Opinions on false beadlocks

I'm not one on shine, and these bother me because they're not functional. Question is...do I just paint the false beadlock holes, OR do I actually go through the trouble and thread them to make them functional??? Would the later screw with the integrity of the wheel?

 

Send your wheels to OMF and have them convert them to real beadlock wheels.

 

I'd just paint them. One of my pet peeves is pretend aesthetics.

OMF only makes the best bead lock wheels around! Here is a set I had them make me for my golf cart. They also take existing wheels and machine them to add on a true beadlock, last I checked they can do most any wheel up to 20"

You make a good point. I may just get the 1G3 touch up paint, and paint them.

 

If you know how to weld, there are kits out there where you weld on a drilled lip and mount up that way.

The only problem with that is they would be illegal in some states. Check your local state regs before you go that route. I'm talking about actually bead locking your tires to rims.

 

Just like my XD Monster fake bead lock/ bolts. That's why when it's new tire time it will also be new FN rim time.

 

I'm with you on the monster thing. Mine came with them and they are for sure not my favorite.

I highly doubt that to many police officers would ticket you for running a true beadlock wheel, especially with all the fake beadlocks out there.

 

They have good reason to though. Let's say you're in a high speed chase and they throw spike strips and you have your brand new beadlock wheels on, yes they will puncture but they will not shred because of the way the wheel is designed to keep bead even at stupid low air pressure.

That's why they are illegal. All because some dumb fuck ruined it for everyone else.

 

For me, when I look at that wheel, I don't think about beadlock wheel at all. To me, these are simply accent pieces. I guess that's why they design different wheels for different people If I were to go with black wheels (I almost went with black Ballistic Jester), I would go with black wheels with accents. Otherwise, they just look like a black blob from 3 feet out (ok, not a bit further out than 3 feet, but . . . ). Different wheels for different tastes.

If the accent pieces bother you, try dipping them. Then if you change your mind, you could always go back.

 

Probably has more to do with the real beadlocks not being DOT approved than it does with someone being involved in a high speed chase

You might be surprised. Plenty of statutes. Some LEO's look for that. I would. "not street legal" means not street legal. Insurance investigators sure would have a field day if there was an accident. Illegal is "illegal" and I would not recommend any one here on Tundras.com to do something illegal. Huge lawsuit issues in a worst case scenario. If whatever you are using is not DOT street approved = Illegal. My younger brothers are both in the fraud, claim adjuster business with major insurance companies. Farmers and Mercury/Century. Illegal beadlocks in a street accident would make their day. Slam Dunk. Just sayin.

Going with it too. No shortage of statutes. DOT regs to start with. Previously on this forum I caught hell for not getting my Bull Shift "Safe Stop" flash for any potential liability reasons. Lets be consistent here on this forum on possible liability concerns. I guarantee there are LEO's out there that look for illegal bead locks. Insurance investigators will if you had beadlocks and caused a death.

I plasti dipped my chrome XD Monster "bolts" for the blackout look. I had doubts about plasti dip, but Sean and Brian convinced me to try it. Plasti dip is way more durable than what I expected. My rim "bolts" are not showing any wear at all with the plasti dip after 3 months or more. I think I used 3 coats. False bead locks are "in" right now. I just prefer the all black look.

The link you provided was one of the best explanations of the illegality of deadlocks I could find. In short, beadlocks are not illegal. "Not street leal" means simply that manufacturers are washing their hands from any mess in case of a law suit involving a street-accident. The website even have a bounty on anyone who can provide any law prohibiting deadlock (or ticket) because they couldn't find one. The worst case scenario is the law suit case that you mentioned. But that applies to lift, heavy bumper, any performance mods that you have on your truck that other lawyers can sink their claw into.

 

You are right. Beadlocks are not illegal per se. That's why most LEO's won't/can't issue citations. There still of course remains the liability issue. A LEO could note on an accident report that non-DOT compliant rims/tires were found on the offending vehicle and the accidents' cause was due to a failed non-DOT beadlock rim. I doubt this happens very much since most folks don't run beadlocks on the street for a reason. There are a few DOT compliant beadlocks out there. Even though a person may not/can't get ticketed for running beadlocks, if you are running non-DOT beadlocks and one should fail and cause a serious accident, the repercussions would be much much more severe than a simple ticket. Worst case scenario then could mean you lose everything because you got sued for a couple mil and your insurance company wouldn't cover due to the insureds negligence. I got this info straight from my youngest brother who has been with Farmers for over 20 yrs, the last 15 in claims. Farmers would not cover if an accident was caused by "non-compliant" aftermarket part failure. He said it actually happens more than you would think with all the aftermarket goodies out there and that you need to update your insurer any time you change/add/modify your vehicle. Good advice.He kept bringing up "due diligence".

 

That's just the way it was described to me.
