CAM SHAFT TOWER SEAL LEAKING ** PLEASE READ***

Yup mine too. It has been 20,000km (12,500miles)since the fix, and still good to go. Knock on wood. It has black sealant. And still runs like the day I drove it off the lot. Love it!

 

what year is yours & do u recall the leaking seal color?

 

My 16 with 31K on it was just diagnosed with the cam tower leak. I didn't even know but at my last oil change the service tech saw some oil underneath the truck (not enough to drip...as I didn't even see it). They want to fix at the next oil change. Sucks but at least they can and will fix it. I can't say the same with my experiance with other brands.

 

What we do is labor intensive. But, yes, the robot that applies the FIPG doesn't use enough. It's a solid fix when we are done. Did you know that factory Toyota FIPG is grey in color, but what we use is black? It's for warranty purposes.

 

This is crazy that guys with 2017's are still having the issue. Has no one decided to check the robot that's not applying enough sealant? Seems like common sense and an easy fix.

 

they need to fire the robot and outsource it to humans

just curious ... my 2016 truck came with black so it seems like not all factory FIPG are grey?!

 

I'm all for that, at least it would be applied correctly and someone is putting an actual eye on it.

 

as I mentioned before my truck came with black seal (FIPG? as noted above. not sure what it stands for) and it looks like it has drip dried like they applied too much sealant ... maybe they are making attempts to solve the problem but it is not a universal fix. idk, different robots, different plants.
are all tundras build in Texas in the same plant or does the engine come from Japan?

 

2015. notice leaking at 30,000km (18,600miles).
It was kind of light brownish sealant I think.
Or maybe it was Light grayish colour lol.

It was grey sealant from the factory, the fix is black sealant. I’ll try to remember to snap a pic tomorrow of the fix. To me, the black sealant look more heavy duty than what was on there previously.

 

yep..had mine done at 59K under warranty. 2012 5.7L.
I don't think they ever fix it.Toyota knows and is willing to fix it. They know a recall or TSB would cost them a lot of money due to the work involved so they just wait for the trucks to show up...

I have black sealant on mine and around 6,000 miles since fix. No leaks and runs as good as before.

 

Another one. Someone else had this happen recently.

 

first instance of a 2017 I hear but I'm not surprised. Toyota most likely still use the same assembly line robots on the 5.7L.

This maybe over simplifying things but based on what I have read so far:

it seems like the black sealant could be the fix!??
also some newer trucks still come with grey sealant (@TRD423 has a 2017 with grey and they fixed it with black)
mine is a 2016 and has a factory black sealant. I quadruple checked the color with a 1000 lumens flash light ... lol

Big question is if any truck is leaking with a black sealant?

yes, I think it had 6 or 9 miles on it. unless someone changed the seal during first 6 miles ... lol

 

I have a 2011 w/67k and just took it to the dealership today. They told me it was going to cost 3200.00 so, I called the number listed on the first comment of this thread. Thank you so much for mentioning the problem with your truck and the number listed with Toyota America. I take my truck back in tomorrow morning to be fixed but a super nice customer service representative at Toyota headquarters got the cost down to 340.00! Super excited!! Thanks again!

Will Toyota fix both sides if only one side is leaking?

 

Now you guys have me all paranoid! I can't really tell exactly what I'm looking at—can anyone tell if I have the black or gray sealant?




Edit: Never mind... I just took a closer look and I'm pretty sure I have the gray sealant. Let's just hope the robot either did a really good job so it lasts forever or a really bad job so it starts leaking under warranty. I don't want to have to start calling Toyota if it happens outside of warranty...

I don't recall seeing any black sealant from the factory, always grey. except @TTund16

 

could be that the only people who are having issues (grey sealant theory) are the ones reporting or posting about it ...
that's why I quadruple check the color to make sure mine is black.
back to one of my other questions, does anyone know if the engines come from Japan in one piece or do they (engine parts) get assembled in the same plant in Texas?

oh wait, since it is Toyota yes ... if it was Ford or Chevy most likely no sides would get fixed!

 

I have a 2013 with 58k miles and I just called Toyota of America to get this issue fixed as mine is leaking pretty bad and they said there is nothing they can do for me. I called my local dealer and spoke with a service advisor and he couldn't help either. Anyone else have this problem with Toyota? There is no way I'm spending $3k to get something fixed that is a defect from the manufacturer.

 

Uh. 5 year 60k. You'e still good warranty. Depending on in service date.

 

Unfortunately mine is only 3 years or 36k.
