I'd like to get a saltwater one in the near future...I hear they pricey to maintain though?

Before we moved I had a 2 saltwater tanks and honestly they are more expensive to set up than maintain be getting them to that point is a lot of work

My son has a 100 gal, 120 gal, 200 gal in the house. All salt water. He has a 300 gal in storage. And ,no, I will not help him move it. He will have to get his friends to help. I can ask him to post some pics here of his set ups if OK.

I'll talk to him the the morning before I go to work. He's got some pretty cool, rare fish. It's all my fault. I got him interested years ago. Didn't realize it would get to this. Sheesh!!

Some Mods :) See build thread for details
My wife really wants one but i keep saying no because i think it would be a pain to clean all the time and expensive to maintain as well.
What is the initial setup cost roughly. Lets say in the 100gal range. Tank, fish, plants, filters, food, etc?
    How often do you clean?
How much are you spending monthly to maintain? Time and Money?

I have my filtration setup to auto top off and auto drain and fill a percentage of water per day, initial cost on this setup was about 5-7k

The filtration system consists of a Piggy back RO system making about 180 gallons per day. A three stage filtration system passing through different micron filters then going three three more stages of bio ball filtration before entering a UV sterilizer then back into the tank.
In the tank are various plants, neon tetras, Angel fish, and some other random fish. It's awesome to watch them all interact. The lighting system is all LED and intensely powerful!!

The two five gallon buckets are micro and Macro elements pumped in via a ultra slow feed pump, and the canister is C02 to feed the plants. I build everything including the wood work for the tank itself, and even the C02 regulator for the carbon dioxide feeding system.

speaking from a freshwater set-up perspective... if you contact your local aquarium society you can get a far better buy on less generic fish than if you buy from pet stores. i'd bet you can get a 125 gallon-sump installed tank, fish, decent lighting, a nice stand and everything included for less than $750 usd.
depending on how many and what kind of occupants you go with, if you change 10-20% of the water with a gravel wash twice monthly you're already doing better than most people out there. once some routine has been established an aquarium is very little maintenance.

Not really as difficult as you think as long as you buy the top notch filtration systems and have all the local contacts here in Denver to guide you right. Fish Den, Todd's, "Fish". The old fart that owns "Fish" pretty much got all the other "top" guys like Todd, get started in their business. They all worked for him at some point. Mark Sherman. Used to be a big time 4 wheeler. He looks like Jerry Garcia , but still breathing. Told me he was 4X4 ing with his CJ before Lake Powell was Lake Powell. Late 50's. Just remembered now to have my son take some pics to post.

He does. The salt tanks are in my grand kids rooms and I didn't want to disturb them. Puffers, anemones, sea cukes, Okinawa lion fish, toad fish , scorpion fish, skates, etc.

My son's 300 gallon setup w/ complete filtration setup was $3500.00 new according to the owner. Son got everything for $400 of Craig's.

Nice, I loved my salt tanks. It sounds like your son is like I used to be, I had more tanks set up at one time than I care to discuss

There are 8 tanks in the house. I forgot about the "smaller" ones. Water bill sucks. An empty 200 gallon in the garage plus the 300 in storage.

I think the most I ever had at once was 7, ranging from a 2.5 gallon nano reef, a 37 gallon reef, a few 55 gallon tanks (fresh and salt) and a 120 gallon freshwater I sold them all when we moved and just got beck into it with my 72 gallon cichlid tank

I'd that 300 a DD? Interested in selling?

When I get home will find the credit video of my 210i had. Sold when I bought my house as no way with limited help would I have transferred a running tank if that size without a disaster. Especially since I can't fit it down my basement stairs and I want to reinforce my office for before big tank

My son's 300g came from the sellers' living room. All the plumbing/filter works were routed to the basement. The plan is to get it up and running this winter. Huge project. Fortunately the landlord is very cool with it. He is an ex-sheriff, now preacher. He and his wife have 5 young adopted kids from northern Africa. They actually have no problem with a bazillion fish tanks in their house. (Cheaper than going to our Downtown Aquarium). Actually as far as aquariums go, the Denver Downtown Aquarium is world class as it should be. http://www.aquariumrestaurants.com/downtownaquariumdenver/default.asp
