if you have a tonneau/shell cover you can register your truck back as car and registration will go down. You cannot remove it however or it's a commercial truck again...

And unlike my home state of Pennsylvania where anything 25 years or older can be registered as an antique and thus be exempted from emissions/safety inspection, a DeLorean will always have to continually pass smog every two years under the current law...

Anything newer than 1976! California is a car enthusiast's nightmare!

Even my uncle, who I would classify as an environmentalist, loves his classic VWs. He lives in Monterey, and his '77 Westfalia camper wouldn't pass smog, so he had to register it as an antique at his brother's home address in Texas!

yep..they want to tax all those electric/hybrid cars since they don't use much gasoline anymore. State has been losing tax money on gasoline so they found a way to tax everyone again :)..it's not much about the environment..it's about lining up their pockets..

A few years back the state of Colorado decided to add a couple "use fees" to registration. We have TABOR here. Prevents state legislature from arbitrarily imposing a tax. CO voters can only do that. TABOR can't prevent state legislature from imposing a "use fee" for example. Cali legislature arbitrary does this sort of thing all the time as you know.

The State of Connecticut, as well as the Commonwealth of Virginia, both impose annual property taxes on vehicles based on the fair market value.

That's what really pisses me off about things like DUI laws and vehicle inspections...

The various states don't give a flying fuck about safety and wellbeing...

It's all about lining their pockets.

A friend of mine got a DUI not because she was actually drunk, but because she happened to be just under a month shy of her 21st birthday...

She was pulled over just because she was a kid driving a $500 hoopty late at night, and blew a .02!

Lost her license for six months and ended up paying about $10,000 in various fees before she got it back!

Pennsylvania gives you the option of 1 or 2 years...

Even better is that unlike California, you don't have to pass an emissions test to register your vehicle!

Here in CO there is a Emissions Test Van that will randomly appear at various locations. You get scanned as you drive by. I believe if you have at least two scans that pass...you dont' have to do an emissions test. There has been one near my work all this week at the freeway on ramp. Drove by it 4 times already. Good to go!

    @matluth

As I said above, Cali and CT both impose annual property taxes on vehicles based on the fair market value...

I met a guy from Connecticut at a swap meet in New Jersey who used a loophole in the system to register his 2001-2002 Chevy Express conversion van in Maine, where registration and taxes are much cheaper, and inspection is only enforced if you actually live in Maine. He told me that he would have had to pay about $200 in property taxes annually on a 15-year old work van that was worth maybe three grand, and he also told me that Connecticut residents are registering their vehicles in Maine in droves because they are fed up with Connecticut's vehicle property taxes and ludicrous annual emissions testing...

For years California residents would go up to Oregon to purchase a vehicle. No sales tax. Naturally, Cali legislators "fixed" that loophole.

A great idea unless....like some...drive a piece a S**t and totally blast the remote sensors with smoke. If the car is registered I think you're not on the road much longer. A good thing too.

    It's a big rip off.
Moonbeam is an idiot. We were already taxed a lot on gas and registration.

What really pisses me off is our horrible roads, yet all the money they collect that is supposed to fix them but it always seems to get diverted to other things.
