Is LSD Necessary for my needs/uses?

    Ill be regearing the truck, hopefully in April (if the date is correct on the 5.29s).

    My question is, is installation of LSD necessary? I don't offroad much, just occasional beach trips and hitting a mud hole every now and again. I know guys just go ahead and grab the LSD when they regear, but do I even need it?

    Basically, does having LSD installed benefit me more than not having one?

    Honestly would rather spend the money on something else if it isn't 100% necessary.

    Please chime in and gimme some feedback, thanks!

    It sure is nice having a LSD, but no, not a necessity for some people. I always wished one was on my 12’ CM. I almost got stuck a few times.

    The individuals that buy a LSD do more work, snow/off-road driving, SC wheel spin control, racing, etc

    I sure would hate to pay for labor again though, if in fact you decide on going that route later on. I would think hard about that little fact.

    While you have the diffs open, it is most cost effective to install the LSD at that time. If you don't offroad much, you could just do the LSD in the rear diff.

    I would hate it too.. but its my daily, so I take pretty good care of it. im not driving around looking to bury my truck. and don't race any, bitch is too slow anyways without gears lol

    appreciate it

    is it something that's like a "better to have and not need than to need and not have" scenario? if I don't install then, I don't believe id have any reason to go back and add it.

    Although I have never been to Houston, I can relate and agree. If your not off-road a lot, don’t get into mud and probably don’t get 100” of snow per year, save your money.

    I require one on my trucks just to my location. Just to back up my empty flatbed up my driveway, even my LSD needs assistance from the front axle.

    I'm in the same boat. I'll be regearing sometime in Feb/March. I do a lot of light off-road. Maybe once a year I'll get into some nasty mud or snow, hit some slick rock in southern Utah or some rocky mining roads in Colorado. 4HI/LO has always gotten me where I was going.

    appreciate the feedback... yeah snowed twice this winter for the first time. im 25 and ive never seen that here, and it was only an inch or two haha but may just keep the extra $$$ and do something else.

    That said, if I see a nice deal on an auburn before I re-gear, I'd probably jump on it. Got my nitro gears for a great price.

    Standard on 2nd and 3rd gen. It's not a LSD in any sense of the word.

    Honestly my life would suck without it, ( a tad dramatic ) but really it is so refined and effective for the weather and the off road conditions i deal with. Today was perfect example, 6 inches of snow, knuckleheads clueless drivers late for work, and i'm just tooling along keeping my distance. It so was so easy with the surefootedness of the LSD doing what it should, engaging the 4X4 was not necessary.

    Perhaps where you live maybe not so much, but also think of the resale value.

    That is true. My 2006 AC SR5 Tundra had a true LSD differential (and it worked very well).

    Toyota decided to drop that option for some crazy reason. Toyota should not use the term LSD.

    They just use the ABS system to apply brakes to the spinning wheel and call it "LSD" Personally, I think the marketing gurus who made that decision were on LSD.

    Nannies will only react to a wheel spinning faster than the opposite. When the Auburn engages the rear wheels spin the same. Nannies should not do anything.

    I agree, "Auto LSD" is really a misnomer. I would bet they dropped the actual LSD because of cost.

    Most likely Dan. That way Toyota could tout how great the computer controlled auto "LSD" is even though the Big Three still offer lockers for some reason.(better)

    Yeah, I would much rather have a manually controlled "air-locker" instead of "Auto LSD" or conventional LSD. Just engage when needed, turn it off when not needed. I think the Taco had that option at one point.

    Chevy/GMC uses a great Eaton auto locker. Wished Eaton would offer one for Tundras...

    My '99 4runner, limited, had the factory E-locker. It was a nice option to have before deciding that the situation calls for 4x4, it made playing offroad a lot of fun as well. I found a lot of times I was going most places with just the locker when anyone else I was with had already engaged 4x4. Then in 4x4, it was a go anywhere vehicle. Handled multi-wheel-off-ground situations easily.

    Is there an E-locker option for the Tundra? (I haven't looked or searched the forum)

    That's why even an Auburn limited slip would be great to have at least although I prefer an E locker.

    2 lockers I know of for Tundra: Auburn or ARB. The ARB uses an air compressor.
