Hey all, I have about 6500 miles on my 17’ 4x4. From a complete stop when accelerating, I feel a bump right after the trans shifts from 1st to 2nd gear. Anyone else experience this and know what it is? Thanks for the help. Guessing it’s the slip yoke maybe?

I have just over 3,000 and when I go from a stop and then back off from the accelerator I have experienced the same thing. I do not think anything is wrong just something that happens when certain conditions are right in the drivetrain.

Does it happen every time? If not, it may just be the tranny catching or abs sensor

For me it is just once and a while and like you said figured just a sensor or something just freaks out when specific conditions happen to be present.

yeah, mine bumps every once in a while. Sometimes it's more noticeable than others like when I stop and boom i feel it. Almost raises my heart rate, but after driving a mile or so with no problems or foreign feels/noises, i forget about it.

Yup, I have 2017 CM SR5 and I've noticed it happens when I decelerate every once in a while. Scared me at first

I think what you're talking about is just a little bit of play in the drivetrain.. i wouldnt call what i experience i bump though.. its just the AT upshifting when you give a little gas from coasting or when it already downshifted.

I've noticed when I slow to about 5mph then accelerate it bumps a bit, but I believe it's trying to start in second gear. Doesn't happen from a full stop, though.

Isn't the drive train warrantee to 60k?

Mine does it randomly from a stop. Depends on the throttle input, if I get down on it I don’t feel it. If I moderately accelerate I feel it. It also seems to be effected by the incline of the road. It never does it while turning. I also notice it slowing down, like when I pull in my garage which is uphill a little. I’ll give the gas a bump to get up the hill and when I hit the brakes once in the garage it does it sometimes. From what I’ve read it seems to be from the slip yoke in the middle of the driveshaft. Just wondering if it may be out of spec and needs taking in or if it’s just normal for it to be that way.

Does it happen at 15mph? If so, probably abs sensor.

I think its the LSD because I've noticed some slip where the light never come on or just blinked.

    Maybe a systems test?

After paying more attention the past week, it only does it when cold. After driving a few miles, it goes away. I'm convinced it's something to do with the driveshaft.

It’s probably the transmission fluid just warming up. When it’s at operating temp, it will shift smoother. Same goes for my Corolla.

Just purchased used 2015 Tundra 1794 Edition 4x4 w/ 72,000 miles over the summer and have also been noticing this "bump" "late shift" "delayed" type of jolt behavior, from 1st to 2nd, when the truck is cold. Located here in Southern California, I only drive 10 miles to work and 95% of the time the truck is not in any extreme temperatures - with that being said I feel this "bump" from 1st to 2nd daily on my drive to work, it's really annoying and makes the transmission feel clumsy for that first bit of driving. I'm coming from a 2003 Tacoma that shifted like butter.

(when the truck is cold) If you accelerate really slow, you don't feel it. If you accelerate really fast, you only kind of feel it.. If you accelerate at a "normal" rate of speed - YOU FEEL THIS BUMP :(

For a tech to really notice this "bump" from 1st to 2nd you will have to drop your truck off the night before they perform the test drive. I've taken mine in twice now and they "can't feel anything"... because the truck is already up to ideal operating temps ... . So my THIRD time bringing the truck in I'll leave it over night, and yes, I feel they will tell me exactly what I already know... something about "getting up to optimal temps etc" ...

If anyone has figured this out let us know! Other than that, for the time I guess I'll accept it's kind of annoying to drive for the first bit of the ride hahahah

I don't think it's a real problem just a heavy duty trans shifting ... I feel a bump sometimes but when I am uphill at a stop sign and then start moving again sometimes it feels like it wants to take off and there is quick and short surge (bump?) and then back to normal ... Like someone said maybe it is still in 2nd gear (California rolling vs. full stop) and then changes its mind and shifts to 1st.

In your case (72K miles) if it's doing it all the time maybe time for fresh trans fluid. Unless you have the car history.

    Random thought,
Try greasing the u-joints and tell me if the problem persists.

I notice something similar if I go too long between greasing u-joints. I think they went away from jerks on the MY19.

    Worth the 10min to try.

I felt the 1-2 bump tonight with moderate throttle leaving a stoplight.

I've got fresh fluid in my trans and it's at the correct level. By all other means I think my truck and transmission is in fantastic shape. I don't think it's a problem at all.
Could it be axle wrap? Maybe. Don't think so, though.

Add another one (a '21 here) to this list. Upon startup the VERY FIRST shift from 1-2 has a noticeable thump that I can feel in my foot. However, after that... Nothing. Feel nothing at even the first stopsign I see about 75 yards away.

I am wondering if it's normal, but it certainly makes a guy scratch his head on a new rig.

Are you sure it's not the ABS self check?

Pretty positive. :notsure: I know that one! I remember it being an odd noise on my Tacoma when I first got it.

I suppose it's possible, but unlikely! Suppose I could kill the ABS to test that theory though.

Mine does the same thing, and its not the same as what you feel on the Tacoma. I had an 18 Taco and this thump is different that what I had on the Taco. I think it is the ABS like others have said.

I haven't noticed anything like this on mine but it seems to hold gears longer when I first get going, maybe to help avoid the thump. Maybe they changed the shift behaviour for 2021 looking for better fuel economy? I wonder if your dealership would do anything useful if you brought it in.

Okay at least I'm not losing it. Yeah, it's definitely a more physical response. However, the ABS check seems like a logical thought given that there's nothing here aside from that very first shift. Appreciate the input.
Well... With the ringer that this poor truck will ultimately go through the fuel economy is the least of my concerns. If what is occurring isn't indicative of premature wear or failure I'll be a happy camper here.

bump or thump or clunk or a jolt? :D

I called my observation in post #16 a "bump" but to be clear it doesn't make any sound when it does that. Maybe I should have called it a jolt instead. I only feel a little jolt and sometimes only at a stop sign (read my post #16) and going uphill.

Do you guys hear a sound when this happens?

Based on descriptions, sounds like what I calla 'firm' shift.

I would much rather have a 'firm' 1-2 than a squishy one!!

What say everyone, firm shifts or not?

just got back from the Toyota dealer today about this issue. This is the second time I had them check for that noise. Had two techs go on a raid test with me. First dude said he doesn’t hear or feel anything the second dude was the shop foreman and said it was the abs actuator activating
