What' a good radar detector that won't break the bank? I normally don't speed too bad but tonight I passed a Ford that was hogging the slow lane, we were going up a steep hill and after I passed him I stayed on it. Met a cop in the other lane (after dark so I couldn't tell) and got hit doing 83 in a 55. Wife's talked about one for a few years just never got one. What are some things to look at and consider when buying one? Thanks.

With instant on and laser radar in use these days, radar detectors are really just "you got a ticket" alarms.

Here’s the thing..radar is a thing of the past. Many new patrol vehicles aren’t equipped with them.
When I’m out, we use laser. A good accurate reading of up to 2k feet. (Anything past will expand the laser so it’s not as accurate) Before your radar detector picks it up, you’re already locked in

^^^true.....that's why you upgrade to laser jammers. Military has been using the technology for years. Blinder makes one of the best laser jammers out there. There are several you tube vids out there that show how effective the Blinder jammers are. Forget radar detectors and go state of the art with laser jammers if you like to speed..http://www.blinder.net/ [IMG]

    From the Manufacturer,
Install BLINDER And you'll get a complete protection against all police laser guns, so that you can drive without worry. The intelligent Laser Jammer is so advanced that no police laser gun can break through guaranteed, or BLINDER USA WILL PAY YOUR TICKET!

That may be true, but not everywhere. I drove about 300 miles yesterday, all Interstate. My radar detector went off no less than 7 times, all Ka band, and always followed by Sheriff or GHP sitting on an overpass or on the shoulder a mile or so down the road.

Also, radar can be turned on/off with one switch...my other buddy will use it when large groups of vehicles approach and then back off when there isn’t anyone around.

I have an Escort Redline, on the pricey side but very good range so even if they turn the radar on and off I still pick up the Ka as long as there is traffic in front of me. They also use laser around here but to use laser the cop needs to be stationary to aim it and the air has to be clear (no precipitation or fog/smoke), I only see this in the busy areas during rush hour. One will be setup with the laser and 2 or 3 to write tickets

I have an Escort Max 360, My Daughter has my old Passport 8500ix, and my son has my old Escort Max. I haven’t seen laser in NC, Mostly KA, and every once in a while K. Using a radar detector in combination with Waze has kept us ticket free for many years. That being said, I normally stay at 9 or less over the limit unless traffic dictates something different. There is a lot of good information at radardetectors.org or radarbusters.com. I also have an old V1 which was great at the time. The key, in my opinion, is how well does the detector eliminate false alerts. Many of the lower priced detectors will signal on anything, to the point where you don’t trust the detector. At that point it is useless. There seem to be some good deals on 1 or 2 year old models out there. As long as they are updated with current software, they will do the job and wont break the bank. Good Luck! And Merry Christmas!

City/county Moar traffic stops for a summons (citations) are 13-15 over.
School zone and work zones are 5-6 over.
Hell, when I’m out on a ride on a freeway we’ll stop/cite/release on 20+ above the posted spoed limit. Last week, before ending our shift we hit 78/55- 28 over. Quick citation and on our way.

Varies where you’re at. IIRC, this one was 3 points- pay early and its reduced. It’s not like CA where you have traffic school and such.

Also depends on where you are located. Ive read in CA they only uses Ka band. You can get away with a cheap radar detector and turn all bands off but Ka and be on your way. no need to pay for gps and bsm. If you get hit with laser while speeding.....toast no matter what detector you have.

A decent fool proof laser jammer can cost up to a grand. A price point considerably higher than radar. In theory you would need both radar and laser. A very pricey combo indeed.

I use the Waze app. I've noticed the police are moving more. I imagine they would look at the same app, and move a mile or so once their location is reported by someone.
