Dynamic Drive TSS adjustment Before ProGrille Swap

Good day fellow Tundra brothers! Want to introduce myself. Im new to this forum but not new to toyota or tundras this is my second tundra the first was a 2008 reg cab 4wd sr5 and it was an awesome truck hence why I just purchased another.

Here is the issue im having with the new dynamic cruise control. I usually drive quite a bit on the intrastate and interstate and the truck does great on adjusting speed to the vehicle in front of me. But when a vehicle goes off of an exit ramp and slows down and I am cruising ahead in the right lane the dynamic cruise control slams on the brakes and adjusts to that vehicles speed which has almost caused vehicles behind me to rear end the truck on the interstates. This to me is a safety flaw and almost has me wanting to disable the feature all together. Please provide your input and what you think I should do about it. Thanks.

 

I was driving on a highway a couple days ago (not the interstate). A car in front of me went into the turn lane to make a right turn, I guess similar to what you describe just a lot slower, and the truck starts yelling for me to brake. I wasn't using cruise control but I wondered if I was would it have slammed on the brakes. That would have been bad...

That might be something Toyota will have to address. I don' know how that works but if it is a design flaw or something the more 2018s that hit the road the complaints will start rolling in.

 

Yeah that is not a safe situation. I was traveling at 70mph on cruise posted interstate speeds and it slammed on the brakes and slowed me down to 45mph the truck behind me nearly slammed into the back of the truck. At this point im disabling dynamic cruise control and contacting the dealership. I think this is a huge safety flaw. I think if it was a semi truck he wouldnt have been able to swerve or slow down.

 

I wonder if I should report my thing as well. The truck never actually hit the brakes or anything, just alerted me.

I just thought it was a fluke one time thing. Truck got confused for a second, you know. It was raining too.

How was the weather for you? Or has it happened to you multiple times?

 

It has happened twice and since then I quit using the cruise control. Weather was clear semi cloudy skies was daytime from 8 to 12 time period so it was light out for viewpoint

 

Have you adjusted the sensitivity on the pre collision system. I believe it takes over dynamic cruise in panic stop situations as described.

 

I knew there would be some reports like this. I am not a fan and think it is dangerous.....I prefer to drive my own truck

 

Yes I have adjusted the sensitivity brother. Thank you. What boggles me is that in both situations it was at different exit ramps and the vehicles were atleast 20 feet traveling to the north east of my truck

 

Same thing (as described by the OP) happened to me a few times, I just briefly step on the accelerator which overrides the auto function or move to the left lane. Nothing new to me since my last two F-150s did the same thing, actually worst because they slammed on the brakes from the reflections of one of those shiny aluminum semi trailer while I was passing.

Ford found a fix with new software and realigning the sensor........Toyota will find one as well. I still like the adaptive cruise but know its limitations.

 

Thank you for your insight brother. The dynamic cruise is new to me and toyota needs to address the issue. Both times the vehicles left my line of sight and were atleast 25 to my east and ahead. I turned the sensitivity down to two and the issue happened again.

 

FYI, my 18 Tundra is the third vehicle I have owned with auto cruise. The behavior you described happens the same on the subaru I had, not quite as much on my wife’s Volvo.

I still highly value the auto cruise control and auto stop, so I have learned to adjust a little. When a radar locked car I’m following pulls off the road, I usually just power through it by giving a little gas, which tells the system you are in control. It may still warn you, but it doesn’t jab on the brakes.

I haven't used it on the interstate yet. So, if you are cruising and switch into the left lane to pass a car you are following will it maintain speed and pass them?

Like if they slow down and you switch lanes to pass.

 

If you ´come up on a slower vehicle and have the adaptive cruise set the truck will either just coast or apply the brakes to adjust to the speed of the vehicle in front of you. Once you switch into another lane your truck will automatically accelerate back up to the speed you had set until another slower vehicle is in front of you. It is really a need feature but does have its limitations.

 

I have the adaptive cruise on my wife's 2017 Highlander and I don' t care for that style cruise control due to the same issues you all have mentioned. I have found that when you turn cruise control on to hold the on button for three or four seconds. That allows regular cruise to come on without having to have the adaptive features. Give a try and see if that doesn't work any better for you

 

Right, that is what it is supposed to do. But I wonder if it will. I mean it's not supposd to slam on brakes when someone goes in the turn lane, but sometimes it does...apparently.

 

I have not had any problems with mine. There is a small graphic in the center dash that shows you if it has radar lock on a car in front of you. After you switch lanes (away from a lane with car you were pacing) it shows open road ahead, and no longer reacts to the car in the original lane. Nothing is perfect, but so far it works impressively well.

 

Wife's Lexus also has adaptive cruise. It is not perfect and does require some learning on what it does and does not do. At first I hated it. Now I am learning to like it. We must remember that Toyota had to design this system to work in a wide variety of circumstances. For example, imagine you were on a large sweeping turn and the cruise radar sensor lost "sight " of the car in front of you. That could trigger the cruise to return to your preset faster speed. That also could be a safety issue. Therefore the radar must sense a wider area than just your lane. I have also had it slow down when it was not warranted. I simply applied a mild pressure on the throttle and maintained my desired speed. I have learned to spot situations where it may slow down. Is it perfect? No. However, the auto braking may have saved my wife an accident when a car in front of her slammed on the brakes without warning or visible reason.

It sounds like the self driving features are dangerous.

I prefer the cruise control on my 17. I set the speed I want and not dictated by the car in front of me whose texting and keeps speeding up/slowing down. If I need to speed up or slow down I can still do that without using the gas or brake pedals and using the steering wheel controls instead.

 

Ares, aren't you the guy that figured out how to locate the TSS radar on the TRD Pro grille? Not sure if this happened before or after, but do you think this has anything to do with it? Perhaps the sensor is looking to one side slightly rather than straight ahead?

 

This is before the trd pro grille swap. I just turned the sensitivity down even with having it behind the plastic. I mean this sensor is RADAR which can project out over a hundred feet. The sensitivity just needed adjusted

 

I think the TSS+P features make driving safer for the most part as long as one doesn't totally rely on them. All the stuff can be turned off, I keep all my nannies on though.

 

I gotta say I’m glad I got a 2014, I would hate those new safety systems although some might disagree, I’ve done perfectly fine without them but hey at least Toyota is “slowly” integrating new things to the tundra.
