for off-road or when I’m out of state”. ;)

How does premium fuel make a difference on an engine designed to run on 87 octane?

There is a difference but don't take my word for it. Just fill up a tank and find out for yourself.

Not at 60 cents difference per gallon. I wait until BD comes out with the software for the 2018's.

But you need to run premium if you want the full experience of the tune.

You are correct if you after performance. To me the truck makes enough power as is, I would like to be able to alter throttle response and torque management though. A 87 or tow tune is all I need. I had tuners on all my Dodge Cummins trucks and always had the on the lowest setting and still had better overall drivability. On one of them I had a Smarty which is adjustable from +40 to +150 HP, never even went passed the first level.

I don't understand that logic that someone don't want to spend a few dollars but will willingly spend a few hundred for a minor gain in performance. If you're not even utilizing the full potential of your truck why even make performance upgrades? Doesn't make sense to have a 1000+hp twin turbo V8 when you only drive it on the weekend around the block (<---I'm exaggerating here a little!).

Don't take anything I say too serious. It's your money!

I have seen no improvement in MPG's running a conservative tune (Power level = regular, Shift points = stock, Throttle Sens = economy). Throttle sensitivity, at least for a stop, is much nicer now. Not so twitchy.

I don't think it needs to stay plugged in. It loads the "tune" to the ECU so there shouldn't be any requirement to leave it plugged in. I'll disconnect mine for the ride home today and let you know. Also, no seat belt chime is very nice.

I am not after performance gains, just want to have a little bit better response, something in between stock and T/H that's all. Is the same with lift kits and bigger tires....how many really take advantage of that and go off-roading. I venture to say a very small number, I see many lifted trucks around here and most if not all are as clean as a whistle, even underneath. I guess to each their own, I know that I piss away a lot of money on toys and don't really need any of that stuff.

Your dealer should be able to get rid of the seatbelt chime. Mine said he would. I told him I woudn’t Sign the paperwork until it was gone.

Unplugged the BD and tossed it in the console for the ride home. No issues.

Missed having actual trans and coolant temp readouts though.

I have plenty of throttle response. It’s not a Tacoma.
