ABS & Traction Control lights

Gentlemen-

I have a problem I think-
First snow in my tundra, bout 8" or so, and as I'm pulling into my driveway I'm in 2 hi.
Start to begin my roughly 3 point turn to back into my garage and the TC and ABS lights start going haywire. A few chimes too. I put it in 4hi. And then the 4hi and 4 lo lights go on too.

Finally sort out the 4lo, 4hi thing and back into garage. The TC and ABS Lights won't turn off on the instrument panel. Immediately I refer to manual and it says to take it into dealer. I call dealer, and the dealer said it's probably just bunch of snow ice on the sensors. If it melts they'll cut off. Happens a lot during the snowy parts of the year. Does this sound right / normal? He said as long as they aren't blinking it's safe to drive. I made an appointment tomorrow for them to look at. He said if the lights are off I can cancel the appointment. Sound right?

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

 

I switched to 4 hi. The 4 lo started blinking. So I stopped, put it in N then pushed and switched to 4-lo

 

Almost like it was "telling me" to put it into 4 lo

 

Yeah. Gave it about 5 minutes. May go out in another hour or two to test the melting theory. It's 25F here right now.

 

Man I hope so. Would gladly give the ih5 - hahaha

How does a wheel sensor break just from performing a 3 point turn and correctly switching from 4l to 4h etc?

Yeah I'll check in the am and it'll go to the dealer if they're still on. (12k/12mo unlimited for the CPO)

*Update*

I know all of you slept as little as I did last night.

Well, the instrument lights remained on when I fired her up this morning *panic* pulled out of the garage in 2hi on to the hockey rink that replaced my driveway overnight.
Put it into 4hi. Worked properly.
Stopped,N, put into 4lo. Worked properly.
Stopped,N, put back into 4hi (my road out of my "neighborhood" requires 4wheel in snow and ice).
After about 100ft of driving on my road in 4hi, both lights go off and remain off for my entire commute into work (2hi).

Hooray! Looks like it was *frozen* sensors and not *broken* sensors.

Appreciate your help though Sean. @Sean266 Gonna have the dealer make a note on my file though just in case it happens again. I've got 5 months of snow ahead of me. Don't want a problem anytime we get anything over 8-10" (we do).

 

Hi -

Was driving and when stopped at a red light the hi and low 4 started flashing as well as the traction light turned on and the ABS AND the emergency brake light . I checked to make sure I did not have my emergency brake on (did not) then pulled over. The hi and low and emergency brake turned off but traction and ABS light stayed solid on. Drove one block home and turned off engine - then back on and both ABS and traction lights still on solidly. Tried again after an hour off and still the same. Totally freaked out as I bought a new truck to AVOID costly fixes. It takes everything for me to make my loan payments and now a brand new truck with 35,000.00 needs to go to the shop- unless someone has a suggestion a woman with NO mechanical knowledge can try. Not a good start to 2017

 

Are you in a snowy climate?

@2015Tundramom Re-read this entire thread.

If you've driven through some deep or sticky snow the abs sensors can freeze up. Try and stick it in a garage over night. Or if you can get to a car wash (enclosed) to help clear things out.

Also if the truck is brand new it's under warranty. Just contact the dealer and let them know. They will likely tell you the same thing.

my turn. drove to work, no issues. went to leave, abs and traction lights were on, but went out as soon as i stepped on the brakes and put it in gear. completely fine while i hooked up to the trailer, towed it to a friends, and drove to dinner, but left the pub and the lights were on the entire way home. i live in a snowy climate, but it's been 45 degrees plus every day and no snow.

hopefully i can crawl around this weekend and check the sensors and wires for visible damage or plugging. i've also heard to double check that the stop light switch plug is fully seated.

if not, a friend used to be a master tech for toyota, so i'll hit him up and see if he can plug in and find the issue. i'll update when i figure it out. mine is actually a second gen, but maybe it will still help you guys

 

Hey guys, my 2017 TRD pulled out of a slippery spot and abs turned on, now won’t go off. Code reader is giving me totally unrelated codes about tranny. Cleaned the shit out of everything and my backyard mech. Tells me to bring it in. I’m 4000 over warranty so before bending over to dealer I’m hoping my boys on here can save me.

 

Whatever happened with this issue of yours? I’m experiencing similar symptoms today for the first time.

Weird. Been a snowy week here in CO, but today was warm, parked truck today next to road on top of snow for a few hours. Got in truck, threw her in drive and flipped a U, 4hi flashes and abs/slip warning light stays on. 4wd will not work. Turn off truck, only ABS and Slip Indicator lights are on; 4wd works fine. Currently just abs/slip lights. Will occasionally include the 4hi. Has also started with no lights on and drove fine, including 4wd.
Plenty warm on my drive way all day, hosed off sensors and wiring looks okay, will do a more detailed inspection tomorrow as this seems the only possibility.
Just replaced diff fluid a month ago (front diff looked new).
Luckily have appt. for a tranny drain/refill at the dealer this coming Friday if it doesn’t go away.
Any thread I’ve come upon either suggests faulty wheel sensor or it ends w/ no resolution.
No check engine light.

 

So i am guessing that the "Wheel Sensor" yall are referring too is different than the sensor for tire inflation. I have 2 questions, 1.) is the sensor obvious on each tire or is there something specific that identifies it as such and 2) without a code reader how do i determine which sensor is bad if there are no obvious signs of damage to the sensor?

I guess I should have preface my comment with, I am not much of a mechanic !!!lol

 

Follow these instructions and you’ll get blinks on your dash which can be traced back to a certain wheel sensor. Worked for me, see my post above yours. Mine turned out to be the slightest bit of corrosion on one of the two pins in the wheel sensor. I saw the tiniest bit of greenish corrosion on the wheel sensor that was throwing code, scraped it off, used some baking soda to neutralize and haven’t had an issue since. Good luck

 

My truck did this a couple months ago. It will most likely be the wheel speed sensor.

 

This seems to be an old post but I wanted to chime in and let others know how i was able to remedy the TC and ABS light coming on out of the blue. My issue also include, my throttle cutting out when in accelerating from a stop light on occasion. This came out of no where for me and started with the throttle intermittently cutting out while accelerating which I would just let off the gas and then apply again and the truck would proceed without real issue for about a week. Then the TC and ABS light came on and then the CEL and flashing 4LO. These lights of course led to several codes P0724, C1201, C1249. these all pointed towards a brake circuit or a brake switch issue. So checked under the front end and finally noticed that both abs wire harnesses had rubbed through. i had seen where several people had splice their wires back together but i figure it would be best to replace the harnesses and they roughly run about $110 for the drivers side and about $80 for the passengers side. It is pretty straight forward to replace them and ensure the wire doesn't get loose and rub through again. Once I replaced both harnesses, I cleared the codes and then drove it around the block several times and did not experience any of the previous symptoms that caused me to find the faulty wires. It has been about 4 weeks now with about 1k miles on the recent fix without any reoccurring issues.

So I hope this helps anyone else diagnose and solve their issues if they are anything like what i went through.

My truck is a 2011 Tundra CrewMax on a 6 inch lift with 35 inch tires which has 64K miles on the clock. I have no other issues with the suspension or steering.
