    GASTONIA, N.C. --
A teen has died in North Carolina after he was pulled into a wood chipper on his first day on the job.

Mason Cox, 19, was putting tree limbs into the wood chipper outside a job site in Kings Mountain when business owner Jon Crawford and other workers heard the machine get bogged down.

WRAL-TV reports Cox was attempting to kick a tree branch that got jammed in the machine when he was pulled in.

Crawford hit the kill switch and put the machine in reverse, but it was already too late. Cox was pulled into the machine, sending his co-workers and boss into a tailspin of emotion.

His colleagues started running around in shock, ripping off their gloves and their hats. Crawford meanwhile suffered a heart attack at the scene and had to be rushed to the hospital.

Cox had just started working for Crawford's Tree and Stump Grinding Service on Saturday.

The victim's grandmother, Alice Neal, told WSOC-TV she has been haunted by the thoughts of the tragedy.

"How could this happen to such a vibrant, young gentleman?" Neal asked.

OSHA is investigating the accident. Police ruled the incident as accidental, and no foul play is suspected

Part of my OSHA training at AB back in college was a discussion on proper PPE for the job you are doing. They told us about an incident in Fort Collins where a wood chipper pulled a guy in because he was wearing gloves that got snagged on the branches. His partner was in the tree cutting the branches. He watched it happen and was not able to do a thing. The largest part left of the guy was a piece of his thumb in the glove. So sad.

For his first day on the job! And they let him handle feeding the chipper??? Too bad too....this kid wanted to work and earn a living unlike so many others his age these days.
First day on the job...trying to hurry up to impress the other workers?
A guy that lives across the street from cut off all his fingers on one hand...first week of his new job at a cabinet shop and they let him run the big 5head molder. Really nice guy and he stays positive. I help him out whenever he needs a hand...no pun intended.

The wood chipper kid probably had lack of safety training and ignorance for trying to kick the branches in. I assume he had to have climbed up onto the chipper to get his foot on branches.

I agree with tacogrande, should have never been working that shredder, especially by himself. I see it all to often at my work where apprentices are given a job by themselves with no mechanic or a more experienced worker. Just terrible, our prayers and thoughts to that family.

Clearly he wasn't trained... my brother is A foreman on a professional tree crew. He's told me about the training they go through. First day, u don't even get close to the chipper. Training.

Also... if u kick a stick into a chipper, your as intelligent as said stick. Darwin takes effect here...

You must not know about tree industry. This is the lowest thing you can do. This is a beginner job where you chip limbs. There was two employees experience should I say with this subcontractor also.

He was trained but just did something I think without thinking. It happened so fast nothing could have saved him so sad but accident happen on all jobs. This is just a very dangerous job from chipping brush to using chainsaws to going up in bucket truck to climbing tree to cutting it down. Dangerous job.

Only God knows what happened. He was trained and this is the beginners work on a tree service. It was his day and God only knows what happened. You can't train common sense all you can do is say don't stand on or near machine that machine had a working safety devices and don't stick arm or legs near.
