The emissions test depends on the county and tailpipe tests are required if it's older than 96 if you're near a larger metro area. 96 and newer is pretty much just a visual inspection and cap test.

I actually don't terribly mind the yearly inspection because at least then people are forced to at least once a year maintain their junk. Living close to the Ohio line we see all kinds of poorly maintained vehicles, belts showing on tires, cracked up windows, bungees holding hoods shut, missing body panels, etc.

Yes it's true. The first character in the licence # is different for open bed (commercial) vs. non-commercial trucks. If you have the special character and get caught without the bed cover on, you risk a ticket.

At least California doesn't charge annual property tax on cars...

    Connecticut and Virginia do!

I've talked to two difference Connecticut residents who used a legal loophole to register their vehicles in Maine. The first guy, who was showing his truck at a cruise night, owned a hot-rodded 1993 Chevy S-10 pickup with a big block in the bed. He only registered it in Maine because it would not pass Connecticut's strict emissions test and was too new to register as an antique (this was back in 2015, and it's probably considered an antique in CT now). He planned on transferring the title and registration back to Connecticut one he could legally register it as antique, and probably has by now...

The other guy I met at a swap meet in New Jersey in September 2017. He had a 2002ish Chevy Express conversion van that he used as a work van for his body shop, and he didn't owe any back taxes, but he didn't feel like paying $200 a year in addition to registration. This van was worth maybe $3,000.

One of these articles discusses how some Connecticut residents register in Maine because they owe back taxes in Connecticut and thus can't register their vehicle as a result. However, I think some people just don't want to pay these unnecessary taxes...

One example used in the article is used $7K vehicle, on which the annual property tax would be about $700! That's in addition to sales tax, registration, insurance, title fee, and emissions testing!

    Look at it this way...

You're a wealthy Connecticut resident and you've just paid cash for a brand new $400K Rolls-Royce Phantom. By the calculations in the article, annual property tax on your new Rolls-Royce would be $40K! Obviously, you're a multimillionaire so you can afford a Rolls-Royce and all the expenses associated with owning one. Insurance and routine maintenance are to be expected. Sales tax is also an unavoidable reality. Annual emissions testing is another necessary evil. But, just because you can afford $40K in property taxes on your new luxury car every year, why in the bloody hell would you want to pay it if you could avoid it?!?! You're rich, not stupid. That money could be spend on renovating your house, paying your kid's college tuition, and buying a new Tundra for situations like driving to Home Depot, where bringing a Rolls-Royce would just be a bad idea...

Last years was 1289.00 on my GMC. If I would have decided on the Denali (don’t like sunroofs, so I stepped down to the SLT) it would have been more.

My 12’ GS Corvette was 3800.00 to register. That was fun.

My co-worker is from Armstrong county PA and was floored by the cost of housing and just about everything else.

I posted this in a thread called Car Porn on Tacoma World...

The owner used a loophole in the system to register it in Maine because it wouldn't pass the emissions test, and at the time it wasn't old enough to be registered as an antique vehicle...

    ORIGINAL POST:
My maternal grandmother passed away in January 2015 at 88 years of age. As per her wishes, she was cremated and buried next to her husband (my Grandpa who I'm named after; died in 1982 at age 61 from Alzheimer's). My family on my mom's side turned what could have been a sad occasion into a celebration of a great woman's life. My Grandma and Grandpa are buried at a church in Connecticut. My family rented a beautiful beachfront home in Branford, Connecticut for a week. I found out about a cruise night in nearby North Branford on the second to last day we were in Connecticut, and my dad and I went.

This is a heavily customized 1993 Chevrolet S-10. Look very closely at this truck...

Does anything seem weird about it? Anything at all?

On first glance, it would appear that this truck has no engine!

Let's take a look out back, shall we?

    That's right...

You may notice that this truck is registered in Maine. As I said before, these pictures were taken at a cruise night in Connecticut. I assumed the guy who owned this truck was from Maine and visiting family or something, and asked him where in Maine he was from (My paternal grandma has a lakefront property in Southern Maine).

He tells me that he is a Connecticut resident. He owns a house, has a Connecticut driver's license, and his daily driver is registered in Connecticut. With all of the modifications, this S-10 would not pass the annual emissions test required by the state of Connecticut! It's a 1993 model, so it's also too new to be registered as an antique in Connecticut. Maine, however, is much more lax about what can be registered as an antique. He legally registered it in Maine through the mail (Maine title, registration, insurance, etc...), and plans on registering in Connecticut as an antique once it's old enough! Don't you just love loopholes?
