Thinking of trading my '10 for an '18 but have concerns

I have a '10 4x4 CM base I ordered 8 years ago and have had since, I had to order it as I wanted a bench seat in the front, it has been a good truck which I had planned to keep for a long time. I only have 42k miles on it. Recently I have discovered both the front floor corners of the bed are rusting through and both cam towers are leaking, pretty disappointed with both things. I have been driving a smaller vehicle as my daily for most of the time I owned the Tundra but I am thinking I may start driving it all the time now. I would like a new one for the larger fuel tank and a few other upgrades, I would probably get a limited this time, but not sure it would be worth it and I wonder if there will be some new issue that will come up like the bed rust issue. My current truck is pretty mint besides the mentioned items, I would imagine it would bring good money for trade in, I would probably not sell it private party due to the issues.

 

How about having this few items corrected, add some upgrades, save some money, drive it more often and keep it moving.

Get the immediate issue's fixed and wait for the 4th Gen to come. Also there's supposed to be some new and improved Pro's as stated in 2 threads going. Good luck

 

X3, I have a 2010, I'm not in your shoes, but I like to think that I would have those issues repaired. I despise car shopping, dealers, finance, the whole process. I've also got the Tundra to a good point right now where I wouldn't want to have to replicate all of that work on a new-to-me truck.

The cam towers scare me and I hope mine were either dealt with by the PO or they never become an issue. If they do start to leak I will probably spend some time on the phone with Toyota customer care and hopefully get them to eat some of the bill since it's a well known issue. If efforts with Toyota and my local dealer both failed I may actually consider trading it in. I think my mentality is I would rather eat a little on trade-in instead of putting $2k+ into the truck.

The bed rust is an easy one. Do you have a spray in bed liner? Find a good local welder or even a friend who is pretty good at welding. Cut out the affected areas and weld in some new pieces. Incorporate a few bigger drains while you're at it. I find that the front of my Tundra holds more water than any other pickup I've had. After the repair is made have the areas re-sprayed with bed liner. Or.....find a small body shop that also does spray in liners and tell them to have at it. This should be $500-$800 depending on the extent of the rust.

 

Do you have a plastic bed liner or have you left standing water in the bed? It’s strange that you have that issue.

I traded for an ‘18 earlier this month and it’s one smooth ride. Good luck with the decision.

 

Thanks for the feedback, I like the truck and have it setup exactly the way I want it, nothing crazy, leveled with 5100s, RW wheels and tires, bed cover, seat covers, Husky mats, ect...
To answer the question on the bed rust, it has had a factory bed liner since new, also has had a bed cover on it since new, from what I have read on other sites the bed rust is pretty common, I could have it fixed, but the cam towers are a concern, not thrilled to have the motor all taken apart even if it is covered under warrantee.

 

I have a 2010 and had the bed rust. Toyota was replacing the beds since the rust came from the bottom up. It fell in the rust perforation warranty. Mine like yours was out of warranty so I had it fixed. The body shop cut out the places it had rusted through and replaced with new metal. They sandblasted any surface rust while they had the bed off, primed, painted then applied a rust proofing to the entire bottom of the bed. I then had the bed undercoated. The total I had in the bed repair was a little under $2000 but $600 of that was the LineX premium. My truck is currently at the dealership getting the cam tower repaired. I called Toyota and they worked out a deal that lowered the cost. Like the others have said give them a call.

I went by a Toyota dealer this afternoon and just swung through the lot to see what they had, they had a '18 SR5, pretty loaded, sticker was almost $47k. Couple things that surprised me were no trans temp gauge, single zone heating and no lights in the doors when you open them, surprised they removed those things, I believe they were standard on all models in '10

also no payments is always better ..and I would wait for the gen 4. I'm hoping better gas mileage and still a bigger tank = longer range

 

@Murph28 if toyota was going to replace your bed under the rust perforation warranty then why did you pay to have it repaired? The way your post is worded just has me a little confused. Just curious.

That's a lot of work to pull the bed, make all the repairs, and reassemble.

 

Toyota is helping with the cam tower leak. The bed rust was out of warranty. Toyota had a tsb on the bed rust. If you had the rust and was with in the rust perforation warranty period they replaced the bed. I was out of warranty by 2 years. I was explaining it may be better to fix the bed than buy a new truck.
