I always change my engine oil hot.
I have changed my Tundra's engine oil cold a week ago.

What are the plus and minuses of changing engine oil hot or cold?

Cold: oil flows slower so you need more time. At the same time, people say the heavier dirty oil, sitting at the bottom of the oil pan, comes out first.
    Hot: faster oil change.

    What do you think?

I think just changing your oil.....is all that people need to worry about. Hot or cold at least it’s fresh oil.

not sure i buy into the "heavier" dirtier oil at the bottom comes out first.

What would come out first is water, if you had any in your oil, since the oil would float on top of that. For a DD, there should be next to zero moisture in the oil, so if you're changing oil and water's coming out first, you've got bigger problems than an oil change.

I change mine hot. you'll get more out due to the lower viscosity.

I thought it was all about getting the dirt/particulate in suspension prior to draining.

i agree with that too but we should be talking very small dirt particles else we need better filters

With 0w20 oil, changing it cold would be the lower viscosity.

Mine is changed hot, only cuz I drive it to the dealer. Yamaha recommends an engine to be running before turning off and changing the engine oil.

Yeah, why not just wait until it's -15° in that case, and change it out on your driveway.

If your running full synthetic oil it's viscosity is not really affected by temperature that's one of the benefits of synthetic so no need to try to burn yourself.

Drain it with engine running, cycles all the dirty oil out of the crevices.

This ^^ was my logic. I agree most will drain their oil when the engine was been warmed, as do I. My point was that the Viscosity actually Increases with the rise in engine temp, talking about Multi Vis oil here (0w20, 15w30 ect....).

    Warm.

I also run magnets on my drain plug.

My understanding of multi-viscosity oil. The oil is not "thinner" at lower temps. Take 0w20 for example. At say 0 degrees (I'm not sure what they use for actual testing and rating) the oil has the properties of a 0w oil. But at say 200 degrees the oil has the properties of a 20w oil. The 20w oil at 200 degrees will still be "thinner" than the 0w oil at 20 degrees. It's merely how the oil reacts at different temperatures. It's all about trying to keep more of a linear curve as the oil heats up, the oil still thins out, just not as fast as if it were a straight-weight oil.

Well said ^. Agree 100%. Ambient temperature does need to be factored in.

No it doesn't. It just doesn't thin as much as the lower index would in a straight weight oil.

Oh....well, guess that was settled in subsequent posts.
