So running into two issues on the new truck. First is the features placard says heated mirrors. The side mirrors have the defrost symbol on them. I can't find a button in cab so figure automatic or tied to the main window defrost.

Whichever it is the don't defrost? An i missing something? It's a 15 sr5. DC.

Next more important one is I've had issues getting into 4hi. Previous, got it on my 3rd attempt. Today i gave up after eight. I tried it from parked where i was, then tried it after having out of drive way, again after going forward. Then a couple times going back and forward to try and unwind it out whatever. Drive down the block and tried at stop sign. No go.

Drive to work 40 miles away, get in parking lot and try it fit fun. Guess in on first try.....

Need to be in neutral to swap it from 2 hi to 4 hi. As far as your defrost on your mirrors, comes on when your set to defrost for the windshield.

I was in neutral too for some attempts. On the 15 i swore it said in park in manual.

Likewise with the mirror i had the defroster on all the way to work and side mirror Frost never melted.

On my 15 limited there is a button on the climate controls for the mirror heat. Four wheel drive you should be able to put it in while moving at any reasonable speed.

Sounds like i should try moving reading elsewhere. Guess i still had the older advice of doing stopped as moving harsher on it.

I don't have a limited. My center console doesn't look like that.

Not correct. You need to be moving for it to engage into 4H. It also disengages faster if you are moving.

I stand corrected. Every time I've engaged 4H was in neutral.

    This.

I also "excercise" the acuator by placing it in 4hi on a straight road for at least 10 miles a month.
I also use 4L on a small portion once a month.

Use the defrost button to the right that (as pictured a few posts above) and that'll do the mirrors and rear window.

On an sr5 you should have a mirror defrost button...i do. Look under your screen where it says TUNDRA. It is the 3rd button on the right.

On an SR5, this button is for the rear glass and the side mirrors.

@Fitz19d. You should have a button under the stereo that has the same symbol as what is on the mirrors just like @MotoTundra shows above. It doesn't get very hot and may take time to get to temp and melt frost.

You don't need to be parked or in neutral to switch to 4x4. Most of the time you need to move forward for it to engage. You can be driving down the road and switch to 4x4 as well. I wouldn't suggest doing it at highway speeds but back road speeds is fine.

My 4wd seems to engage disengage quickest while moving but kind of coasting. If you are hard on the gas it won't engage as fast.
Always good to exercise it like @Sean266 said. I didn't with my Tacoma and getting in and out of 4LO was tricky until I started doing it more often.

4Hi while driving up to 45mph I believe, 4low u have to be stopped in neutral.

Alright, kinda odd story. With a description of where it should be and photo from someone. Figured it out. When I bought this used I was shown a console button button blank that was controlling an accessory power line they said I could wire to something. Think previous person had it for a labtop or something? Unsure. But I just figured it used a blank button I'm used to seeing on non top trim models of other vehicles. While digging around in glove box seeing if I was missing anything I found I guess the original button itself with the defrost symbol. Guy gave up using mirror defrost to have a clean power button/supply for something? Doesn't make sense to me, but that's best I've figured. Will be getting someone I know who knows the wiring to check to see if the mirrors completely disconnected or if they work when turning the power on/off with this button? (Since I figured this out havn't hide frost to test on.)

I've engaged and dis-engaged from 4HI to 2HI at speeds over 70mph when needed with no problems numerous times. Same thing with my 09 Tacoma on my way up to AK. My 07's defrost button controls the heated mirrors and it is not super fast it super cold out in the morning.

I think he means being able to engage into 4WD at a certain speed. You can disengage at any speed.

On my way up sometimes I would come across dry pavement so I would switch to 2HI on the fly and back to 4HI on the fly as soon as I would hit ice/snow again. I would let off the throttle slightly before engaging/dis-engaging. I did this a bazillion times and never noticed any problems engaging or dis-engaging regardless of what speed I was traveling at. After awhile the road conditions stayed poor once I got to Yukon Territory. Was in 4HI from there on out all the way to Anchorage and I wasn't taking my time.
