Looking at an 06 - Warning signs?

...is there anything I should be on the lookout for?

It's a 2006 Limited Quad Cab 4x4 with about 195K miles (300K kms) on it. Looks pretty stock. Lots of highway miles, apparently.

 

Frame rust, oil leaks/seeps??

 

Truck is out-of-town; going to look at it tomorrow if I can get in touch with the seller.

Are the frames an issue on these?

 

Don't think so. Was just concerned about the usual potential stuff like excessive frame rust from salt. Not sure if a lot road salt is used in your neck of the woods.

 

Yeah, the roads are well salted. Pretty unavoidable in my neck of the woods.

200k miles feels like a lot to me.. but the truck is priced right around $10k Canadian (Around $8k USD).

So I guess what I'm really asking is if there are any common problems on this generation of trucks I should watch out for? Like, "Transmission tends to explode and kill all passengers at 201,000 miles". haha.

 

06 had the AIP issues, 4.7 needs timing belts every 90k so if that hasn't been done plan on another $1k for a shop to do it.

They were under the frame recall so for sure check that out well

 

A broken timing belt could be a bit of a small explosion so to speak. Certainly not something you would want to have happen. Worth the money to replace if truck is super clean..IMO..

 

Absolutely worth it, my 04 had 168k with no major issues when I bought it and I got the seller to knock $500 off the asking price because the belt replacement was unknown. But yea definitely don't want it to break.

 

I bought my 06 with 160 on it, now has 186 and counting. Check the frame well, ask about the timing belt/water pump, mine is pretty solid. They did have air pump issues. Mine were replaced by the previous owner at my dealership at 150k.

I have found that if you do a Wikipedia search you can learn about all failures, flaws, recalls, and TSB’s, by model/year. This is a great place to start.

 

Fellow Canadian here. 8 months ago I sold a 2006 limited with 180000km for $14k. Was a really nice truck.
If there is rust around top of windshield, look closer because it will be worse behind the windshield. It was a lot of labour to fix that.
Trans is sealed unit so make sure that was done at some point. Mine shifted like a dream and had been serviced at 140k km.
Cam seals can leak
Inspect frame
They have an LSD so hopefully diff oil was serviced. Mine chattered slightly, only sometimes, on tight turns from a stop. Changed diff oil, she was good after that.
Leather on driverside cracks where you slide your ass. That was $150-200 to fix i think.
Was a great truck, it sold in 36 hours for the same price i paid 2 years earlier.

 

I do use wiki for a lot of things, but when it comes to spending real money, I'd rather speak to people like folks here. I've had much better luck with forum members from a few different places like this.

 

So as much fun as it sounded it would be, the seller never replied to my contact to him. My guess is that it's sold, and he's not bothered to delete the ad.

It's not quite as exciting as chasing skirts, but it's much safer and quite a bit cheaper.

 

Well - I did finally manage to catch up with this guy, and I know why he can't sell his truck.

-The interior is destroyed - there are black stains all over the leather
-He has zero communication skills
-He was 40 minutes late showing up at the meeting spot

But the worst of it was that he lied to my face. At that point it didn't really matter what the truck was, I wasn't buying it.

But now I've found an even nicer '08...
