New to Toyota Tundra

    Hi. As a newbie to the site, I drove my first Toyota Tundra today, a 2013 with 47K miles on it. I've had Ford F-150's since '96, but the reviews plus performance forced me to consider this guy. I was very pleased with this Limited model test drive, and thought I would ask those of you have have been loyal to this brand if there are any issues you might be aware of with this year and model of truck. Any insight or input would be much appreciated.

    Firestone Airbags; remote starter; replaced stock mirrors with larger, pull-out mirrors for towing; hard plastic sectional cover for bed.
    Issues? Not with Tundra's....well, a few minor ones like the central computer module needing to be updated to fix some software bugs. (My 2014 would spontaneously lock up then reboot about every 20 minutes....dealer knew about the issue and fixed it free.)

    Do you use the truck for towing anything? If so, make sure you get the right size engine and towing package you may need.

    Other than that, we mostly argue over the best color....(RED rules....the others drool!)

    My Father-in-Law, who lives in Maine, has a 2002 Tundra he bought new. Last summer we flew home to visit and he let me drive it around. The only issue with it is the power door lock on the driver's side doesn't work anymore. (Probably an easy fix but he wasn't worried about)

    Thanks for all the input. Really appreciated. I've just started looking so all I have done is the Carfax stuff to check the background. Seems clean except for a bumper bash that looks as if was a parking lot thing. I had an F-150 which had plug problems to the tune of 2K, so I don't want to repeat that. The 5.7 really seems to have the guts to haul about anything. This will be just for a retired old guy, and will in all likelihood be the last one I own. Just wanted to make sure it outlives me, which, from what it sounds, probably will.:hattip:

    Welcome, sounds like you found a keeper. They are good looking, dependable truck that is plenty capable as well. Tundras also have great resale value should you decide you want to upgrade in the future.

    Welcome Hank. I haven't heard of any "common" problems with Tundras, I'm on my 5th. The only problem I ever had, not really a problem, was a serpentine belt had to be replaced kinda early +/- 35k. You might visually inspect it for cracks.

    Welcome to the Tundra.

    In my humble opinion, you just can’t get a better all around 1/2 ton truck.

    Look into the small details:

    -4 piston front calipers. Look at how easy they are to service and rebuildable. Very good stopping power and can take some serious abuse (12 and newer with the backing plate upgrade).

    -Steering is very precise. Service your power steering fluid every 40k and use caution on lifts with 12-13’ trucks, the steering rack should last a long time.

    -Drivetrain just compliments itself. As you know, having the most power doesn’t do you any good if it doesn’t get to the ground efficiently.

    - Interiors in the Limited package and higher are pretty nice. Plenty of room, storage galore, rear heat on the CM.

    Since this forum is honest, things to look for:

    -research cam tower leak and the warning signs.

    -AIP is not really a problem on 13’s.

    -Front differential, drivers side needle bearing can be an issue. There is a 180.00 fix through ECGS (east coast gear supply), and it is called a bushing bearing. I can’t remember what year Toyota started upgrading the bearing, but I think it was in 13’. Most people never have any issues. Mine went out, and Toyota didn’t want to change out the bearing, so they just put a whole new front differential in for me. Their 2400.00.

    Good luck, and hopefully you go with the Tundra.

    Welcome from WI. As @ColoradoTJ said, the cam tower leak is probably the biggest thing to look for. I would check into the service records on the truck as well. Any service done by a Toyota dealer should be available to you if you have the VIN. I Love my '13 Crewmax, lots of room and lots of power. Good luck!

    Wow! I'm overwhelmed with the positive responses. Thanks so much for all input. I have heard about the cam tower leak. Is there a permanent fix for this, or is it just necessary to remain vigilant and replace the gasket or seal (if that is the repair necessary)? Haven't done much research on this issue.
