Took my Tundra in for an oil change yesterday, first time since I purchased it 2 months ago. The business changed the oil, I watched them add oil, a lot of oil. I go to leave and they walk over to the engine area and pull the dip stick and it shows the oil line at the bottom mark. I said we need to add more oil it looks like. The guy agrees and then puts in a 1/3 of a quart. Pull the dip stick and it shows halfway between the two marks. The manager comes over and says thats enough oil. He said the Tundra's don't like too much oil. I disagreed with him but left it the way it is.
Do you guys run the oil to the top mark on the dip stick?
How many quarts of oil does the 5.7 require?

Without going out to my garage, I'm pretty sure anywhere between the two marks while warmed up and on level ground is good to go, as is with most vehicles. That's scary to have to babysit a shop changing your oil.

I just had mine done at the dealer. The 2 techs didnt communicate and they each put oil in it. Big problems. Was headed out of town the next day and stopped at a shop in a little town. Found out the problem. Praying that my 14 is not trashed

7.9 quarts is what the 5.7 calls for. I have an 06 4.7 and it holds 7 quarts. Puts it right to the full mark.

    NOT GOOD.
...and why the 2 techs? 1 to hold the oil filter, the other to screwed it on?

    Bullshit.

Before I bought my truck, I met with the service manager and asked to choose my tech. The dealership assigns a tech to the truck and is the only tech that works on it. ( For the life of the truck). I choose a master tech who loves my truck like its his own. Plus, I ALWAYS tip my tech. For any, and every service. It goes a long way to know you're appreciated when working on someone's vehicle.

I've been going to my local Grease Monkey for years. I'm friends with the owner. The guy is a total professional and expects the same from his techs. Only one tech is assigned to do my oil change. My truck capacity info is already stored in their computer from my first oil change. I spend a few more dollars than the dealer but my windows get cleaned, interior vacuumed, and I always get the correct amount of Mobil-1 and professional courtesy. It's never a good idea to have two techs work on a vehicle at the same time. Never goes well. Sometimes real bad in your case. I always personally hand my tech a $10 bill . I'm tired of fooking around with my own oil changes. I actually enjoy going to my Grease Monkey and I'm supporting a local small family owned business that cares.

I do my own oil changes (Toyota tech) I'm extremely picky about my fluid levels in all of my vehicles. It has to be perfect. I'm the same with customers vehicles. I just like doing it right.

    Biggest bs I've ever heard!

Even 1/2 quart of oil multiply by thousands of cars saves the "Business" a lot of $ ...

Btw, the car will be fine at half mark and since it is new, it won't be burning any oil but you may have to check the oil level more frequently just in case ... or you can top it off!

"If tundra's don't like too much oil", why they come full from factory?

I just did mine a few hours ago. 8qts and I’m a little bit less then 1/2 way between dots. But my driveway isn’t 100% level so I’ll check it again tomorrow somewhere flat.

Also the amount you need to add clearly depends on how long you let it drain. I open my fullmoto valve and go do something else for 10 minutes. Then check on it before closing it.

When I was a lube tech many moons ago I had a “helper” basically filled out the paperwork, made the next service sticker and helped inspect for common issues. They payed us spiffs on upsale maintenance. We brought in maybe 100 hrs of service a month. Not bad at all for the dealership. They went from scheduled oil changes to no appointment necessary and 1/2 the time to do it in plus that extra maintenance. You don’t need a degree in math to see that pencils out.

    Sutter,
do oil changes yourself. unless you are physically limited due to no tools or space. oil changes on these trucks are so easy. skid plate off, drain the housing and pan, reinstall all the crap. add oil and you're done. literally all you need is 3 sockets.

I will bet that you will do a better job DIY than any "oil lube techs". no one takes better care of your stuff than you do.
Ive done oil changes on the ground, or with the truck on four squares of 2x12's, there is plenty of room. lots of info in tech section over at tundratalk

I've been doing my own oil changes since my first truck... 57 Dodge in 1970. I don't feel like messing with all the bs now. My oil lube tech does just fine. I dropped the the giant ass starter off that 57 Dodge truck. Rebuilt the solenoid, got and installed new brushes for the motor. I rebuilt the generator too. Back then you could get rebuilt kits for most anything. Hell, I rebuilt a 650 quad Holley for my 283 Vette engine I swapped into a Jeep my sophomore year. I'd still do that again. Was fun. Nothing fun to do on modern trucks anymore.
