First long trip

This was my first long trip. With small hill cimbs and avg speed of 60. On just flat highway I got as high as 21.7

 

that's better than my best on long trips BUT I can't keep it at 60.

 

I averaged 10.8 doing “80” through South Dakota this past weekend. The 40 MPH wind gusts didn’t help.

 

Trust me going 60 was a damn long ride. But I just wanted to see what I can achieve on the highway, highest was exactly 22 mpg when their was no hills to climb. This is the 4.6 V8 not the 5.7. So I am fairly impressed on the mpg for how heavy the truck is and a 6 speed transmission

 

I am glad I m not the only one who gets 10.8 MPG.

 

here are the stats for when we drove from ND to SD to go pick up a GSP puppy, about 500 miles 1-way. started morning of the 15th and spent the nite and drove back the 16th. 75mph in ND and 80mph in SD. would only go until 1/2 tank for refills.

edit: the 6.9 mpg is when the temps dipped into the negatives and remote starting the truck a lot by the wife.

 

I get 10.2 average driving socal city BS! All streets. 15-18 hwy doing 70-85 mph. My truck eats dinosaurs for breakfast lunch and dinner.

 

60ish seems to be the sweet spot for higher gas mileage. I rarely see this because my highway driving is usually 80+ and around 15MPG

 

Heres mine, as been stated many times before it's a beefy V8 and I only run 93. If I wanted fuel mileage I would of bought a Prius.

I have the 5.7L engine and usually get mid 18s on the Interstate with the radar cruise set to 70 (obviously the speed varies a little bit), on secondary roads (speed limit 60) I get just shy of 20 MPGs. My current tank shows 15.7 over the last 400 miles, 140 miles was secondary roads the remainder 10-20 mile trips and letting the truck warm up 4 or 5 times to thaw the ice on the windshield. Not to bad overall for a big, heavy truck.
I have 4500 miles on it now and my MPGs have been consistent, its all in your right foot.

 

as noted above, its a-car but its tied to your fuelly account.

it backs up to fuelly com daily or when you input an entry.

 

forgot to add, the entry dates are kinda misleading, since a-car didn't integrate backups with fuelly until last October (I think). the really odd one is the tundra, I added it to my vehicle list prior to October but we didn't actually purchase it until late November-2017. we had committed to swapping the Tacoma for a tundra, just took a few months to find the one we wanted and find a dealer we could work with.

prior to intergration, a-car only had local backups that you could export and upload to your google drive or what not.

this is the paid version, not the free one.

 

aCar has been bought by Fuelly and changed their pricing model. Us old aCar PRO users paid for the app but Fuelly now wants us to pay AGAIN YEARLY to use the app without ads. I have found two apps that imports aCar records directly without you having to manipulate csv files.

Both seem to do similar things. I just like the UI of Simply Auto better.

I have the 5.7, just picked it up last month. On a long drive a couple weeks ago I had the tank average up to 18.6 mpg. I know I could have had it over 19 mpg had I kept going. I consider that quite good considering my Tacoma was averaging 18; on a similar trip I'd expect it would have been 19.5-20 tops (I keep a spreadsheet and record every single fill up).

 

meh its cheap for the use I get out of it. $5 a yr and I keep track of 2 current vehicles with history on about 5 total.

that comes out to roughly 42 cents a month if you pick a year plan or ignore the ads. I mean I only use it once a week so I can suffer looking at an ad

 

I could never sit at 60mph on a long trip. What a waste of time. I bought a 40k truck, a few dollars in gas is not worth my time.

 

Depends on the type of road we're talking about. 60 could be a decent pace on a lot of two-lane state roads around here.

 

I am always doing 80+ highway mixed with city driving and therefore suffer the typical 12 to 15 MPG average. I did however do a 3,000 mile road trip a couple months ago where we did back roads at 60 to 65 MPH and got a nice consistent 20 to 21 MPG.

 

Typically when I try to get good mileage it throws me the finger!

For a long road trip? Where? East of the Mississippi, there is quite a vast network of faster routes, state roads or interstates, no matter where you are going or coming from. Out west, even if you are off the main interstates the speed limits are usually 70 or even 80. Not arguing there are not roads where 60 is a good pace but I can't see that for a long road trip. Maybe if you are driving through curvy mountain roads the whole time.

 

Depends on what you're calling a long trip. This weekend I'll be driving about 200 miles, and a whole lot of it will be on 2-lane roads with 55mph speed limits, and that's the fastest and most direct route.

 

My recent trip was 3,000 miles. FL, GA, NC, TN, VA, MD, DE, then back through MD, NC, SC, GA and FL. I could have been on a highway the whole trip, doing 80 like we usually do, but this time we specifically wanted to take the back roads to see all the scenery we always miss when we fly by at 80 MPH at night. Except for the first stretch to Atlanta I hardly saw any highways util the way back starting in NC. Steady 60 MPH or so average, with 21 MPGs. (about 2,000 of the 3,000 miles)
(That is the only 2,000 miles of my 15,000 total to date where I was able to get that!, but the trip was specifically planned to be slow sightseeing)

 

Im lucky to get 17.5 on the highway. I drive near/right above speed limits and use the cruise control(adaptive) most of the time. Wonder why im so low..

Funny thing is, i get 15.5-15.8 in the city pretty consistently, i figured my highway driving would be alot higher

I could certainly be wrong, but I would bet an experienced driver with fuel mileage in mind can potentially do better than the adaptive cruise for that purpose. I've never used the adaptive cruise and kind of doubt I ever will, but you can see things farther ahead than the computer can.

 

Well this thread makes me have hope!
