Yeah! I'm pumped he's so into it haha. He filmed me riding dirt bikes once, and now he's all "I need to change the angles here and do this next time, we need to go back soon!" Ok!
There's also a section on Gold Crown Rd where it's easy to hit highway speeds, he's going to park it and film the rest of us through that for some cool high speed video! Going to have to slow it down a bit though since his drone only hits 40mph lol

I'm not that technical when it comes to Drones, GoPro vids etc. I know you could spend hours fine tuning every last second of a video.

Nor am I, I'll either be too impatient and rush it or take my time and do it right which would take forever for me to finish.

So waited till i got home so i could have more then one window open. Searched flights and hotels on priceline and as of now to stay at the Hyatt in Mission Bay and flights with taxes/fees its about $2300 for 6 nights.

If i drive my truck about $750 fuel cost round trip. If we leave mid AM about 17 hour drive each way...unless I get antsy.
If we take the wife's Camry it would be about $315 fuel cost. Leave same time in the car make it in about 15..maybe 14 hours.

Thats a bit spendy but when we went to Disney and stayed on property I am pretty sure the hotel and Disney package was around $3300 and that was only four days.

Hmmm guess I will run some numbers by the boss and see what she thinks.

Bed bars and an RTT would be cheaper than a hotel :boink: :stirthepot:

Wow, it really puts mpg into perspective when you look at the numbers like that. $750 vs $315

Maybe an anniversary or birthday coming up so you can double dip on the trip purpose?

Funny story...May 22 and 23rd is our 10 year. We got married at the court house in SD before i went to Iraq. Then got married in the church a year later.

One night while drinking way to much a good friend of mine decided it was a great idea to drunk dial the gf's. His was in Texas and mine In Oregon. Well we were watching Anchor Man and he sang the Sky Rockets in flight song. Then he promised my soon to be wife a trip to Hawaii...well ten years later we still haven't been. A friend of mine was stationed there but just got out. I have no desire to go to Hawaii but we both love SD. The only reason I would consider a super nice hotel for that long is that may make up for the Hawaii thing finally lol.

Plus Mission Bay puts us right at the wave runner rental place, not to far from Sea World...and not to far from the airport. Guess we will see what she thinks....and what happens with taxes.

That looks like it was a fun, fast drive! And not too technical for my 2WD TRD. Unless there was something scary around the corner in that section by the rock wall? I'd like to know that route; looks like a perfect (nearby) trip I could drag the fambly on....

Edit: it's always best to be first tho-!

Ahhhh the only downside to drunk dialing, you may have signed a check your ass can't cash

    Too funny.

Well if it works out we'll put a meet together!

It was a blast! I'm 2wd, and there were a couple other 2wd trucks on that run. You'll for sure earn yourself some pinstripes on Berdoo, but Old Dale and Gold Crown would be a blast with no real fear of damage.

We took Berdoo Canyon which drops you off on Geology Tour Rd in Joshua Tree NP, drive through the park for ~20-25 miles to Old Dale Rd, turn onto Gold Crown Rd and camp off in a secret location we call Chilitown.

Does your truck have a locker?

Not yet but it's on my list. As well as a winch, so I can be responsible about irresponsible decisions. Do you, and did you use it on this trip?

My birthday's comin' up and I've hinted hard that I don't care as much about dinner out or even a distillery tasting tour, as I want the fam to join me in an adventurous all-day or overnight outing in the BFT. No matter that I prefer to go as technical as I can with a 2WD, this looks pretty close to ideal for what they would not just tolerate but actually enjoy.

I do, but the TRD OR Tacomas came with a locker stock :p

I used it for a couple offshoots, one was a rock ledge where you start in sand and need some momentum to get up and over it, the other was a sandy hill climb. My 4x4 buddies did them so I had to show off haha.
Both of these two spots can be avoided, and a friend with a mostly stock 2016 Tacoma made it 2wd with an open diff.

Well then, so far this is the best option I've seen for the intro trip I have in mind. My honey loves desert, and I like that Joshua Tree at least has stuff to look at
(I'm more of a streams and mountains kinda gal. :angrygirl:)

Can you snap a pic of the route on a map? If not, no problem, I'll figure it out using topo and forestry maps. I just figure, if you can show me the route and those off-shoots, I'll be confident I'm taking us somewhere we can get into and back from.)

