For all y'all out there finding these shoddy, no customer service giving stealerships I hope y'all are blowing their feedback up with negative accounts of what happened, leaving bad reviews on Google/Yelp, etc. Let everybody out there know these dealerships do not want our business!

Well very glad to here Toyota is helpin out and covering some of these. I have done alot of these at my dealership, im the only one that does them. And Toyota has covered all but 2 of them, in/and well out of warranty. the only 2 they didnt cover were about 175-200k and have never been back to a Dealer since it was bought.

First yes it is a known issue, but in the amount I have done compared to tundras we see on a daily basis is no comparison. The issue is how the sealant was applied at the factory. I had a theory on if dealing with type of oil being used I only used the bottled Toyota 0w-20 on mine. 40k no leaks. We thought we had it taken care of, i didnt see or do any on 15-16 tundras, but i have heard of 3 in my region that reported it leaking on 17. It really is hit or miss on which ones leaks.

Some have mentioned the sealant color around the housing gray coloring is what was used at the factory, but some 15 newer have a darker gray color almost black but not quite. The dark black sealant is the Toyota FIPG used when they are re-sealed, When they are resealed as long as they were cleaned properly and applied evenly they should never be an issue again.

Now the actual repair is time consuming and meticulous, yes the main part is the FIPG but when i'm in there i like to replace all the o-ring & seals it just makes since, why risk compromising the repair over a $4 o ring.

Below are some pics of the repair both in truck and out of truck(if the rear main or crank case are leaking as well)

    good info @trdlife ... thanks!
I wanted to post this several days ago but never logged in ... I thought my 2016 has black sealant because compared to my friend and co-worker's trucks it looked black. Their trucks have a light grey sealant. when doing a balance with the tire out, I was able to take a closer look. long story short, I asked one of the guys doing the balance and he said they are black, another tech got curious as to what we were doing and got involved and with a flashlight he said one side is black and one side looks like dark grey ... both side have about 1-2 mm dried out (dripped) sealant but on one side near the edge there is a bigger chunk of sealant (2-3mm?) and that piece looks like a dark grey ... @TheBeast was right about factory sealant being grey! I was comparing mine to my friend's light grey. so we now know there is grey, dark grey and black sealants ... lol

Does this cause any issue other than a little weeping oil? I have a '10 with 42k miles and it is leaking a little, I doubt Toyota will do anything for me in terms of warrantee repair.

No not really unless you just totally neglect it and dont ever check the oil. I tell customers to use some brake clean and spray off the thru the wheel well area, all the oil residue you see, and then just watch every oil change or so.

I agree with @SR5TRDTUNDRA , it's worth a phone call to see if Toyota is willing to take care of all or some of it. You have a Truck that's 8 years old and only has 42 on the clock, that thing should last forever if it's taken care of.

I’m pretty sure my sealant is the light gray, and I’m in a 2014. I haven’t noticed any smells or leaks. But I can’t really tell and don’t know enough about engines to know what I’m really looking at. Plus I can’t keep the truck clean until April likely because of the road salt.

But to clarify: light gray sealant is the culprit - but it’s not all vehicles, but I should have noticed something by or about 60k miles. (I’m at 63k now.

My 2010 with 67000 miles on it is at the dealership right now getting repaired. I called and Toyota worked out a deal with the dealership to lower the cost. Give them a call you won't know if you don't call.

I took it to the dealership to confirm it was the cam tower leaking. They of course said out of warranty. I then called Toyota corporate.

Screenshot_20180211-173824.jpg Looks like I can join the party on this to now, rorating tires today noticed passenger side rear tower seal is starting to leak. Nothing major yet but enough for it to grime up and leave oil residue. Do these seals continue to get worse once they start to seep? Don't know how i feel about having the top end tore down to fix. I'm a 2017 and at 21,700miles.

yep that's it and usually shows up at about your mileage. Just go to a big dealership that has done it before.
My truck felt exactly the same after I picked it up.
Take care of it since it's under warranty. You could also wait a bit more and get it done when you are close to the end of your warranty but make sure to monitor the leak.

In the pic it doesn't look like there's anything there, so it could be a hard sell to a dealer that you want/need it fixed. Certainly go in and have it looked at so it's at least documented that eyes were on it. Will it get worse? Only time will tell. At one point in their lives, none of the trucks leaked, then eventually some have, and some haven't. Time....

and if they agree on one side, make sure they do both so you don't have to come back when the other side leaks.

Its pretty gunked up in that pic, its the area that's behind the raised portion of the heatshield there towards the back. I always make it a point to look for signs of this anytime I work on my truck, my last oil change at 15k it wasn't there and now at 21k its there so it reared its ugly head pretty quickly. This is such a bummer had my fingers crossed I wouldn't of had this issue, Toyota does a lot of things well but boy do they suck at fixing consistent issues. This has been going on for a long time now, it shouldn't be an issue for any Tundra.

Oh, sure, I can see what you're indicating now. In most of the pics that I've looked at, it's that tab with the hole that you have circled that is gunked up and/or has a droplet of oil on it's edge.

Yeah the tower seal is the area under that tab with the hole, pretty black and gunked up in there now. The area with the tap and hole would be the valve cover seal.

Mine is a '16. 31,700 miles on it. I just hit the remote start and it blew grey smoke. Tell me what I need to know friends. I plan on taking this truck to the grave. I only put about 10k a year on it, mostly local driving short trips. It sees the dealer for regular maintenance every 5k miles and is maintained to the hilt. I use Shell V Power in it and Amoco Ultimate when that is not in the area. Thanks: D

That sounds like an FFV update needed- not a cam tower leak.

Great post and great information that the dealers do not want to talk about. I just bought a 2017 Tundra Ted off-road crew this summer, awesome truck and love everything about it! I am very particular about my vehicles and inspect the engine and underside frequently ( my OCD I guess). Last week I noticed a "wet" seal on the passenger tower cam and got residual oil when I touched the "tower cam tab" that others have depicted in their posts... Being very concerned and seeing this post as well as only having 8000 miles on the odometer I took it in to the dealership. One note... ( I live in the northeast and had the underside fluid filmed after I purchased the truck. ). After looking at it, the master tech and service manager of the deal ship said it was just road spray and undercoating that got up on the motor. I call BS since the undercoating was done 6 months ago and residual had burned off after the first few hundred miles. Also the tower cam was the only seal that is "wet" so if their theory were true then the whole are would have thus residue. They guarantee that it will dry up after road conditions clear up.. I am giving them the benefi of a doubt so We will see. I am also very concerned at having the top end of a new engine torn apart at 8000 miles although others that have had it done claim to have not had any issues. Has anyone had one weep and then seal itself. Trying to be optimistic since I love the truck however, if I wanted a new truck with a leaky engine I would have bought a Ford. Sorry for the rant just very disappointed in Toyota..
