    I'm confused too.

Dealerships change out tranny fluid. They say sealed but not for life. When I bought my 07 Tacoma the sales guy was confident it was sealed which meant no tranny fluid changes. He was definitely wrong. It's in the maintenance schedule to change

I prefer drain and fill to a flush, as some shops offer. Although I haven't yet changed the fluid on my Tundra, my experience with other transmissions is that you can't really drain out all of the fluid, only a fraction of it. So I'll drive it for a week or so, then drain and fill again, and do the same a few more times until I'm confident I've been able to replace all of the old fluid over a period of time.

I took mine to Valvoline unhooked the cooler in front of the radiator and inserted a paper clip in the tem by pass housing started it and it pushed the old fluid out while new fluid pumped in.

Totally confused too!!! I was under the impression that the dealer had to do the full blown tranny fluid change (at the 100K recommended mileage) because the tranny had to be at a certain temp for proper fill before resealing. (Just like Mercedes trannies) Was told to wait for winter/cooler weather to allow for everything to cool off so it doesn't take all day to get it done. Am I wrong about this?? What gives?? Why are folks getting it done by 3rd party econ lube shops , and are they doing it correctly to Toyota specs??? Tranny rebuilds are not cheap. Once the tranny is sealed, it's sealed. Sealed as in "closed". Tranny fluid expands under heat like any other fluid. Seems to me the dealer would be best. Is "Valvoline" taking this under consideration when doing the fluid change or doing it like an un-sealed (dip stick) tranny???

Toyota will only take out the drain plug and drain what is in pan which is app 4 quarts you will be adding 4 new quarts to 8 dirty quarts take it to Valvoline the machine will push in the new fluid in as the old fluid comes out if you take 10 out and put 10 in then the level will be right took mine to Toyota to have level check to make sure and they said it was right in Toyota spec.

No offense, but ridiculous, IMO . I'm pretty sure if I take my Tundra to Stevenson's West where @LOTSOFTOYS works, they won't drain just the pan and then add 4 quarts and mix with 8 quarts dirty AF. It will be done properly. Pretty sure @LOTSOFTOYS will comment on this. You may want to find another dealer. Just sayin. Can you reference what dealer/Toyota tech did such a thing??? Why would you have Valvoline guess what the proper level is and then take your truck to Toyota to verify (after being SEALED by the Valvoline guys) ???? Did Toyota UNSEAL the tranny and verify the level, for free?????? AT fluid expands and contracts like any other fluid. In a SEALED system the temp of the tranny (the temp of any sealed system for that matter) needs to be at a certain temp before draining and refilling. It's then sealed. SEALED. FOR UP TO 100K depending on use. ???????? I could be wrong. Maybe anyone can do this. None of this is making any sense now.

Let me clear something up for everyone. What is recommended is a drain and fill at approx. 60-90k depending on driving habits. We do drain approx 4 qts and put 4 qts back in. Then we check level based on temp with the scan tool. You can also flush it. After you have flushed it, u then have to let it cool down. Takes 6 hours or so... and restart it and check level with scan tool.
I don't sell many flushes because they are so expensive. Drain and fill seems odd because u only take 4 qts out, but that is what is recommended. It works just fine and if u stay on top of your intervals it'll be fine. I did it to my truck.
Only time I sell a flush is if the fluid was contaminated somehow or if the wrong fluid was installed. Toyotas world standard fluid is very expensive and it is just known throughout mechanics, Toyotas like to have Toyota fluid. Aftermarket companies claim their fluids work just fine. Some do some do bad things....

Bottom line. What's more important to u? Saving a few bucks at jiffy lube or spending ur money on 5000 dollar trans when it slips because of the wrong fluid?

OK, not ridiculous @jduane45, just didn't sound right. I always thought a fluid change was a fluid "change". Thanks for clearing that up Jace. I'm getting ready to schedule the tranny fluid with "West" probably within the next month. I'm at 63K, 8.5 years. The drain or flush or play it by ear until my appt date?

Imo like I said, a drain and fill does the trick just fine. If u want to shell out 500 bucks, I'll flush it. U won't notice any difference between the two. And that's perfect mileage to do it at

I did put toyotas World standard transmission fluid back in went and bought it at Toyota dealership all I wanted to do was replace all the fluid it only cost me 70 bucks to hook up on machine and get it done. I bought truck as a repo don't know if it had done a lot of pulling or not anyway I didn't like the look of fluid was real dark but smelled alright and yes I paid Toyota to check the level and was done with scan tool and I dropped it off it sat for 3-4hrs before it was check and now it shifts smooth cant even hardly tell when it does.

So the $200 quote that I got last time at Stevenson's West was just to drain 4 qts and refill?? $200??? Does the "trick just fine" ?? Bull Shift!! No more point going to your dealer apparently.

A quart of fluid is like 15 bucks. So times 4 plus one hour labor end up being just under 200.

I'm still going to Stevenson's to get it done. I stand corrected and I'm now eating some humble pie. After I thought about it, when you add up the cost for the fluid plus the labor, $200 isn't that bad considering the length of time between maintenance cycles. Pretty much peanuts over the long run.

Here is my mind set about this. My 07 Tundra has only a little over 64K miles. Toyota recommends fluid "checkup" at 100K. My 07 is now almost 9 yrs old. I have all service records from day #1. The same AT fluid is now almost 9 yrs old. I'm thinking a total fluid change out. Not just 4 qts which may be good enough. I'm my line of work, "good enough " is not good enough, but maybe "good enough" is good enough for other situations. For those of you here on this site........... What would you do in my situation???????? Remember , an 07 with only 64K, but 9 yrs old. Pay the $200 for the check up, or go full monty and spend a 1/2 grand for an AT fluid change? Keep in mind, if I spend the 1/2 grand total fluid change,or even go with the $200 fix, I'm probably good to go for another 100K miles either way. Apples and Oranges????

Thanks for the response. You would think synth fluid should be good to go. I need to check with Jace. What synth are you considering?