I don't exactly have a map, but here are some locations to help make it easier

    The start to Berdoo -
    https://www.google.com/maps/place/B...ef9061daf027d8!8m2!3d33.806922!4d-116.1783276

Berdoo will turn into Geology tour rd -
    https://www.google.com/maps/@33.8409707,-116.0641637,1459m/data=!3m1!1e3
    Screen Shot 2017-12-27 at 5.36.44 PM.jpg

You'll take that into JT and to park road where you will turn right
    https://www.google.com/maps/place/3...d09a92a864406!8m2!3d34.0061152!4d-116.0847838

park road goes to Pinto Basin and you follow that for awhile until you turn left here on Old Dale
    https://www.google.com/maps/place/O...51407df1536ce!8m2!3d33.8440015!4d-115.7503696

    Screen Shot 2017-12-27 at 5.51.17 PM.jpg

Keep following that until it gets confusing and it's gold crown/old dale
    https://www.google.com/maps/@33.9799499,-115.6907297,1456m/data=!3m1!1e3

    Screen Shot 2017-12-27 at 5.53.02 PM.jpg

You'll take that up and over a mountain which puts you on gold crown. from there you're outside the park and on BLM land and free to camp where you please.

I can share the coordinates and location to where we camp over PM, but I don't want to put that on the open interwebz.

Also, gold crown will take you all the way to the 62 where you will exit here -
    Screen Shot 2017-12-27 at 5.58.14 PM.jpg

There are a lot of cool mines out there to check out. Ive only been to two, which I can't find on the map at the moment.

We have so many people in CA, and so many natural resources, I don't mind regulations to curb reckless waste or profiteering by big business at the expense of the rest of us. I'm beyond pissed. (Because I imagine that, with or without permitting, this will continue.) Thanks for giving my blood pressure a boost. Gggrrrrrrr!! :angrygirl:

My buddy who grew up in Idyllwild shared that, guess it hits them pretty hard :(

I'll probably be there around 7-7:30, I'll give you a closer ETA once I'm home and about to head out the door. Traffic can be a bit finky, at least it's been light this week with most people still on vacation

@Sunnier and whomever else may be interested in a brewery meet tonight, changed it up just a little:

Pacific Islander Beer Co is doing $1 tacos and having some comedians tonight, going to be there until 8pm, Burning Beard from 8pm to 10pm.
Might actually make it a little earlier being that there will be food, so I won't be eating at home. Probably still around 7 though.

    Lol oh you guys
We just did a last minute spur of the moment trip to Vegas :). We just decided to chill and get away. Some drinks, a few hours on the black jack tables and good food  we've gone hard in Vegas a million times, we're so old now we can't even stay up past midnight anymore

SD is just a little far for me :(. I'll be in SD for comic con :headbang:

Hey, from my perspective, all vacations are good vacations! I doubt you're old ;)but, yeah, I recall that at about 30, my decisions started including adequate time for sleep....

We outta find some place mild to wheel and drink beer in not-too-far-East Riverside. Temecula maybe. Would that seem a do-able drive, Marty? I ran my plans for Joshua Tree by the fambly and, after some discussion, agreed that will be best for an overnight, and not a day-trip, as it's close to 3 hours travel time from home. As is Big Bear.

My kid is about old enough for Comic Con and I look forward to taking him... but challenging to get tickets, fo those of us who haven't gone year to year (with the repeat purchase opportunity). I take it you attend every year? Several in family do-- costumes and all!

Yeah, I was looking forward to joining you all day-- was very pleased to have an opportunity so near my home, and had my growler all taped over and ready for take-away brew. I was pretty bummed when I couldn't make it work. But I didn't want to be all rushed and flustered, meeting people for the first time. I appreciate you keeping us posted. I'll most likely make it another time you meet this far East, although I understand that's probably not a common occurrence-?

Hey, I'd love to hear what you thought about those places. That Burning Beard Brewery had great reviews, but I haven't yet visited either of these.
