What if you're over payload?

My truck is 2015 CM 4wd with 5.7 engine, payload rated at 1360.

So when I was viewing the other thread about towing, it dawned on me I may have a problem. I'm about to leave on a long trip (hunting - 1200 miles) with 3 other guys, each would have a bag, rifle and bow. Plus we are taking 2 - 100qt coolers and prolly another 50qt. The coolers will be empty on the way down but full of meat/ice on the way back, and I'm going to have another passenger...so 5 guys!

It never occurred to me that I could get it over payload. If you include my topper (guessing 200 pounds), I could be 300-500 pounds over the payload.

So other than bad gas mileage and extra time to slow down, what other issues am I looking at?

Alright, this has been sitting a minute w/o responses from the Knowledge Droppers, so I'll chime in.

You'll be fine. That truck was meant to haul all those people. As long as you don't go far over the payload limit in the bed, and aren't towing, you'll be fine. Probably you should allow a little more following distance, and brake a little sooner.

Have a great trip! And post pics of dead Bambi.

With the weight evenly distributed you will be fine. I have carried 30 50lb bags of corn in bed plus me and another 200 of gear

Thanks guys I feel a little better. This is one of the big reasons I bought the truck for long travel and hauling stuff. It never even occurred to me I could get this thing over weight without towing anything - was just assuming it was beefier in the ass end. If a guy wanted to increase the payload - what are the options, bigger springs, air bags?

Legally you cannot increase the rated payload stated on your truck but there are plenty of options that can help improve your handling and braking if you carry heavy load.

I tried to stay out of this thread....failed.:D

The Tundra is built to work. I don't condone being overweight, but it does happen from time to time, no matter what truck you have. I've been overweight on my Tundra, Tacoma, and 3500 Duramax.

The key thing is you are smart and realize you may have a problem and are seeking solutions. Personally, I believe you should be fine.

A simple light, single axle trailer could solve all your problems, if funding and space permits. Renting trailers are cheap as well, and you don't have to have the headache of owning one either. I love using trailers. They are just so useful.

    Have fun on the hunt!

On a side note, you have a really nice truck.

Thank you for your input. I hope I didn't say something that made you feel like you shouldn't comment, heck that's why I posted to get some advice.

I hear what you are saying in regards to trailer, however it kind of defeats the purpose of why I have a topper, for the specific items I'm carrying on this trip anyway. I would not hesitate to use a trailer for transporting larger items though.

Certainly if I run into issues on trip I will look into small trailer for future.

Stop by CO and drop off some of that meat. That would be the best solution :D

Not it wasn't; being pulled by hitch . . . now if it was a goose neck trailer, then maybe.
And it WAS a CM :muscleflexing:

Exactly that's what I thought!! LOL

But I'm not pulling anything and apparently a good 3-500 over payload. I would never even have thought about it had I not viewed another thread that mention the somewhat low payload, once I tallied a few numbers I thought uh oh, plus it's not 30 miles but 2400 total. Looks like I'm good though if I take it easy, thanks everybody for input.
