Bought my Tundra less than a week ago. They paired my phone to the truck at dealer. I do not get alerted when I get a text message while I’m in the truck and the phone is connected. Is this a phone thing or a truck thing or combination of both. I’m pretty technology illiterate so bear with me. My phone is an IPhone 8

You need to be on the, "Bluetooth" option on your radio. If you are listening to anything else, AM, FM, XM, etc, you will not hear anything from the phone.

Un-pair and re-pair your phone to the head unit. It took a couple times for mine to receive texts. If it ask for permission to access the phone hit yes.

First, congrats on the new truck.

Second, and I may be a minority with my opinion, but get used to the worst technology in modern vehicles today.

I’ve had this problem since I bought my truck last year. Make sure you’ve allowed notifications on the Entune App, and that you have preview messages on as well in Messages. For a while this worked for me, but now I’m having the same issues of not receiving any text alerts, or if the message does pop up on my screen the “read”option is grayed out. Now I’m back to I toggling Bluetooth on/off every time I get into my truck.

I’m not sure if there is a fix, the dealership(s) have been unable to diagnose or fix the issue.

The Entune experience is absolute garbage. I won’t even get into my opinion on the utter shittiness of the voice recognition feature. Wish Toyota would drop the Entune experiment and just give us CarPlay.

I forgot about the actual text messaging part within Entune. I do not use this Entune feature, however, I do use text messaging a lot through the radio. I always keep my iPhone in the little tray of the center console and whenever I hear my phone sound with a new text, I simply press and hold the steering wheel "dial" button. This activates the iPhone Siri assistant over the speakers and I simply say "read text message" . Siri will then read the text over the speakers and also allowing me to speak a verbal reply. Works great consistently every time.

Im gonna try this, as my messages only pop up occasionally. My Tacoma has Entune and it worked more than desired

I think you will like this approach. I do a lot of business while driving and use this approach often. I've had passengers in the truck who are hard core techies state they were amazed how I was interacting with the iPhone while never taking my hands off the steering wheel or having to look at the radio. I do the same for getting directions somewhere. I use the directions on the iPhone and simply ask Siri for directions. Then listen for the turn by turn.

I’ve used SIRI before but not that often. She’s pretty helpful, by I’ve just started using an iPhone so I’m sure I still have a ton that I havent scratched the surface of

I had the same problem...after trying all kinds of updates, etc., I found that my settings on my phone had the "preview messages" option turned off. I turned it on, and now it works fine.

That could be coming for 2019 models, they’re gonna you it for the Avalon first and roll it out to other models. I read an article that says BMW want to start subscription to car play, and of course the rest will follow that model
