New (disappointed) Tundra owner

I knew it was something like that! Had the same thing in my glove box. It’s a loose thing....I was imagining some mounted plug.

 

The white camera connector he is talking about comes in a baggie and its for if you need to disconnect the tailgate...you plug it into the harness after you unplugged the camera. It protects the harness from contamination.

 

I gotta call BS on this. Yes, I don't trust most car sales people any longer due to the fact that over time, I've been burned by them. However, if they flat out lie about something, it's on them, not the OP to trawl the internet looking for a definitive answer on the one thing that the sales rep lied about. I don't cross reference every claim a dealer makes but i will now ask for it in writing. the OP was told he had a tow package and even confirmed it with salesperson's manager. As far as I'm concerned, that's research. These dudes are ultimately paid by toyota, they are representatives for their company and should be held accountable for such. If one of our sales people made commitments to a customer that we couldn't meet, they'd be fired on the spot... It's high time we hold car sales people to those standards too.

You can certainly have that opinion, but it isn't very hard to look at the build documents or the large sticker on the window for a brand new truck and see that there is/ is not a tow package. I would think the OP has the tow package because he says he has the hitch receiver, pin hook-ups and additional fluid coolers. Bottom line if he knew he needed a trailer brake why didn't he look and make sure it had a trailer brake?

Just saying I feel some people blame others when maybe they could have done more to make sure he wasn't getting what he wanted and was told he was getting. If the sales rep was fully aware there was no tow package and there is in fact no tow package and he told them there was then that is a huge problem.

And I may be wrong, but pretty sure dealerships are privately owned and the sales reps are not paid by Toyota, but rather the dealership. Hence why Toyota is telling him to work it out with said dealership.

 

Honestly, I am disgusted with dealerships and their sales people, I hate them all. I've bought new cars from Ford, GMC, Chevy, Infiniti, Mazda and Toyota - the sales people are hollow shells whose only job is to be the middleman between the buyer and the finance manager (don't forget the smirk and useless sales pitch)...it's ridiculous. They *usually* offer no real insight to the vehicle, no advice on what to buy or what not to buy and basically suck at their jobs. One brand stands out, one I should have purchased instead of the Ford Fusion that I currently can't sell to save my life: Subaru (sales person was, coincidentally, the only saleswoman I've ever dealt with at a dealership). She drove a Subaru, knew their culture and most importantly, knew their product line and was enthusiastic about it. So I don't fault the OP for being sold something that didn't work for him - the salesperson should have listened to the intended use and recommended the proper drive-train and features to sell him in the first place.

Side note: my recent Toyota experience was a mixed bag: I went in knowing what specific truck I wanted and the first sales associate was an old-school, hard-sell, won't shut the F up about the towing capacity (after I told him I wasn't towing anything), the roll-down rear window (after I rolled it up and down with him in the truck), the Entune features (after I told him we had a Highlander and know the features)...the second guy was much better but had only been on the job for 2 weeks and didn't know a thing about the features of the truck. End rant, sorry...

It’s sad the6 misled you and it sucks more that a couple hundred out of pocket will rectify BUT you will get better results going aftermarket. Don’t let 1 douche salesman ruin your awesome truck

 

Man, sorry about your terrible experience. As a rule of thumb, that’s why I always do thorough research on a truck before buying it.

Don’t feel bad, I’m the idiot that went and bought a 4.6 without looking at the 5.7 or even knowing there was a difference LOL

I’d say trade it in for another one with a tow package if you tow a lot. If not, just get an aftermarket controller.

 

Sorry to hear about your issue. It sounds like the dealer is either incompetent or was BSing you to get the sale (most likely the latter). If you want to go to battle and make a stink you could probably get the dealer to install an aftermarket brake controller for you. Otherwise, you could just chalk it up as a learning experience that you can never trust what a dealer/salesman verbally tells you. Get it all in writing or tell them to show you on the sticker where it says there's a brake controller.

I agree with others that bringing legal action is going to be a waste of time and money as it will just be a he-said she-said situation. Good luck!

 

They are privately owned but paid by Toyota to sell toyotas.

 

Small claims is your best bet....costs nothing or little to file. Even if they could win most dealerships wouldn’t risk the loss vs 500$

He's new... Hasnt figured out that this is more important than work yet. Let's give him some slack, it's only been 6 hours...

 

It sucks to have a bad sales experience but can’t let that ruin a killer truck

 

All i saw was a hitch, tow/haul button on dash and a brake controller installed. And i had the right truck! After i bought it, i realized it was Silver. SOB, i hate silver!

 

Did the dealer tell you it was white, the fastest color?

 

I didn't think it was possible to be so oblivious, but my father-in-law bought what he thought was an AWD Rav4. When he drove it over to show us I asked why he didn't get an AWD... His reaction was pretty hilarious.

 

How does someone go 6 hours without looking at Tundras.com?

 

Can someone just adopt the newbie, invite him to your house, hook up the part, and then watch him spend new money on more new mods...???

I would if I knew how to.....

.....then go back to dealer and negotiate half the bill.

 

I want to thank everyone for their replies/insight. After reading all of them I want to clear up miscommunication(s) on my part and add a little more information. After realizing the truck didn't come with a factory brake controller I did order a Tekonsha P3 and the correct cable from etrailer to hook it up (in). I looked at videos at the etrailer website and Youtube videos to find the plug and play connector in my Tundra. I looked to the lower left behind the foot plate-nothing, behind the lower right center dash-nothing, even under the center dash again nothing. I can't find any connector like the one I saw in the videos and pictures on Youtube and etrailer. The following pics are of what I found. The first pic is of two connectors behind the lower center right dash and the two white connectors are way up on the other side of the steering column. The two white connectors are similar to what I saw in my research, but the Tekonsha cables (one which was mentioned in a reply to my original post) won't fit either one-I even had two other people try it just to make sure it wasn't me. On closer inspection the hole slots on the white Tundra connectors are different then the pins on the Tekonsha cable as well. I tried two different Tekonsha cables just to make sure. I cannot find the correct plug/play connector anywhere in the Tundra. Thanks again for the help.

 

I'm sure someone can and will take some pictures for you to help you out. I hope this gets resolved quickly.

 

OP.... can you confirm if you have a 4.6 or 5.7 engine? As previously stated all 5.7 for 2018 are supposed to come with the controller installed. I have a 2018 on order and per the brochure It better have a tow package included. I hope someone helps you find the plug!

Well this is the problem. The salesmen should have known better but not to be an ass, you really should have done some research before buying a vehicle for a specific purpose.

 

@Pudge , would you know the part number for the toyota harness, I tried to purchase the one on Amazon and it won't let me put it in my cart because it say it will not fit my 2017 tundra, is there another one . Any advise will be grateful.
